View Full Version : French twist for iii hair?

I can't do a french twist to save my life. I don't know if my hair is too long (an inch from BSL, possibly less) or just too thick?

I've tried just about every instruction I can find to no avail, and I have no idea what to do.

Help?

My hair is too short for a logroll, too, by about six inches...

Someone had a log roll variation for shorter hair back in the old LHC. If somebody remembers the directions ,please post. It starts with seperating hair into two from the crown and than?? Twisting each section seperately?I really don't know but it looked cool.
And for making you feel better I can't wear a French Twist either:)

I have iii hair at waist and I can do a french twist. You just have to fold the length a few times and not make the roll too tight:)

This is what I do, although I have less length.

Here are my instructions for the french twist (http://classiclength.home.mchsi.com/french_twist_instructions/index.html). I had ii hair at the time those photos were taken, and borderline ii/iii hair now (though my taper is ridiculous).
Eventually I plan to do a video of it but for now the still pics will have to do. Let me know if you have any questions!
Also, here is a pic of the results, using the same method described above, where it looks more french twist-like.

Aw I have forgotten your awesome instructions Cinnamon Hair!
And where did you get the idea that your taper is ridiculous? It looks perfectly normal to me and who wouldn't have taper at knee length!

Aww thanks Zift! Well saying I have ii/iii hair feels like a fraud when the length is so much thinner than that... iii hair makes me think of someone like Dianlya or DBF for example, and that is far from my hair thickness even in its wildest dreams. lol

Hey it writes iii in my profile but my hair has those wildest dreams to have Dianyla or DBF like hair too;)And besides the thickness is measured from the scalp right? Your hair well deserves a ii/iii IMO:D

ETA: Tehee we kind of hijacked the thread:o

This is the exact reason I stick with ii/iii. I have taper and to call myself iii seems very strange.

I know what you mean about it not working, I think you really just have to practice it.. I have a very difficult time getting it right and really feel I have only done it once or twice where it looked decent enough to go out in.. but its possible!

Me too! I also fold mine up as much as I need to. Then I like to leave some curls at the top hanging over and put a short claw clip for thick hair there to hold it. I LOVE this style and it shows off my curls and also looks nice. I never know how to get the top looking good anyway so this works well for me!:D

There's a pic in my profile even though my hair was shorter then I just twist it more now and fold.

Have you tried doing it while your hair is still damp? The FT was my daily style at your length up until waist /hip (slightly modified). I used to use bobby pins, not a claw or a comb.

If it's an consolation, I've only been able to do a French Twist successfully once. I can get the back. But the top of my head is always puffy and weird.

Yes, that used to be a problem for me too. Practice and damp hair is what solves it. You could also just pin down the top poof.

Well, I managed to get one while walking to the train without looking and the top isn't puffy, but I have no idea how good the back looks.

I do have a tiny chunk of ends poking out the top though.

I am so anxious to get to work to check it out.

I never succeed. I might be able to roll it al in but fixing it firmly to my head is the problem...too heavy..for my hairtoys;)

Your hair is too long! You can do a modified FT and hold it with a ficcare or a slide.

I'm not anywhere close to a iii (hoping one day to make a 3" ponytail), but I'll chime in to say that you're not the only ones having trouble with french twists. With practice, I'm finally getting them to look better, which means more like a FT than a strange growth, but they fall out quickly and easily. I've tried securing them with FT combs, pins, sticks, and a ficcare or two, but the things just don't want to stay. I may have to give up and go to log rolls.

A French Roll is a great alternative to the French twist for thick hair. Here is a picture of it in my picture album: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=206&pictureid=2825. My hair is about BSL in that picture.

I used instructions from the book, The Five-Minute Hair Stylist by Christine Moodie, but I modified them just a bit.

Bring your hair back like you would to begin a bun. While holding the length in your left hand like a ponytail with your ring finger, pinkie and thumb, wrap the length clockwise around the first two fingers of your left hand (which are pointing behind you) so the length would look like an upside-down U. Tuck the fingers holding the U under toward the right to twist the length and form the U into a loop. Pull the loop up to a comfortable part on your crown and secure with pins. Now, tuck the ends into the fold you made (I fold mine up first) and secure with pins/Ficcare, whatever.

My hair is soaking wet from washing right now, but I could take some pictures later today or tomorrow. The instructions sound a lot more complicated than it is, but I find detailed instructions easier to follow than vague ones.

I cannot do french twists, log rolls or anything like it to save my life! It just end up looking like something is growing out of the back of my head and I am trying to cover it up, doing a bad job at it too..... ;)

My hair is as thick as yours and I had a french twist in today. Here is what I do. Gather hair into low pony tail (nape of the neck) hold tail close to head and start twisting hair. I only twist to about the top of my head, holding slightly away from my head. Take the remaining untwisted hair and fold down and under (the twisted hair) in sort of a loop. If you have a tail hanging out (I usually do) tuck under the roll of hair kind of twisting and smoothing the hair over at the same time. Keep practicing - I have seen several different methods for french twists depending on length and thickness - something will work for you.

Great instruction pictures, icydove! That should be in an article. I actually understand what you are doing, which I never figured out from the book.

Thanks!

I do one by twisting and lifting the hair, then folding it around on the top like a U, and leaving the ends loose to peak out. I wonder if I have pictures of this? I will see...

(Okay, a small one here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=409&pictureid=4701). The only way to keep them from bulging out on my head is to leave a loop or U out at the top. If that makes sense. icydove makes far more sense than I do!)

but thats of topic..I will try to look for intructions for that modifiet FT..and look in my toys what would fit (flexis work perfect for lots of do's for me)

I have the same problem I have managed to get my hair to french twist once. It feels like my hair is too thick.
