I use a soft wash cloth and rub my comb down. I fold the wash cloth in thirds so that it fits snugly between the teeth and work it back and forth in a sawing motion. Every once in awhile I use a little of the wax that came with my comb. However, since I oil my hair, I feel that the comb probably gets enough conditioning even without the wax.

I kept checking back here cause I was hoping someone would post something! Thanks, spidermom.

The truth is -- I never clean my wooden comb. I figure it gets oil from my hair (I oil after pooing and a heavier one pre-pooing), and it never seems dirty or gunky, so....

Do you feel like yours is actually dirty, serious?

I find my well oiled comb gets fuzz in it, so I "floss" it in a similar manner to Spidermom.
I also oil my hair with regularity, so I wax only once or twice a year...if I remember.
I do find my smaller version that I carry with me needs a tad more attention, since it is not going through fully oiled hair (just those few drops at the ends).
The wax is mostly for the handle, and so I buff the whole comb occasionally.

Ah, thinking ahead! ;)

Well, you may find (as I have) that it's not too much of an issue, especially if you oil your hair. :)

Thank you,Spidermom,Ill use the wash cloth when needed.I didn t get any wax with the comb, but as you said, the oil from the hair should be enough.

I clean mine with cheap or old toothbrushes. mine do get gunk on them even though I oil my hair. I oil the combs once in a while too. The oil helps break up any of the waxy gunk on the tines.

My comb gets a whitish substance between the teeth; that is what I clean off.

Mine gets gunk, lots of it! I find that it gunks up when I live in places with hard water. I get a lot more scalp build up in general with hard water. M

My comb has fairly closely spaced teeth, so I use my fingernails to get some off, but for better cleaning I use a handkerchief and bobby pin. Then I toss the handkerchief in the laundry basket and it washes out just fine. Toothpicks work well too when I have them.

I used a clean makeup brush (because of the thin, soft bristles) to really get in between the tines & remove any dirt/buildup. Then I use a cottonball & apply some oil rubbing clean any remain dirt with little to no residue of cotton (if you think cotton leaves too much of a residue, then a clean cloth will do just fine).

Hope this helps. ;)

I have a Japanese boxwood comb and I find the best way to deep clean it is to use an old toothbrush with a bit of olive or camellia oil to get between the teeth.

I also sometimes fold over a piece of tissue a few times and run it between the teeth, although I find this method more time-consuming and it doesn't really get the comb as clean as the toothbrush and oil method.

When I started using my wooden comb, I did some research into this subject, and it seems in Japan they have a tool that is effectively like a loom with many pieces of parallel thread, and the comb is passed up and down the thread, removing anything that is caught between the teeth.

There is a link here featuring this tool, although i'm afraid some of the translation from Japanese is rather dubious...
