Hi, I'm new here and I was just wondering if someone could help me out with updos. For the past few years I have worn my hair in a ponytail holder, without pulling it completely through the last time, leaving it in a sort of "bun" look with spikies on top. Well I'm bored with that! I need help! I don't know how to do anything else though. I can't french braid because my arms get too tired and I just generally suck at it. I really don't even know how to make a bun! I have hardly any hairtoys either. My hair is at the bottom of my shoulderblades. Any ideas? TIA

Well, you're in the right place -- welcome! :flower:

The articles section (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=category&categoryid=1) and the updo instructions thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=8235) are great places to start. Don't have a hairstick? Grab a pencil, a knitting needle, or a chopstick and practice! :D

This thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=8235) has a lot of neat updos.... and I started an updo (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=10177) howto thread... You can request help with different updos and LHCers can help you out :) Hope that helps!

P.S. Welcome to LHC :):cheese:

ETA: LeaM07 beat me to it lol

That half-loop thing was one of my staple styles for years, and, well, frankly it still is. Before LHC I couldn't even braid my own hair, but now I can french braid! There are tons of great tutorials and stuff here. You can do it! :cheer:

I'm just starting to work on updos too... I am practicing braiding each night, I suppose I am getting a bit better.

Something I like to do is gather all my hair as if to do a ponytail, and then twist it, pulling it up onto my head and then securing it onto my head with a large barrette. I don't have many hair toys either so it functions as a quick kinda bun thing. Keeps it up, and you can wear barrettes to match your mood or outfit or w/e

That's true. I really love the look of long hair being down, all graceful and beautiful...but I moved from The Freakin' Desert, Texas to It's So Humid Why Isn't It Raining, Maryland so my hair is all frizz all the time. Not very cute.

LeaM07 has been far too modest, and not linked to her own updo site, which I find one of the most helpful ones I've ever seen:

Haha, thanks, dorothea-brooke. I just verified here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=1657) that you need 25+ posts to see the blog section, so she won't be able to get to mine yet. There are tons of style options in those sections to keep you busy, though! And fair warning... lots of pretty things out there to hold them up -- hide your credit card if you're easily tempted! ;)

Ah hairtoys. The things that start the slippery slope into styling fun are always a welcome thing! Ever since I bought some hairsticks they've become a staple of styling use for me. Before that it was mostly just a regular 3-strand braid, but then buns came into the picture and I hopped over that first learning curve. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun trying it out (especially when success starts coming easier and easier to you)!

Ah, yes, forgot about that.... Hopefully you'll be up to 25 posts soon, micah_mae!

I posted a naughty enabling shopping list over on this thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=10368) (about halfway down the first page). Have fun! :eyebrows:

Your hair is about the length mine was when I first tried a KarenLynn Knot... and failed miserably. Instead, in the process of my bumbling attempts, I made a different bun, and called it the wrap-knot bun (although it's probably been discovered and named before). It's quite a versatile bun (see my photos for examples, if you like), and there's a link to an old video on my blog intro, in case it helps.

Good luck!
