When you all talk about wearing your hair up, do you pull it up in a ponytail and then bobby pin it to make a bun or will this way cause breakage? Sorry if this question has already been answered, I am new here. Thanks.

Some do that probably but most don't put it up in ponytail but just start the bun by twisting or wrapping the hair on itself. This depends on hair length and type too.

People here are generally more likely to use hair sticks, hair forks or U shaped/Amish pins instead of bobby pins to hold the hair up in a bun. At longer lengths the bobby pin method doesn't work much of the time.

There are instructions for various styles linked here:

It's in the Very Important threads sticky in in the Mane forum.

Hi, welcome to the boards :)

I use to do that kind of bun most days but I did find that I got a lot of breakage eventually which I don't think was caused by the bobby pins but by the ponytail holders. Even non-metal ponytail holders seem to cause breakage for me, but I'm sure there are some people who wouldn't get noticeable damage from it.

If you have a look at the articles section (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=category&categoryid=1), there are quite a lot of different ways to put your hair up. Some of them need really long hair to do but there are quite a few that can be done on short hair.

I find switching between a few different types of updos is best for stopping damage for my hair.

Thank you both very much. Right now I already have my hair up in a ponytail bun ( getting ready to go to church) but from now on I will check out the links you two gave me to see what will work for my hair length. Have a great evening.
