View Full Version : massive shedding and considering trimming

For the past two weeks I have been shedding massive amounts of hair. I have some health issues that can cause hair loss, and about three months ago I was having similar problems, but was able to get it under control in under a week. Right now I have noticeably thin parts around my temples, and my Mom commented on my hairloss (because it's clogging all the drains) before I even told her about how I was having problems.

For a while I've been thinking about experimenting with bangs, as I don't quite like how I look with all my hair pulled back.

At this point I'm thinking of getting my hair cut back to just under shoulder length, and getting bangs cut in to see if I like them. That way my hair will be more ready to receive the new growth and thicken up, and to get a fun cut to pamper myself a bit. This massive hairloss thing is majorly discouraging. But I want healthy hair as well as long hair. Might as well look on this as an opportunity, right? :(

Thoughts? Ideas? Encouragement? Advice? (I'm definitely keeping the two-week rule in mind.)

If you feel you need a change hun then go for it!! the shorter hair will look thicker i'm sure but I would go and have a chat with a stylist first and take pictures of what you are considering, they will advise you on what will be best for your hairtype etc providing you find a good stylist that you trust etc. I really pray you get the hair shedding issue sorted out you must be very distressed by that. Heres to looking good with your new cut:D I just had mine chopped to a chin length bob about 4 weeks ago, I like it better:)

Getting your hair trimmed back may be a good thing for you if you feel you need it. Bangs however are a major cut and I would be sure you are ready for them. They do help with filling in the temple area and may be perfect for you....I'm just concerned if you don't like them.

Maybe pulling some of your hair in the front and fold them up to get an idea of how they may look on you will help. I have bangs and like the fact that they cover my temple area.

I hope your health is ok, and you pamper yourself.......getting a nice hair style may be just the thing. ;)

That is a very personal choice, and no one can tell you what you should do. But FWIW, I was in the same situation as you last fall - winter, and I ended up cutting my hair short.

I thought about it for a long time, months, but my hair had thinned considerably and I was just not happy with it anymore. Cutting was the right choice for me.

I do miss having longer hair, but I don't regret my decision.

:grouphug: I know how hard it is to be in the situation you are now. I really hope that no matter what you choose, you can get the shedding under control.

Thank you for all the hugs and encouragement. I'm still not exactly sure what I'm going to do, but it's definitely going to be a thought-through thing either way. :flower:

Well i'm glad you are thinking carefully about it and following the 2 week rule....

Is the health situation now under control? Whatever goes on with your hair, your health has to have priority. Of course i can't say for sure but what you described sounds quite like telogen effluvium to me, but the good news is it does grow back.
I just cut my hair from hiplength to just above bra strap length in stages for a similar reason, although on that length the hairloss really did show to the point i felt unable to wear it down.
The bangs thing....well i had them once and almost as soon as i did wished they would hurry up and grow out. I'm thinking if you cut one in, given how you describe the hair at the temples it might highlight the hair stopping there....if that makes sense?
What i found helped me to cope with hairloss was working out a plan to help it regrow......scalp massages, oiling, herbs etc.....helped make me feel less powerless in the situation....whether they actually helped or not (i think they did) they encouraged hope which makes a big difference.
Good luck whatever you decide to do :flower:

I had a mini shed, though i think it may still be going....anyway my hair is looking thinner and i too am going to trim but i'm waiting till after christmas and maintaining till then.
If you want to cut your hair and you want it long (after the cut) it is best to cut only as much as you can get away with, and cut an inch at a time, slowly. Also you can add bangs but if you have never had them it is hard to decide. You can get side swept bangs, but they are a pain to grow out, cut them properly there are some tutorials on youtube. :) Goodluck with whatever you choose!
