View Full Version : To cut or to dye?

My sister received a gift certificate for her and a friend to go for a make-over for her 18th birthday, and she really wants me to go with her. I am keen for us to share the experience and just have a really fun day together, but the programme includes either a cut or a dye. I am reluctant to lose my length, but feel the style looks funny in its current state. I am also reluctant to damage my hair, but have been wanting to take it a shade or two darker for a month or so now. I was hoping for some thoughts on the pros and cons of each?
(I am committed to doing one or the other, and am ok with this. My hair or my sister's birthday? No contest)

You could get a tiny trim. Or maybe a semi-permanent color?

Well dying it isn't that big of a deal, if you do it once or twice, hair only really gets destroyed after bleaching/coloring with ammonia the length multiple times. However, how much would you be willing to commit to your new color? would you mind growing it out two toned or to keep dying the roots?
Cutting isn't that bad, unless your length means THAT much to you, but if I were you and had to pick, I'd pick the cut, just because I've been wanting to even out my layers for the longest time (except I'm so proud of the length I utterly refuse, if anything I'm evening it out a year or so from now).

I'd go with the cut, only because I am currently dealing with the two tone thing. it doesn't look bad but I don't care for it. And having the dye darker than your natural color gives a weird effect for about a month after the roots start to show.

Maybe you could just get a nice conditioning session and a trim. Getting your hair cut does not have to mean losing lots of length. Make it very clear to the stylist just exactly how much you want cut off. If you want blunt ends (as most of us like) don't let him/her push you into layers or into anything you don't really want. If you take control of what is being done, this could be a really fun day! :)

How bout a gloss treatment or natural looking highlights?

No way would I do a dye job, just because it is free. There is no such thing as a free dye job. A month from now, you will need to do it again then month later again and on and on. The only way I would say yes to a dye jot would be if I really hated my hair colour and wanted to commit to regular dye jobs and the expense that comes with it. Of course there is also the damage to hair to be considered. (Yes I do henna now and yes I did dye my hair, at the age of 45 to get rid of grey and black hair that took over my natural hair colour. It was a choice and a commitment I was ready to make.)
No matter what, a minimal cut, will grow back and in a couple of months, your hair will not have any permanent damage from the cut.
The cut sounds like a good idea if you are not totally happy with your present cut/style. Be careful, I fell that until about shoulder length most styles look better in layers or something similar, but then comes the grow out period.
Have fun and look through the books, talk to the person cutting your hair. Do not let yourself get talked into anything you are not comfortable with.
I am very specific with how much I want cut off. Even then sometimes, It ended up shorter or not what I wanted. I had a razor cut done once, not again.

Dying doesn't do as much damage when you go darker as opposed to light, especially if it's only a semi-permanent color, but MeMyselfandI is right, it is a deadly cycle.
Go for a trim. XD

Thanks, everyone. I'll probably go with the trim and even out some of my layers.
