View Full Version : My first white hair

I posted a while back that I might or might not have found my first white hair. During the LHC Outage I examined closely and no longer had any doubt. I tried hard to capture it on camera:

...But it is very hard to tell apart from any other hair the light catches, on film. I promise it's there!

As opposed to women who are horrified and pluck out a white hair - I have tremendous white hair anxiety. I'm always afraid it will shed or be pulled out! I always check to make sure it's still there after some hearty BBBing.

Not very exciting, I guess, but if anyone can understand my excitement about this, it's LHC. :cheese:

I hope my greying process is a little quicker than that! I'm sure this will be my only one for a while, though. Most people I talk to say they didn't find a second grey for years after the first.

I feel the same anxiety about mine too! I don't have very many silvers, but I always check my comb after I detangle to see if any came out. I lost one last week and felt sad

Congratulations on this right of passage. :) I have a few white hairs hanging out too, and I quite like them being there.

I found my first white hair last month and was real excited. I told my mum and she was appalled. silly. My partner who has jet black hair has maybe 20 white hairs and at first i thought there was glitter in her hair, so pretty.

I agree with the silver white hair lovers. They add glisten and shine to the hair. I just turned 40 and my friend, who has many silver hairs and bleaches, asked me if I have any grays, yet. I told her I wasn't sure, I wouldn't be able to tell in my hair! (because it is naturally very blonde). I'm not worried about silvers at all, I just think they will add more beauty and shine.
My partner is a long curly haired male with completely silver hair - I love it!

Congratulations!!!!! And, yep, you can tell the difference!

I found mine while we were down. Then I looked some more... And was very sad to not find more of them! No more henna, no more henna, no more henna...

I don't know, I've seen the effects of salt and pepper hair with henna over it, and it was very striking. I had an Indian woman as a guest when I was in cosmetology school and spent the whole appointment wondering what had created her hair color. It was mainly black, but with tons of orange hairs (not gross neon, pumpkin orange, but orange) throughout. I knew they couldn't be highlights because no one could weave a foil that thin, and at the roots, they were grey... then I finally realized, OH, she must use henna! Kind of dumb it took me so long to figure out.

I would have just asked her, but she didn't speak English very well.... and was a very unpleasant person. :p But I'll always remember her cool hair. The effect of henna over the greys made me think of woodgrain for some reason.

Ooh, beautiful! I think I'm going to be like my dad and not have many at all, rather than my mom with salt and pepper. Too bad for me! Maybe you'll get a white streak up front. That would be awesome.

The white in your hair looks good with your hair color. I've found my first gray not too long ago and it took time for me to get used to it. And like others here, I totally understand your excitement over this. When you start seeing more white hairs, do you plan on coloring your hair or are you going to let them grow in naturally?

I like the greys anyway, and my hair really shouldn't deal with that kind of abuse since it's so fine, so whatever natures says, goes. :)

Ooh, congrats! I didn't notice my first white hair until a few months ago, and it was already about 14" long. It's right at my hairline, almost exactly where your is, but I managed to not notice it in my dark hair for over two years. Weird. Once I started looking, I found two others that were shorter right next to it, but that's all I've seen. There may be some sprouting on the back of my head, but I won't know for ages.

I love them, though. They sparkle so prettily in the light, and the contrast against my hair is awesome. I was planning to henna, but after finding my sparklies, I just don't think I have the heart to cover them up.

Some people never get any on the backs of their heads. Won't stop me from getting my fiance to pick through my hair and check the first chance I get, though. :)

I fully believe that God made me a certain way and I don't want to mess around with it.

I just found my first gray a few months ago, and my second sometime last week. I'm so excited it's ridiculous. :D I can't wait for my hair to go primarily gray or silver... it's almost black naturally and I can't use deposit-only dyes without bleaching first. (Won't do that again! Seven hours in the chair, and it wasn't half as long as it is now!)

Yep, I can totally understand. I have exactly 4 gray hairs at the moment. My fear is always that someone is going to see one and just pluck it like they're doing me a favor, but they are all hidden enough in there that I doubt it would ever happen. I actually rarely even see them at all, but it's kind of fun knowing they're in there.

I found my first gray hair a few weeks ago. It was very long! My sister noticed it and encouraged me to pluck it...simply to remember my first lol. I'll confess it worried me because I feel like it's too early. At the same time, I'm okay with it since it's a family inheritance lol.

Ludwig, I wouldn't pluck that gray hair. While it may be nice to save your first gray hair, you can actually damage the follicle by plucking that little hair, sometimes permanently (heard this on an episode of Dr. Oz show) so I don't think your sister is right to be encouraging you to pluck. If you've only just now got your first gray, it will be a while before they become noticeable. My equally encouraging advice would be to let that single gray hair stay where it is. I wouldn't worry about those grays just yet.

I would agree. I don't know about scalp hair, but repeated forcible removal of hair from eyebrows, legs, groin area, etc definitely has a lasting effect. My eyebrows used to be twice as thick as they are now, and I've waxed/plucked so much that most of it doesn't even try to grow back! It's a blessing when it comes to body hair, but not something I care to test on head hair...

There's always the old mascara trick if it drives you nuts. ;)

Miss Catrina, does your previous overplucking of eyebrows affects your current head hair growth?

No, but it just goes to show what damaging follicles can do.
