Aiya!
Will you do something special with your hair when you are going to watch "The Hobbit- an unexpected journey"?
I need some inspiration for my almost BSL hair, and which place am I going to get it if not here?

you know I've been so concerned with how to decorate my 3d glasses that I'd completely forgotten about my hair... I might just have to start practicing Elven hair again! Well actually I do have to start practicing Elven hair, especially since I'm planning to go see the final film in costume. I'm waiting for the 3rd film just in case Tauriel has a really cool outfit, otherwise I shall be Arwen

I'm very concerned about the animal abuse/neglect that went on during filming. I was so excited for the movie, and now will never see it. Don't want to give them my money, so sad :(

The posted an official response to that on the official facebook page today. The allegations were actually made by 2 animal handlers who were fired a year ago because THEY weren't treating animals properly. And given how much care they showed native plants and all animals during the filming of LOTR I highly doubt that this really happened. Indeed the following messages of support were actually issued in response to this:

FROM: DR JULIA BRYCE BVSc
“From December 2010 till July 2012, this practice was the primary Veterinary care giver for the horses and livestock in the care of “Three Foot Seven”.

During this period we were consulted promptly in cases of injury and illness. We were also consulted routinely about ongoing veterinary care and preventative medicine.

If referral was required to a specialist clinic or Massey Equine Clinic, this occurred promptly. As occurs in normal practice there are incidences and injury which may result in an unfavourable outcome and others that recover completely; like the young goat who fractured a front leg but recovered completely after 6 weeks in a cast and hospital rest, or the rooster who spent two weeks at our clinic with a foot infection.

These and other animals in the care of Three Foot Seven Limited received the best available treatment to ensure their recovery, their welfare and return to good health was paramount to those in charge. At no time were we concerned about the welfare and on-going treatment of animals under our care.”

FROM: JOY GRAY - FARMER
“I was appalled to hear of the wild claims being made in the media by PETA. I and my family own the farm which the Hobbits used to train their animals. Myself, my manager, my children and grand-children saw nothing to make us uncomfortable or give us cause for concern. We all had totally free access to all activities at all times. In fact, the animals were wonderfully looked after, being well-fed, well-housed, and well-treated. As both farmers and dedicated horse people ourselves we would have stood for nothing less. I myself ride horses, all my children rode competitively and now my grandchildren ride.

I was involved in Pony Club for many years and was District Commissioner for the Wellington Pony Club. My manager was totally aware of all that was happening with the Hobbits and he is outraged at these false claims.

The sixty horses, the cattle, oxen, sheep, goats, dogs, pigs, hens etc. were given professional and humane treatment.”

FROM: JED BROPHY - ACTOR (NORI)
“As an actor and animal trainer who has worked on large scale productions here in New Zealand, in particular The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and more recently, The Hobbit, I am flabbergasted to read this morning of the accusations levelled at the production by PETA. With a production as large as The Hobbit, filmed over such an extensive period the care of the animals used in filming was exceptional. The entire time we were on set, and when we were training with the animal wranglers employed to look after and train the animals for filming, I observed no mistreatment - in fact the opposite is true.

The animals were treated with the utmost care and responsibility. The farm in which they were housed had excellent facilities for the care and maintenance of the animals’ health. So much so that I moved my own horse on site so I could ride him for training exercises. At all times on set we had experienced Wranglers and Animal health Authorities on hand and Vets to monitor the welfare of the Animals working for the film. It has been my experience working for this film company that they take every conceivable precaution and employ the very best practitioners in every department and that includes the animal department.

I feel that there is a certain amount of personal vindictiveness levelled at the production from individuals with their own agenda. As is often the case in these situations, organisations will leap at the chance to gain publicity for their cause without seeking the truth. Being an experienced horseman and having worked as a wrangler and rider in the past, I would not have allowed myself to be a part of any production that knowingly employed unsafe practice in the workplace in this way. I can say with absolute certainty the production went out of their way to treat animals with the upmost respect and care.”

And given that PETA are the ones jumping up and down about this it's probably not true, PETA just want to cause trouble. Probably in an effort to get themselves some free publicity

It's reasuring that you guys seem do know what they have been saying isn't true about animals being treated badly... I dearly hope it is not!

Well I have been thinking of going as a hobbit, I don't have the long slender frame of my ideal elven woman... so hairy feet it is. :D
How I shall manage that I don't know, any ideas?

So headhairwise I was thinking of doing pincurls:

Oh hmm. This is the first I've heard about the animal dealio.. I'm not that tuned in to the media though. I do know that PETA just loves attention, and I seriously doubt the LOTR production would do anything to harm anything. They've always been very caring and respectful.

I'm definitely going to see the movie!

I will be wearing my hair down with braid waves and a fishtail braid behind each ear and my circlet :).

Must practice fishtail..

I am so excited for the hobbit! like really really excited! It comes out the day after my finals so I can't really guarantee I will be up for anything special, but ideally I would either do Galadriel like waves or a half up with a fish braid, to be a little elvish.

No special plans for hair, but do want to see the 3D version. DS19 is very excited about seeing it in 3D. He also has long hair, as do DW and DD15, we all do.

Maybe my Sting Letter opener will come in the mail in time for a hair dagger. I might paint the blade with blue and also glow in the dark nail polish, like a member on another forum did. I don't think it would glow so much as to be distracting, but I could always sit on the back row if that's the case.

I've been very active in greyhound rescue for nearly ten years, and Peta has proven themselves to be not only NOT an animal welfare organization, but quite the opposite. They are a group of extremists preying on people's emotions and using that advantage to raise money, and in the meantime, they stymie the efforts of others who are trying to actually help animals. Unfortunately, they also sucker a lot of innocent and gullible people out of their money in the meantime. I pay zero mind to anything they have to say about animal treatment, they've proven themselves to me to have little value when it comes to animal welfare.

I'm going as a hobbit, so will try and do something hobbity with my hair. For the LOTR marathon in the local cinema a few weeks ago I wore a costume (this, only with a new skirt: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff111/mia_aka_miasen/2012-10-31215543-1.jpg), and had my hair in a braid with little paper roses stuck in it. If I can get some bigger fake flowers I'll make a flower garland of sorts. Wavy classic length hair ain't exactly hobbity, and it won't curl, so I'll probably braid or loosely bun it.

We might be going to see the movie as a big group. Not necessarily right when it comes out but a couple of days after. So if my girl friends will dress up, I will, but otherwise I might just put on something slightly elvenlike and do my hair in a half up.

Suggestion for hobbit feet that can stand the cold:
Make or get skin colored woolly socks (or other thick-ish socks that you don't care about getting dirrrty from the bottom) in a big size that can fit around your shoes. Then stitch some woolly yarn or some kind of other hair-looking things on top of the sock to be pretend foot-hair. You can make a few stitches (or draw with a marker) in places where the betweens of toes are to make them appear more like feet.
If you want big feet, have big enough socks, some random stuffing (like old socks) and want to have toes in your feet, stuff the tips of the socks and put the socks on your shoes. Then stitch through the stuffed tip in the betweens of toes places. This will make the toes more 3D and your feet big like the hobbits have. :)

I am the person Wildcat Diva was referring to. I am wearing my painted-up Sting Letter-opener in my hair (and no, it doesn't glow enough to be distracting, and I WILL sit in the FRONT!). That, and my regular (sometimes vaguely costumey) wardrobe, will be enough.

I was thinking of doing an elfish hairstyle but with black hair, you can't really see any detail, especially with fishtail braids... I'm thinking of purchasing a circlet instead and wearing my hair down with braidwaves? I'll be following this thread for more ideas =)

Wow, wow, wow. First off, your bun itself is epic and beautiful. And with the addition of Sting? Out of this world! I wish I had one of these, but my hair is still so short! This is such a great look.

As for how I'll dress to see the film? My boyfriend is 6 feet tall, but used to have perfect longish hobbit hair. But now it's short so I don't know what he can go as. As for me? I don't know!!!! I wish my hair was long enough to be an elf. :sniffle:

I'm boycotting the film because forget about animal abuse, talk about CANON abuse! I'm one of those crazy people, yes. I feel horrible for complaining about this since I'm not fond of the lack of women in the Hobbit, but there are no female characters in The Hobbit. At all. Any of them. Honestly, I have so many Hobbit-related gripes... but I want to see your pretty hair.

Note: please do not forget about animal abuse. Animal abuse is bad. Though the fact that the allegations come from PETA does make me feel a little better, esp. since I'd never heard about allegations of animal abuse before this.

Feel better about the fact that that was Tolkien's doing, not the moviemakers. They sought to add females by tossing in Galadriel and another female elf general in Mirkwood. I think they named her Tuviel or something. I think Tolkien was more focused on the story and less worried about the lack of females. As for the animal abuse, I doubt it to be true. The peeps just got fired, so of course they'd be bitter.

On a side note, I'm an extremely huge, borderline obsessed, Tolkien fan, so all views expressed her may be biased. :)

As for my hair, I'm going as an elf, just as I did to all three LOTR midnight priemeres. Straight down my back with a circlet on top. Who has two thumbs and bought her Hobbit tickets the day they were available? THIS girl! ;)

You DO understand that The Hobbit was a book long before it was turned into a movie, right? The lack of female characters can hardly be blamed on Peter Jackson and the film crew! Sheesh. If they had added female characters who did not exist in the book, you would get other people to complain. I highly doubt that there are NO WOMEN AT ALL, I'm sure there are a few...in very minor roles. There are no major female characters in The Hobbit, that's how Tolkein wrote it. In fact, if you look up the cast of the movie, there are a few women. Just in minor parts. As a female, I have no issue with this. It's how the book was written! It would be ridiculous to add men to a movie(book) that was entirely female, just as it is silly to worry about he lack of casting of women in a movie(book) that is primarily male.

With that said, I will not be dressing up. I doubt my DH would ever stop laughing at me... Dressing up would be fun though! Maybe I'll do something fun with my hair.

Oh, I can't wait to go see The Hobbit! I already re-read the book (and read it out loud to my daughter, a chapter a night, so she would be familiar with the story before seeing the movie).

I hadn't thought about hair. My hair is only waist length now, but my daughter has lovely classic length hair. I will try to at least do something fancy for her hair, if not for both of us.

It would be cool to wear the dress I just got (I sent my measurements for a costume dress and it came in the mail yesterday). But, the dress is long and I don't want it touching sticky movie theater floors.

I know that there are no women in the movie because Tolkien wrote it that way. I've read Tolkien books many people haven't even heard of (though since this is 'calling all LotR lovers' I expect I'm in good company here). My objection is in two parts: that there are no women in the original book, and that token women are being added. And I know that there are women in the movie, because I checked (Galadriel and a female elf best described as 'NOT Legolas's love interest!!!! even a little bit!!!!!1!!!1'). And I'm not blaming Peter Jackson. I think he did a very nice job with the trilogy, all things considered.

I just don't think that "The Hobbit" is suitable for a movie in the style of LotR. It's earlier, and a lot less complex, and far less 'epic' in a way that looks nice on-screen.

Fynny, I wasn't even planning on doing anything, but I might do something elvish with my hair though. As much as you can do with APL+ hair. Any suggestions? :D I am pretty tall too, 170 cm. I don't think I will be dressing up too much though, it is too cold to think about dresses, and I think I would be about the only one. Lots of strange looks :p

Surely it's best to wait until you've actually seen the movie before you make judgement calls on "token women", especially since Tauriel won't actually be appearing until at least film 2 now. Besides I wouldn't classify Gladadriel as "token" either, she kicks butt in her own right and her being added to the film makes sense. PJ did acknowledge that the story is quite simple and chose to make the story more complex by adding in all those extra bits from The Unfinished Tales and the Appendices .etc to explain where Gandalf goes. I mean if you want to be picky Radagast never appears in The Hobbit either but I don't see you complaining about his addition.

I hadn't even thought about doing my hair for the film! Although I might try something elf-like. When the first LOTR film came out I remember my uncle said I looked like Galadriel, so perhaps something Galadriel inspired! :D I'm really looking forward to the film. I didn't realise it was coming out so soon until last week when I went to see Bond and the trailer came up. I am so excited! :)

Stellaaa -- that's hands-down the coolest hairtoy ever! And it looks awesome in your hair.

As my hair approaches classic, I've had trouble wearing it down for events that involve a lot of sitting (films, opera, etc.) -- it either gets sat on or falls into other people's way. Any suggestions from those planning to let their hair down for the movies?

I like The Hobbit. I can imagine how one might make a pretty good film adaption of it. I'm a bit uncertain that there's enough there to make THREE movies... But I'm hoping for the best. :) I'll definitely see the first one, at least.

I haven't thought about doing anything for my hair. Being Asian, I'm hobbit-sized, but I like Elven styles, but my hair is pitch-black so Elven styles would be hard to notice on my hair.

Maybe just two half-up crown braids with braid-waves for a medieval look.

This thread will want to see pictures of that style (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=89087)! :shamelessplug:

I've got a hobbit dress, and a body halfway between hobbit and elf, and elf-length hair.

Should I go as a crossbreed and watch people hate me? I'd be with DBF so he could probably protect me from anyone who gets too miffed about it...

(I'm a LOTR fanatic myself, so it matters what I go by. I just don't think I'd fit any of the races specifically, probably closer to Elf now. :hmm: )

I was thinking about a half-up crown braidy sort of thing. I won't be dressing up full on, because I will have already done that at next saturday's christmas party with DBF's family. It's medieval themed so DBF's mum is making me a gorgeous elven dress, which I am paying for in white chocolate xD But I'll probably wear my green peasant skirt and brown silk corset top over a long sleeved top or something, with the top half of my hair in a crown braid, the other curled with multiple mini sock buns!

I don't see why you can't be a hybrid, that sounds pretty cool to me. Wish I had a hobbit dress, I would wear it all the time! Or you could take the easy option and claim to be a woman from Lake Town. That way you can do whatever you want with your hair and wear the hobbit dress (I love that Chrome spellchecker doesn't try and tell me that hobbit isn't a word and tells me the proper spelling when I typo it!)

Great thread! I'm going to see The Hobbit on the 14th with fellow members of my area's Tolkien society, and I'm dressing up as a Wood Elf warrior, probably Tauriel-ish :). I like her hairstyle, but I'm deciphering it as yet:

http://corecanvas.s3.amazonaws.com/theonering-0188db0e/gallery/original/500da7ba2a161_tauriel.png

http://www.preternia.com/wp-content/gallery/bridge_direct/tauriel_review/014.JPG

It looks like three accent three-strand braids in a half-up plus another braid at the top of her hair...is it a lace braid? I'd better start practising! I'll probably leave my hair straight. I don't know if I understand the kind of knot that she has at the end of her hair (to keep it from tangling?), but maybe I will get some bandanna waves at the ends instead of that.

As for the festive dinner we're going to have the day after, I'm dressing as a Rivendell Elf with, probably, bandanna waves (just at the ends) and two herringbone accent braids, like Arwen's style when she wears the Rose Dress:

http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Elf/Arwen/Rose/BK01_Arwen_back_Fatimah.jpg

It's nearly the same as her Chase herringbone braids, only in the Flight to the Ford scene she wears three braids intead of two.

I look forward to seeing everyone's hair!!

I may be about to start unfounded rumors here, but I'm pretty sure they used hairfryers on the set at LOTR, to 1) warm up actor's feet (by all accounts the glue on those prosthetic feet was wet and icy-cold. MUST HAVE SUCKED TO WEAR THOSE FEET!) and 2) to dress actor's hair.

So blow-fryers are completely on-topic. Carry on.

I'm 4'11". I have curly hair. I'm done.

Great! :D

I did a practice run on a sort of Legolas-inspired style, but with English/Dutch braids, because my hair scoffs at the concept of a fishtail braid.

It was basically a half-up going directly into an English braid (no elastic at the top), then a Dutch, mostly-lace braid over each ear -- "mostly" because there wasn't much hair to pick up on the bottom/ear side, but if there was any I added that whisp to the bottom of the braid.

I would love to go as an elf, but unfortunately my hair is too short (and my face is too round), so elf is not an option. My hair isn't curly either and I'm 5'6" so there goes hobbit option too. Maybe I just dress as some Rohirrim peasant boy, if I have time to sew and knit something simple. For what I know, Rohan don't show up in Hobbit, but it's close enough :D

Sorry to get slightly off-topic again, but here's my opinion on the 'female character discussion'.

I am both a feminist-egalitarian and a very purist Tolkienite at the same time :). And I think that all the female characters that are going to appear in Peter Jackson's movies are 100% compatible with Tolkien's universe.
Tolkien did write stories that are rather male-centred and the societies he portrayed in his universe are pretty patriarchal in many cases. However, apart from his time's influence, and the patriarchy that has existed for ages, and the general fact that female characters were either ignored or secondary characters or less important characters in many books, Tolkien was also very influenced by mythologies that featured powerful women (with iniciative, warriors, sages, mages), and that shows in his writing. Tolkien has created quite a handful of powerful female characters. Quite a lot!

Although it is not the norm (portrayal of male-centered societies), Tolkien does show women who are brave warriors, wise loremistresses, powerful mages, and who show iniciative.

As for the female characters in the movie. The Hobbit is seen from the point of view of Bilbo. Bilbo doesn't know who Galadriel is, thus she doesn't appear in the book. He also ignores who Saruman is, or Radagast (he only hears his name mentioned), or Legolas, or Thranduil's name, and he doesn't know where Gandalf went until the end, and that without details. Thus, all that doesn't appear in the book. But Tolkien does describe all that in other works, and in reality, Galadriel was a powerful figure of the White Council, she did go to Dol Guldur with the rest of the Council and attacked the Necromancer. That is not Peter Jackson's invention. All he is doing is adding all the information from the Appendices and the like to Bilbo's story, to make the story more complete and explaining what happened to Gandalf.

As for Tauriel, a Wood Elf captain. The Mirkwood Elves are talked about in the book without making any distinction of name or sex. Legolas himself doesn't appear, although as Thranduil's son, the most probable thing is that he would be patrolling and captaining the Elves in Mirkwood. Another addition that is not P.J's invention! Bilbo did not know his name, and he did not know the name of any of the warriors, potential female captain included. Tolkien did not feel the need to describe them, and a patriarchy normally then inferes that they are all males.

But are they? Is a female Elf warrior non-compatible with Tolkien's Elven society? She is not!

Tolkien, in his Laws and Customs of the Eldar states that, while differentiated gender roles appear in Elven society (not so much as in human society, though), most of the warriors being males, for example - the females are as strong and as tall as the males, and if a female decides to follow a path that is not the "usual" one, she is allowed to do so. Elven society is flexible in that respect. If an Elven woman finds it in her vocation to become a warrior, a warrior she becomes.

I am convinced that there would be some female warriors/rangers in each Elvish settlement. Even if the majority would probably be males. Besides, Tolkien does show that a female Elf can take on warrior and athletic roles in the portrayal of some of his characters: Galadriel who competed with her male counterparts in athletic games in Valinor, who fought against the Feänorians when they slaughtered her mother's kin at Alqualondë ; Idril who took a sword in Gondolin to defend herself and her son, who fought with her bare hands "like a tigress" when her son was in peril; Lúthien who fought with Sauron and Morgoth single-handedly with her magic,...He also said, talking about Éowyn, that many women are capable of valiant deeds in battle when dangerous times approach.

With all this, I would say that a Wood Elf female warrior is perfectly capable of appearing in Tolkien's universe, and that is not anti canon at all. And I think that, Wood Elves being far fewer in numbers than before and besieged by many perils, more women would probably decide to join the rangers to take a hand in protecting the rest.

Ald also, today's society supposedly should encourage egalitarian values. Women should have more active, powerful role-models, and if it is done respecting canon, that's great. Anti-canon would be a female Frodo, or a female Aragorn. That would ruin Tolkien's universe. A female Wood Elf captain is not anti-canon, especially when she seems to be compatible with Tolkien's universe. All they're doing is giving a little more importance to some compatible female roles that were kept in the background.

Sorry for the long post ;), and now back to topic!

SwordWomanRiona, I really wish we had a 'like' button for your post! For the time he was writing I actually consider Tolkien to be very inclusive of both sexes and I always particularly liked the fact that 'no man' was able to kill the Lord of the Nazgul - for the really difficult jobs, they need a woman!

Even in his personal life Tolkien seems to have put women on a pedestal of virtual Goddesshood (particularly his mother who Galadriel was partially based on, and his wife who inspired Luthien/Arwen) and Goddesses can do whatever the hell they like, even become a warrior if they choose.

Back to topic - I honestly hadn't thought of wearing my hair in any particular way but now I've seen this I've got to do some kind of Elvish half-up. I've also got a long green velvet dress which I think is rather appropriate as well, so I'll probably end up wearing that.

The Hobbit is released the weekend of my 31st birthday - great birthday treat for me :D

Quick question for those planning to wear circlets to see the film, are you seeing it in 2D or 3D? I'm going for 3D and I fear that my replica of Arwen's circlet may not be very comfortable in combination with 3D glasses (which in the spirit of Smaug have been decorated with lots of little gems!)

Oh my, rebellious dwarf, I should get him to go for that. ;) I made a mock-up braid to see how much weight the clips I had around could take, but the only thing I had was bright blue yarn, and the only clip that worked had a pretty bow on it. He wasn't all too keen on the look for some reason. XD I will have to go shopping for something more natural looking tomorrow, he's such a boring dwarf.

XD The blue and the bow sound definitely interesting, if not very Dwarvish :D. He can still be the rebellious Dwarf with the braided beard dyed with woad, if he disguises the bow with some metal decorative ring :D!

I was thinking woad, too! It's times like these that I wish DBF had a beard; I am going to have to live without a rebellious dwarf of my own. :wail:

I'm watching it in 3D and I'm gonna be prepared: 1. wear contacts instead of glasses and 2. wear the circlet over my hair sorta like a headband

There are SO many lovely styles in this thread!!

On a slightly unrelated note: I would *LOVE* to know where to buy a lovely elvish circlet for under $50 I'd like to get one with my christmas money but I don't think I can justify paying an arm and a leg for something like that. (not for this movie, obviously :p but maybe in the future!)

Aw, too bad, nothing quite like a good ol' dwarf. ;) DBF always has a full beard, but usually trims it so it's neat, but he's been letting it grow wild for a few months, so it's getting quite bushy! :D

We'll go shopping later on, sp hopefully we'll find something more to his taste, he's too picky about his outfit to go with the rebellious dwarf idea. XD

I'd recommend checking out PreciousPlunder (http://www.etsy.com/shop/PreciousPlunder) on Etsy. They have a few designs in your price range and seem to be well-made. They do use nickel silver, though, so it might not be the best choice if you have any metal sensitivities. If you're willing to go just a little above your price point, this circlet (http://www.etsy.com/listing/81800099/travelers-circlet-silver-headpiece-tiara) is sterling silver and very well-made (I'll be having Elnara make my wedding circlet when the time comes). There's also this one (http://www.etsy.com/listing/95316805/silver-elven-medieval-two-in-one-circlet), which is definitely in your price range, but being aluminum I don't know how well it would hold up. Most of what's available is either poorly-made costume jewelry or ridiculously expensive. On the other hand, it's pretty easy to make them yourself if you have pliers and wire.

That's still a very pretty circlet. Really, you can wear your hair any way you want with it. If it were me, I'd still do a sort of elvish hairstyle with accent braids, maybe even twining an accent braid around it. (I've always loved the way this bride (http://medievalbridalfashions.com/images/gallery/linda/050Gertenbach__11.jpg) wove accent braids through her circlet.) Since it does link together in the back, you should probably keep it over most of your hair, but if you did a half-up or something, you could slip it under the top part in the back.

I wonder what gauge metal you'd use to make one? All I have are needle nose pliers though, none of those fancy jewlery ones. Though I guess for the price I could buy some and make infinite circlets...

I do have some copper wire at home, I bet I could twist up something like hypersensitive has. Maybe it'd even look presentable enough to wear to the film!

You're welcome! ^_^ I generally go with 16g wire. It's still small enough to bend fairly easily, but thick enough to hold its shape well. I typically use steel, but copper is a great choice. Aluminum is too soft, so by the time you reach a size that can hold its shape, it's a bit big for a circlet, or at least an elven one. If you have any joints you want to wrap, or if you want to add beads, 26g usually works well for me.

For the record, I'm planning to wear this (http://s831.beta.photobucket.com/user/CeruleanSiren/media/DSCN8920.jpg.html), which I made myself. Not sure if I'll do any special style or just braid waves.

DBF and I got our tickets for the midnight showing yesterday! I'm not going as anything in particular, just trying for a vaguely medieval/fantasy vibe more than anything. I think he's going to lend me some Belegarth/Dagorhir garb, which will probably mean a generic beige tunic. I may decide to wear that or I may go with normal clothes and fancy hair. I don't know about the hairstyle. Maybe a braided half-up, since the length is getting pretty fantasy-like.

I'm figuring out Tauriel's hairstyle, to wear for the movie. I think that the braid at the top of her hair is a lace braid. I've never done a lace braid (whoo, challenge ;)!), but I found this useful video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHu44KfLUtw&list=UUmyemrOguOEbKMH9IOdLqaw&index=10. But I've got no idea about what to do with the lace braid when I reach the other side of my head. Anyone any ideas, judging from the pics?
Apart from the lace braid, there's three 3-strand accent braids, but I really don't know how they tuck the lace braid in so that it won't get undone. I had been thinking about continuing to do a three strand braid when I reach the other side of my head and using that one as one of the three accent braids.

Help, fellow tolkienites :)?

It looks to me like lace braids on either side going from the temple back to the crown, meeting in the middle and combining into a single braid that drops down to meet the lower accent braids done with the hair above the ears. I can't see much detail for those, but on the doll they look like rope braid accents. In the first picture, it looks like the three braids are held together with some sort of metal clip or something. I wonder if a mini felxi-8 or very small hair slide would work? If not, I'd just tie it off (whatever works best for you; I'd use thin ouchless ponytail holders) and let it go.

Thank you, sparrowswing! Two lace braids meeting in the middle and 'creating' the middle braid at the back make much more sense! And then the two accent side braids meeting with that back braid...I'll try that, and see how it looks :)! I haven't got any flexi-8, but I do have small ponytail holders (I like the word 'ouchless' :D!) and a couple of decorated hair slides/barrettes/pins.

I won't be dressing up for the movie. My closest theater is in the next county over, and I only work part time so driving all the way there just for a movie isn't happening. Luckily I do work within a few minutes drive from there. :D I'll be seeing the 3D (at least once) by myself as my friend can't handle 3D movies. The idea is to go right after work (get off 3-4) and catch a matinee. I'm hoping to see it the Friday it comes out, but I have a Christmas Party at 6:30 and I get off work anywhere from 3-4pm. (I'm supposed to get off at 3, but some days that's not possible) 3D movies are expensive as it is, so it will HAVE to be matinee. Also since I work in a doctors' office - yeah what I wear will have to be office-appropriate. I also want to see it again in 2D to look for any bloopers I hear about. :-P That and 2d is cheaper and you can't see the Hobbit too many times.
I'll have to come up with something Hobbit-inspired.
I also hate having a wad of hair on the back of my head in the theater seats. I'm honestly thinking of doing something Bofur inspired. I've rocked twin braids at work before and I own a trapper hat. (We'll just ignore it doesn't curl up on the sides and has "Life is good" down the side of one flap.)

Actually I'm thinking about wearing Hobbit-inspired outfits to work every day this week. Glad I already have some lotr Jewelry (Hello One ring necklace.)

One a side note - years ago, back in the early - mid 90s when I was in elementary and middle school my Gran picked my clothes out for me. Among the things she picked out wear some wild-patterned vests that I didn't much care for. We're talking NEON cats, little American Flags, a possible circus theme one, purple and green frogs... tell you what, I was stylin' (pfft, not)
Frogs - not Hobbity.
Thanks to this movie, I find myself actually wishing I had a good vest. (I don't care that it's the guy characters who wear them.) Or maybe a long green skirt so I could better go like Tauriel. (Althought I don't think elves have bangs.)

I really wish I could do some elven hairstyles! My hair is tailbone length now, but so silky and fine (though thick) it wont stay in any hairstyle long - or even hold the slightest wave (have tried soft curls, plaits and heat curling - my hair is just straight). Also I am in Canada and my circlets are in England xD. I can do Arwens hairstyle from the scene when she saves frodo (see my pic - although thats almost 2 years old now!) , but my hair starts escaping the braids and it looks messy really quickly (even with oil). When forming the three braids I have to use small hair bands at the top just to keep the hair from moving (this is hard to explain) and then cut the bands out after - but this leaves it lose at the top..... Any suggestions?

I think I've decided on my hairstyle - I'm going to try a crown cascade - looks like this for those not familiar with it:
http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/images/braids/cascade/cascade16.jpg

It's not quite the same type of style as used for the elves in the movies but it does count as a half-up. I can do a crown braid so in theory a crown cascade should be possible for me but we'll have to see, I've never attempted it before! Might add some accent braids at the front to make it more LOTR-like ;)

I'm going tonight!!! I'm so excited! The problem is my hair is short now (between SL and APL) so I'm going to have to experiment to try something that works. I'm going dressed "normally" but my outfit is inspired by Tauriel (green and brown with leather touches) and my hair is pretty much the same colour thanks to henna. I didn't get the time to bedazzle my 3d glasses, which makes me a little sad.

I'm heading to the midnight premier in a few hours and I'm rocking a half up do where the sides are braided (not well but it'll do) then twisted up in a bun secured with Nightblooming's Lothlorien Hairsword. Hopefully I can post some picks this weekend.

Crown cascade done, just need to eat, do the rest of my outfit and makeup and head off. I have just over an hour so I should be alright. The hair was the only bit that could have potentially given me trouble but it actually turned out ok, maybe not perfect but very good for a first attempt. I will put up pictures later ;)

I liked it! It's been a long time since I've read the book so I'm not sure how closely the movie follows the story, but I thought it was still quite entertaining!

Tried to do Tauriel's hairstyle for the movie, got frustrated by my slippery hair and ended up just pulling 2 different sections back and twisting them to join in the middle. Still elvish looking but less stressful dealing with just washed fine and slippery hair.

Loved the movie! Seen it twice already! The second time I went with two girlfriends, they stayed over mine the night before and watched all the LOTR movies, and we gave each other "elf" hair! I just had 4 accent braids pulled back into a kind of half up and secured with an elvish looking leaf-shaped leather barrette I got from beadmask on etsy. :) I was very proud of my braiding skills, which are normally atrocious!

The Official Piffyanne Review of The Hobbit 1 (designed for those who haven't seen it yet.):

"It was epic. Think LOTR but with fight scenes that didn't leave me bored, more believable characters, (except Galadriel and Elrond as usual), I think I spotted Figwit (http://www.figwitlives.net/images/alonecc.jpg) which is always a good time (nothing better than an ascended extra to brighten your day), and a more matured sense of humor. They Tried for humor in LOTR 1 and only got some halfhearted laughter at the hobbit hijinks and in LOTR 2 and 3 there was basically none, but this one was VERY funny in all the right places. The Gollum scene was AMAZING and Peter Jackson is fleshing out the story at all the appropriate places without cutting any good parts from the book.

My one spoiler is thusly: Peter Jackson is being very faithful indeed in that he includes all the songs sung in The Hobbit (and they are set to appropriate and catchy music) and brush up on your riddles. I havent read the book in a few years but I was getting Deja Vu right and left and can tell you flat out A HugE portion of the movie is word-for-word the book's dialogue.

My one complaint runs thusly: I DO think Radagast the Brown got FAR too large a part throughout the movie, and that Peter Jackson rather Jumped the Shark during the Warg chase scene with him (tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JumpingTheShark).:shrug::shrug:

Spoilers over, he has surpassed himself, he storytelling was good, the dwarves were BETTER, his Big Reveals have been improved and matured so they work much better (ESPECIALLY how he handles Smaug. That was EXCELLENT), and Andy Serkis STOLE THE SHOW :thudpile: :thudpile: :thudpile: :rollin: :thud:."

For those of you who don't know who Figwit is, during the Council of Elrond in LOTR 1 Frodo just got finished saying "I will take it" and the audience is thinking "Frodo Is Great" and then the camera cuts to a shot of elf extra Bret McKenzie and the audience pauses mid-thought and wonders "Who Is That?" And that acronym became FIGWIT, to reference Bret's character. He never speaks, but he's beloved. And I think I saw him before/after Elrond shows up (http://www.figwitlives.net/images/alonecc.jpg). :)

So unfortunately after managing to upload my hair pics to photobucket, they all came out horrible. Here's the only pic that wasn't blurry but it's only a partial shot. The style was far from perfect but it was a long, busy day and I hadn't previously had tie to experiment with my new toy since it arrived the day of the premier.

And sorry for the size....I'm still learning how to do this right.

Mini review: I loved it, but one minor criticism is that it felt like the story was being dragged out somewhat. Sections that could have been dealt with in a couple of minutes instead took ages - it almost felt like New Line thought 'everyone is expecting a really long movie, so we have to give it to them'. But that aside I don't have anything else negative to say. And I totally agree with piffyanne, the riddles in the dark scene was definitely the best bit, even though not all the riddles were included. Also I seem to have developed a bit of a crush on Thorin :crush:

Anyhow, here's my pictures...

I just got home from watching The Hobbit.. it was awesome! It was quite short notice though so I didn't have time to do an updo.. I ended up with just my regular waves. Tried using a little product to enhance them a bit but it didn't really make a difference. :D I would have liked to do a french fishtail braid for an elvish hint but I haven't practiced that yet.. Oh well I have plenty of time for the next movie! :)

It's very good. It's pretty faithful to the book and the inserts from Unfinished Tales etc. have been done very well. Radagast is adorable, but be warned the spiders of Mirkwood make a brief appearance (just incase you aren't keen on them like me).
Oh and don't bother staying until the end of the credits, there is no preview of number 2 :(

Ori was a problem for me too. There were other extremes left, since they were that desperate to make everyone unique, but all I could think of was "Dopey" from Snow White. Not what I want from an Epic like Tolkien's, I don't think he's what Tolkien was shooting for, and having a Dopey Ori was a cop-out IMO.

I want to see it again! Anyway, I too loved Thorin's hair. I didn't have time to dress up before going to the movie, but I had my hair ready from the morning! I wore a bun held with the Flexi-8 I linked to below in the top half of my hair. I split the bottom half in two, made two braids, and crossed them loosely in the back, securing the ends to the outsides of the bun. I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense! I am too busy with holiday activities to take the time to post photos now, but I'll get around to it eventually. (I'm making a snakes & ladders board game for my daughter, and it's taking hours painting all the details).

Yeah you guys can keep Legolas and Kili. They're too boyish for me so after Aragorn only Thorin does it for me.

I mean Kili is handsome but he is so "young" and I am more into that dark ruggedy thing than soft blondes, even though I must admit Faramir was the next best thing in LotR after Aragorn for me. :D

Even though some complain about not all dwarves being "ugly" and dwarvish enough, I think Thorin definitely is dwarvish but also eye candy! It's a win-win situation!

Hey! Get in line! :bigtongue: Of course they're all up for grabs if I can have Elrond. :toofers:

*sigh* I think I'm going to have to go see it again tonight. It was very enjoyable, but 48 fps (http://movieline.com/2012/12/04/hobbit-48-fps-frame-rate-fiasco-review-peter-jackson/) meant that the prosthetics were less than convincing; Hobbit feet never looked so plastic. :( Makeup tech will definitely need to improve to match the new format. I also took issue with The Shire somehow seeming far less charming (something about the way it was shot in addition to the frame rate). That aside, good movie - though not as sophisticated as LOTR, which was obviously intended - and well worth seeing.

It's so nice to have the LOTR buzz back - only wish I hadn't chopped my hair last year so I could join the festivities properly, hairstyles and all. Luckily it's a trilogy, and hopefully Silmarillion after that.

I'm very confused now that I'm actuallly not even sure if I like Aragorn or Thorin best. I know it may be the being new with Thorin but I always thought nobody else but Aragorn could have my heart. I loved the film!!! I've watched it five times already (yes, I am a hardcore fan :D). And more times to come! I really really like it, and the scenery, the music, and the acting are amazing - Bilbo, Thorin, Gandalf and Elrond's acting is spot on, incredible, and the rest of the cast is really good, too. They did make up a couple of things, but otherwise they have respected the book, and most of the things they've invented blend in more or less well with the rest (and I'm a purist! The only thing I thoroughly dislike is Galadriel claiming that the Witch-king of Angmar had been buried. Hello?? He was already a Nazgûl when he came to Angmar by Sauron's orders! Galadriel and Elrond should know their history in the film!!). And I really like the fact that they're including material from other writings to tell us what is going on apart from the Dwarves' quest.

And now everybody's talking about lines, I think I should join in :P...I've always been more of an "Elf person", but gods, I seriously love Thorin!! I think Richard Armitage looks amazing as Thorin, I love the hair and the outfit with the deep blue and the scale-armour and the furs (not to mention Orcrist, which has become one of my favourite swords)...and seriously, those eyes! That gaze! What's not to love?? :inlove: He does a brilliant job, too, looking stately, imposing, severe and grim as Thorin should be, and also giving so much depth to the character with that sadnessa nd bitterness in his eyes.
I personally have never really liked Aragorn because I think the actor lacks that stately manner and dignity, I don't know...

I still like Legolas, Elrond, Figwit and all the other Elves, and Fíli and Kíli are rather cute and comely too, there's no denying...but for now I'm Thorin all the way :D!

And pics! I went to the opening as an Elven ranger with some friends from the Spanish Tolkien Society. I tried to imitate Tauriel's hairstyle (2 lace braids at the top joining at the back into a 3 strand accent braid and two 3 strand accent braids at the sides), but my hair was behaving horribly that day, and I didn't get what I initially wanted because the braids refused to stay nice and defined...Anyway, you can't really see the style in the pic, so no problem ;) (left is before I did my hair, right is after the film at the hotel):

And at the 'festive dinner' we had the day after, I went as a Rivendell Elf, with blue-beribboned accent braids, seashell-bunwaves at the ends and my silver-and-amber circlet (sorry the front pic is fuzzy):

Oh my gosh you all look beautiful I love your costumes especially both of your Rivendell elves costumes! The long hair really ties in the authenticity :thud:

For my birthday I took the day off and went to see the Hobbit!!! I'm shocked they are making it into 3 parts?
Next year I will celebrate with my hair somehow I'm thinking Legolas braids! Perfect for my hair and I can't pull off hobbit or dwarf so I'll need to learn fishtail.

Finally got to see it! *cheers* Those younger dwarves sure are good looking! I wasn't going with a dress up crowd so a simple fishtail braid accented with a leaf shaped barrette was my nod to elf friends.

SwordWomanRiona, you have some amazing hair! I love your Rivendell dress, too.

I wish I had done something special with my hair when I went to see The Hobbit, but both times I saw it I just wore my hair down. Now I HAVE to go see it at least one more time, so I can concoct some beautiful Elvish hairstyle.

I went and saw it and I had planned to do something lovely with my hair (aka something elvish) but I ended up doing a up-do because I didn't want my hair to be in the way while watching the movie. :) I might go watch it again with my brother and I will wear it loose and curled with maybe some smaller braids. Looking through this thread has given me lost of inspiration!

I LOVED the movie, I've seen it twice already lol but is anyone elses slightly disappointed that some of the drawves (Fili/Kili/Thorin) look more like men that drawves?

Haha well honestly 'disappointed' is the last thing that comes to my mind! :P THEY ARE FINNEEEE! (We really do need that :swoon: emoticon!) I love how Kili is like the Legolas of the Hobbit (and Thorin the Aragorn haha!), we just need some eyecandy ;)

Saw it this weekend and LOVED it :D It started a little slow but the second half was over in a second, I totally forgot the time! I used to be a big LOTR-geek but for the last years I didn't really care about it anymore. Well, I can now officially say my obsession is back :rolling: This weekend all I have done is watching all the behind the scenes videos and spent hours at Tumblr. And sometimes drooled over Kili. And Fili. And sometimes Thorin. :o I feel like a 14-year old again haha!

^I also had this huge obsession for many years( I even have Mallorn leaves tattoo:ed), and it cooled down a bit. Now when the Hobbit came out it's like all is coming back again! Must read the Lotr-trilogy again *sigh*...:)

Actually the elves and Eowyn are the main reasons for me growing out my hair again...can't wait! Now I have loads of hairspo, thanks to you guys!

Ah yes, I'm planning on having a LOTR-marathon very soon. I haven't seen the movies for years! When The Hobbit was over all I could think was 'OH NO, I need to go home and watch all the other movies.. I do not want to leave this world aah!' haha.

Off topic: The swoon emote keeps reminding me of a horrid melodrama/comedy from junior high. The villain was revealed to be the hero and secret love of my character and my line was, "Ravenel Van Boondoggle! I swoon." I was half convinced he'd let me fall when we did the school performance.

I'd acquired a copy of The Hobbit to read to the kid a few months ago (completely oblivious to the movie coming out) and after seeing it was inspired to start reading. His cousin who is only one year older got to go see it in the theater and my kid keeps complaining that he didn't get to go too but he seems to be enjoying the book one chapter at a time.

I was also in a hair toy carving sprint with my new tools *squee* and found I just had to have something elven so I made my first big fork.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1174&d=1357085738

One of the tines broke due to a crack in the wood and after using it for a day I determined I need to shorten the others to make it work better.

People are hilarious! I was just googling around to see if I could have a closer look at Thranduil's costume(I love movie costumes) and I find myself surrounded by all sorts of funny gifs and images of "The Elven Party King" and his Elk( with a supposedly embarrassed Legolas in the background) and couldn't stop laughing. If people could come up with all this with only a couple of seconds of screen time, imagine what they will do when "The desolation of Smaug" is up and running.
Wonder if anyone could see this coming,I for one did not:).

But to be fair and bring this thread back around, I'm dying to try Fili's hair out. Seems simple enough, what with the Legolas-esque style lace braids along with some basic braids. I just need to order some appropriate hair decorations. :)

Me too! Love seeing another lover of the hounds! My family has been active since the 80's-best animals ever. And ITA about PETA.
