View Full Version : Do you share your hair goals/routines with non-LHC people?

Do you guys share your hair goals (or the fact that you have hair goals) with other people?
I used to but eventually I felt that invited criticism and scrutiny (although I haven't really gotten criticism) and so I stopped talking about my hair altogether.
It seems like people don't consider growing hair out as a style choice...it's just something that happens. I especially got raised eyebrows when I showed them just how long I wanted to grow my hair out which is longer than "average". Some people assume I've had some life epiphany or have somehow changed.
I feel that if I don't talk about it anymore people would be appreciative of my hair when it gets longer rather than associate it with obsessive-compulsive disorder. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well enough.
Do you find that talking about your hair brings forth extra "opinions" on you growing it out?

I do share with close friends and family members that understand my passion for long hair. :) but anyone else? Naw. No reason. Who needs the negative comments?

Like above, I only share with those close to me. With anyone else, though, I do tend to hold back. Sharing these goals and routines does help these people. For example I got my sister hooked on coconut oil and aloe gel.

I really don't talk about my hair much. If someone asks about it (and people will invariably be asking about it all day if I'm silly enough to leave it down), I answer their questions, but other than that, I will only occasionally comment about my goals or routines to dbf or to my mom. Dbf takes me seriously, but then, my hair was one of the things that caught his attention about me in the first place, and my mom thinks I'm completely out of my mind, but she likes her chin-length hair and doesn't understand why anyone wuld have their hair longer.
So, yeah, I don't talk excessively about my hair and try not to draw too much attention, so people have fewer opportunities to share their opinions, which I'm grateful for. The people who come up to me and ask about my hair of their own accord usually only have positive things to say, and those with more negative opinions stay back, so I'd rather just let others initiate hair-related conversations.

My family doesn't get it, at all. So I don't tell them about it, usually. Occasionally I forget to put something away and I get questions like "why is the olive oil on top of the computer desk?" and "why is there vinegar in the bathroom?" but I keep my responses to a minimum. I've never shared my length goals with my mum or dad, only with my boyfriend, in passing. He likes my hair long, but he doesn't really care how long. :lipssealed: Or if he does, he won't admit it.
Excellent question. It's really interesting to see everyone's responses.

When other people bring it up, I will answer questions or say thank you, etc. That's it, really. I got my mom using coconut oil and braids. Other than that, nah.

I've shared information on honey lightening with a friend, but she doesn't know exactly where the information comes from.
My goal is classic and I'm already nearly there (started growing from around hip) so I haven't really had much to say about my goal length to anyone. What I don't like sharing with non-LHCers is that I cut/S&D my own hair, it almost always gets me weird reactions. Mostly I try to avoid IRL conversations about my hair, it's often a rather awkward experience for me.
I'm pretty closeted about my hairy hobby, only my parents (they take my hair pics), boyfriend and one (longhaired) friend know what I spend most of my time on the internet doing. :p

Routines? Yes, if asked, I'm happy to share information.
Goals? Not so much. It tends to freak people out. :uhh:

I don't really talk about my hair unless someone asks about it. I'm fine with sharing knowledge about hair products, oils and routines, but I never talk about my goals. My boyfriend knows about my project and about LCH though, but he's very supportive and loves the idea of longer hair :D He also doesn't mind taking hair photos for me.

If the subject of hair comes up i may mention something. If someone asked me i would be happy to share. I don't usually tell the grams. As she was already frustrated when she learned i was gonna try the ACV on my hair (that i had made her get). My friends not so much i mean they know how much i like it and when we get on the subject i have mentioned my washing method. I was with one of my friends when i was looking for oil and she asked why i had wanted it so i tried to explain about that. i have mentioned s&d and got some strange reactions. I don't tell my friends everything. Last time my friend was here she was kinda joking about how I'm obsessed with hair and on a community and spent 20 dollars on shampoo and condish. Sooo if they ask about something i know the answer to then i'll bring it up but other then that i tend to keep it to TLHC.

I've mentioned to some people that I am trying to grow my hair longer, but I don't really share my goals or my routines. I'm new to routines and some of the lhc products though, so I imagine I may be sharing some hair advice with family/friends in the future =)

I did once with a couple of girlfriends, and was told 'that's too much work' so I don't go there anymore, unless it's with people that kind of care in situations where it makes sense to discuss it, like a friend buying a new shampoo, or getting a deep conditioner from a vendor at festival

it's easier not to tell... people are quick to judge.
especially if your hair care routine dares to be different from the traditional shampoo+condish...

I also will really only share with my family, or anyone who may ask me a question. Other than that I think people would think I'm strange if I only talked about my hair. For me, that is why this site is so awesome, I can get my "hair fix" when I need it which is usually everyday. I do work full time too, so I have a bit of a normal life as well. ;)

I don't mention this even to folks close to me. They are not interested, so why bother? I might even get strange looks and very offensive comments when I mention that I wash only once a week or even less, for instance (I know for a fact, that MIL was disgusted, when I mentioned this).
So, no I don't share goals and routines with others, except when asked directly.

When I started growing my hair out and stopped colouring ( pretty much at the same time) I would get a few comments and questions about my roots, "Kate your roots need doing", " when are you going to colour your hair" etc. A year later and the questions and comments have now stopped. I get the occasional "your hair has grown", I just answer 'yes' and leave it at that. DH is the only person who knows about LHC and my goals. He has been very supportive from the start.

That I'm growing out again is hard to miss for those that see me regularly so when asked I confirm that's the case. Goals and routines? If asked and there's an interest I might share - there are a few around that very well understand what I'm talking about, the majority couldn't care less.

I share my hair goals with my husband. I don't really share them with anyone else outside of LHC, because my mom thinks that long hair is old-fashioned and most of my other friends are (non-longhair) guys and people from my office, and don't seem to care much about hair.

Nope. My ex had no clue this place existed, my b/f is not a fan of long hair (although she's been growing hers) so I never talk hair with her inspite of us haivng almost identical hair types.
Sometimes if I have to take it down to readjust a bun or am out with the person I feel closest and safest with and decide I want to let it down, they or other people will ask about it. I tend to keep my replies to a minimum unless the questions come from that friend when I'm totally honest (but maybe not to the point of telling them about here).

I think if I talk about it as much as here people kinda just don't get it. They don't usually know what to say or think hair is that important. My immediate family know I'm obsessed. They all tease me (in a kind way) about being on here. They know I love this place and try and be funny about it.
My kids, especially my youngest is very happy I'm growing it back. They miss my long hair. So no most people I'm around aren't too impressed with the hair obsession so I save all my comments etc for here.

Like most of the others I really don't talk about my hair unless specifically asked. My roommates normally have questions because they have never seen people take care of their hair the way I do. Sometimes my sisters or my mom come and ask my about specific problems about my hair but thats it. They honestly think I'm a bit strange for wanting waist length curly hair, so i leave it at that.

I only share with my mom and my husband. My mom is growing hers with me so she enjoys hearing all of the great info I get on LHC, and my husband has always wanted me to grow my hair out so I don't mind talking about my goals with him. All of my friends have shoulder length hair or shorter, so they wouldn't understand my obsession.

I only go into detail about my routine with DH, just because he's curious why food items are near or in the bathroom. He's been known to mooch my coconut oil and conditioners, though. Won't go near the rosemary EO. He's extremely happy about my length goals, so I divulge. Outside, though, I'm careful to pick and choose who I can trust with strange hair routines. I tell nobody I wash with shampoo once maybe twice a week. It will give folks who don't know better the willies. Advice? Sure. I'll recommend AVG to anyone and everyone who asks! :inlove: Length goals? I don't think tailbone is that long in the eyes of most folks, so I divulge freely without care. Then again as I've stated on otherthreads, Staten Island is pretty diverse.

I share my hair goals pretty much just with my DH.
The few people that I know who have asked me how long I'm growing it look at me l ike I've lost my mind when I tell them "until it stops growing," so I usually just say, "Oh, a little while longer," and that takes care of it.
I don't dare share my evil plan for terminal length with my mom or sister. They both hate my hair long and have absolutely no trouble saying so.
Strangers never see it down, so it's not an issue.

I share with my husband, who loves the idea of me having super long hair. (We compromised on tailbone, or maybe classic. He would be happy with knee length hair on me, but I think that would be too much for me to handle.) I had been a little shy about talking about the different products I'm trying, worried he'll think I'm too high maintenance. Then, the other day when I was complaining about how long it is taking to grow my hair out, he said "maybe you need some new elixir." So, I guess he's on board for the whole journey! Also, I told him he has to learn to braid. He's looking forward to it!
I also talk to my SIL who has waist length hair. She has been growing it out for her wedding, and will probably cut it after. She loves to change her hair, and has had 3 or 4 different colors since I've known her!

My hair is up out in public (ie work/school etc), so it really doesn't draw too much attention while it's up, so I think that helps in these types of exchanges...
I'm a very helpful person by nature, I just can't help it  so if I'm asked, I will share what I know...People who are close to me know my goals, but I don't broadcast them to everyone...Come to think of it, I don't think I've been asked what my goals are?! I asked DH how long he'd like it...He thinks the current length is nice...I told him that I wanted to just let it grow to see how long it would get, he was fine with that...Honestly, he could care less about the length, he just likes it long.
I've been witching up some formulas and have passed them out to close family and friends for them to try...They keep coming back for more :D I don't claim to know it all, but they must like the results because they come back.

I've never told ANYONE in my real life about my goals and routine. Now and then I'll get a question about hair care and I'll offer very minimal information. I never bring the subject up. I'm sure people have noticed my hair getting long, or may not. I don't really know. I never told anyone I was going to grow it longer. I never shared my pain over that nasty layered cut. It's something I keep to myself. Most people have no great interest in their hair, my hair, or hair in general. I think it's best to keep quiet about hair unless asked a direct question. I've never had anyone act like they wanted a deep, in depth discussion about hair.

What's odd about the scenario isn't a long-haired person telling other people about personal hair goals, but it's anyone - long or short-haired - telling anyone about their hair goals outside of an already existing conversation about hair. From the original post, it's difficult to tell what's precipitating the mention of long hair goals.
This subject comes up here enough, and most old-timers have learned to check their enthusiasm out in the real world because they encounter the same sort of confusion in others, who often misinterpret the longhair's enthusiasm for something off-kilter and obsessive. A fascinating discovery for people new to anything, or fairly new to it, rarely is going to be fascinating to anyone else, or at least outside of a discussion on the subject, which isn't that common.
Pick any subject, such as a hobby, and find an enthusiastic adherent to it who talks about it even occasionally when, say... at work. If they bring it up enough, eventually others are going to wonder what's up. Unless there's a current event to prompt the discussion again, regularly bringing up the subject will indicate to others that the subject is on the one person's mind A LOT. This often is true.
So it's not just hair. Now add the personal aspect of hair. It's a part of our bodies. That gets TMI for some people. Now think about how odd it would be for anyone else to mention their hair goals if their hair is short. A bit unusual? It would be around here.
I actually call my hair "one of my hobbies," because it is freakishly long, and that helps people relate to why anyone might go to this extreme. When I wear it down, other people mention it because it's so noticeable and contrasts so sharply with other people's hair, even other long hair. These aspects often cause people to bring up my hair, and then a brief hair discussion can ensue, but this kind of scenario has natural flow, when others start the conversation.
So I guess it depends on with whom, where, when, how and how often you discuss your hair goals. :)

It really depends on my mood, but anybody who knows me knows at least that i'm "into hair" and in quite a hippy way in their eyes....which i'm more than comfortable with.
Most people think i'm quite eccentric anyway so if asked i have no issue saying i wash with herbs etc.

I occasionally explain to my parents what I'm doing because I have to ask for the ingredients, but other than that, my family thinks it's a bit weird. Especially when I leave the coconut oil out on the counter (my hair loves that stuff) I should probably just get my own and keep it in the bathroom
My mom does however like that I'm taking care of my hair now, so she usually doesn't question it anymore she just gives me odd looks sometimes.
I don't really talk about my plans other than that though. Occasionally with my closest friends I'll talk, but not often.

I divulge (almost) all to dbf. Mostly because I live with him and usually need to forewarn him when I'm beginning a treatment of some sort :p. He's also very supportive and can't wait for my hair to be longer. I did direct one of my old friends here after I told her I was growing again (she was ecstatic since she mourned my cut off hair and always told me it looked nicer longer). I also told my great-aunt that I wanted it long and she was happy because she would examine my hair after any cut and tell me it was too short! She also told me of some of her younger long hair days which was kind of sweet. However, anyone I tell about growing my hair almost never includes any kind of routine or goals. Right now my hair is still short so people just assume I want it a little longer....

Only if we're talking about hair, and then I try to limit it to 'I'm growing it' and vaguely about my routine.
Then again, my friends still think it's hilarious that I only wash twice a week and think I'm the vainest person ever 'cos I'm always rebraiding it.
Quite a lot of people ask me about my hairsticks, though (I'm the only person in my school who wears them, out of about 1200 people, so I'm quite unusual), and I'm always happy to divulge my secrets about them :D

Great question. I don't say much about my hair to others. I think because I don't want to open myself up to negative comments. I'm waiting for the....you looked better in short hair comment....My DH knows my goals and is very supportive. Oh, I borrowed some distilled water from my Mom to make my own defrizz spray. When I told her what I was doing she just rolled her eyes and shook her head. LOL This is why I don't say much about my hair and goals to others.

I told my DBF and mentioned it in passing to my little (16 years) sister. DBF was all in favor of it, he loved my long hair and my wurls :D Little sis wasn't negative as such... :ponder: but immediately asked if that wouldn't be too long. I wonder if it's an age-related thing in her mind. After all, I see girls her age with waist-length hair all the time. I think there is definitely a youthful association with long hair. I guess that explains why so many women tend to go for the chop around a certain age! It's defintely something I've witnessed in the women in my life. The older they get, the shorter their hair gets.
I'm rebelling  :cheese:

Oh, as for my routine - my DBF used to love hearing about all the things I did to my hair! Usually though, the only element of my routine that I'll discuss is that I CO wash, whereupon all eyes promptly dart to my roots to check for the expected oil slick! :rolling: I like to think that I'm spreading the word. My middle sister (21 years) was at first disgusted when I told her that I CO wash ("Oh my god - my sister doesn't wash her hair" :disgust:) but then I asked her if my hair looked dirty. She considered it for a few minutes and then replied that no, my hair looks very soft. :eyebrows:

No, I don't talk about it much often. When someone asks, it's just how long have I been growing it and if it's difficult to take care of it. I response minimally, since they usually don't really care. Otherwise, I'm a bit more open about my passion for long hair with my brother and mother, but again, not that much. It's just not their cup of tea.
And I don't bother anymore explaining to them about the different methods of cleansing the hair or the chemistry behind it, or the hair types and the effect of hairtools etc. It's not important to them.

I have not confessed my desire to have very long hair to people around me(except my sister) because I am afraid it will never happen, and then I'll look stupid:rolleyes:.
Hair doesn't come up in conversation much with me because I don't have the type of hair that people would think is very nice. It's kind of bad. Honestly--not fishing here for compliments, it's just fact.
No one would ever ask me what I use in my hair. Or maybe if they did, it would be so they could be sure not to use the same thing! :D

I tell everyone about my hair goals if it comes into the conversation. I am a big believer in positive thinking so I think you really need to believe in your goal and have as many supportive people around you as possible who are cheering you on. My mother measures my hair, one of my friends took a photo of my hair and my friends regularly ask about my hair. I've told them about the LHC & even about putting thrush on my hair! I am a very cheeky person & I like to make everything into a joke. I will get the last laugh when my hair is down to my waist next year.
OT: I know you're not fishing for compliments GirlCat but I think your hair looks really sexy, gorgeous & thick from the photos. It has improved so much from the time that I started to post here in May earlier this year. After coming to the LHC, I have noticed that so many people's hair have got split ends, are damaged or tapering. I would not have noticed before & I'm sure most people don't. I'm sure the people around you would be horrified if they knew you thought badly of your hair.

I used to try but then I discovered that nobody is particularly interested so now I limit hair talk to here or when I'm with my stylist. I can have limited hair conversation with my DD, although she did once tell me "I have more important things to think about than hair!"

I don't because all I've heard from some is "Wait till you get older, you'll WANT to cut your hair and you are going to." I'm like...errm no, I want it to grow to my tailbone if it will get there!

It never really comes up in conversation, so no. I do get compliments sometimes and then I just say thank you. When discussions of hair and hair products do come up in conversation, I feel out of the loop because for most women hair discussions are about salons, boxed dye, and supermarket products. Given that I put food products and herbs in my hair, and that I would never never use some of these products people think are so great or go to a salon to get color, I just keep my mouth shut; I don't want to look judgmental or get into an argument.

I'm lucky that two of my best friends (Beldaran and Belisama) are both members here, so that's not an issue, and my sister has long hair, although she's not a member.
My fiance is very supportive of my hair goals and while I try not to go to to such great lengths (As he likes to say, "I'm not your girlfriend" which is his way of tipping me off that it's time to go geek out with the girls a bit), he always acknowledges that my hair is important to me. He looks at my new toys when I show him, helps me henna and trims for me. I can't as for more than that :p
People in general? Eh, if they ask I'll talk about my routine or henna a bit, but to the extent I do here? Not a chance in hell.

Absolutely not! I had to tell DH any best friend and my sisters that I was growing it. I kept it vague though. I'm certainly not telling anyone that I'm just going to see how long it will get before it stops growing. When anyone remarks on how long it is I just reply "It's getting there." and change the subject quick.
I'm growing it for me, no-one else, and it feels like a very personal subject so I don't want to discuss it. DH has a better idea now, I think, than when I started, but he's not really interested as long as I don't cut it short - pixie. No-one else cares at all. That suits me fine.

Yes, 30, my hair has improved, I know, and the curls hide a lot of the flaws--but it has a long way to go! I really don't want to cut my hair, but the growing in layer is about 10" shorter than the rest of it. I'll just have to put up with the see-through ends for the next few years!
You should stop beating yourself up over your hair. I think it looks great! Look at how far it has come since you finished chemo and radiation. :joy: Now, stop with the negative thoughts! :D
You need to practice what you preach, missy!:eyebrows:

My family doesn't get it, at all. So I don't tell them about it, usually. Occasionally I forget to put something away and I get questions like "why is the olive oil on top of the computer desk?" and "why is there vinegar in the bathroom?" but I keep my responses to a minimum. I've never shared my length goals with my mum or dad, only with my boyfriend, in passing. He likes my hair long, but he doesn't really care how long. :lipssealed: Or if he does, he won't admit it.
Excellent question. It's really interesting to see everyone's responses.
Your response pretty much makes up mine lol. I tell some of my best friends, though, one who already has waist length hair (and still blowfries and its *beautiful*), and another who is a curly and she just likes hair the same way I do. Like when I talk about hair in public I feel like such a dork though, especially when I say "OMG I think the growth rate's gona double with this next concoction!". My boyfriend doesnt mind though I think it amuses him. When I told him how I was S&Ding he chuckled and said how "cute" it was that I was getting really into caring for my hair.
And yeah haha when my parents find odd things in odd places (olive oil in the bathroom) I blush and I'm like.... :cough: :runs:
ETA: OH! and the reactions I got with my friends about the BS/ACV times, hahaha they thought that was pretty freaky. My boyfriend actually joined me though, he was doing for a while (and stopped around the time I did) :)

My fiance' thinks I'm out of my mind! As do my brother and friends. DF loves to tell anyone he can about my "hair club" lol. Oh well they'll never understand
My brother thinks its hilarious. He tells me, "Erika, you shouldn't be allowed, your hair is too short. Do they have a short hair community too?"

I share my long hair goals with my husband and my mother...they've both have seen me with long hair.
My hubby is excited to see me once again with long hair, and will definitely tell me if he's noticed some growth. :) He's my official measure-er!

I share info on a need to know basis with DH and my mom. Other than that I don't bring it up or talk about.

Great question! No one is really all that interested in my hair hobby...sigh... DH is on board for going long, but the details are irrelevant to him. My hair is almost always up, so I only get comments on the rare occasions that I wear it down. I would certainly share if asked, but I generally don't strike up too many conversations about my hair routine.

I have to agree that it's just like any other hobby. How many of you want to know that I'm saving up for a Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pen, that I have half a dozen bottles of ink and that each pen has it's own preference for which ink it wants?
The more considerate people understand, even if their eyes glaze over. But I refrain from telling people unless they ask. Though I try to temper it so that it doesn't sound as unusual. (Like I might mention that I use herbs or whatever to wash with, but I won't mention that I sometimes go 2 weeks without washing and once went 7 months without doing so...)

Usually not. I'll share my hair care routine if asked. Otherwise, I find there isn't much point in talking about long hair with people who have short hair. Their reactions tend to be along the lines of  or  or :crazyq:.

I share sometimes, but not as much as I used to. But I think it's all in how you present the information. IME, stating a goal as opposed to asking what the other person thinks usually don't get as rude resposes.

I have always gone to some lengths to conceal certain aspects of my hair routine (infrequent washing, no blowdrying, no trimming, extreme pickiness about hair elastics and combs, etc.), because, being a longhair in complete isolation, I always feared these things really were kind of crazy. Although I probably won't go around announcing my hair peculiarities spontaneously (as others have pointed out, this would be a bit of an odd thing to do for any hobby), the LHC has given me enough confidence that I'm no longer going out of my way to hide them.
No one has ever asked about my length goals; the only length-related comments I've received are: "How long did it take to grow your hair?" (why do people ask that? Surely they don't really care?), "Your hair would look better if you cut it", and the perennial favourite, "You have long hair."

No, I do not share my hair goals with Real Life people, unless I know them really well or we are discussing hair. Even if I do share anything about my hair I keep the discussion short. I don't invite much discussion of my hair.

omgosh I can totally relate! I think that is whats so great about this board, we can be open and discuss things that others may find out of the ordinary.

So far, I've told all my friends about goals and routines. I have a friend who is extremely interested to find out what the contents of my mister are on any given day. I turned her on to oiling, which has turned out to be a godsend for her somewhere in the curlier 3's coarse hair and to other gentler treatment. My partner loves my hair and is always happy to listen to my babbling about hair stuff and is just as happy as I am when my hair gets closer to the next landmark.
I have an irl long hair friend, who has asked for my help/advice and not taken any of it :\ but she doesn't give me any crap and only looked at me funny for a few seconds when I said my goal was floor length plus, then said, "good luck with that".
If someone asked me for my advice or whatever, I'd tell them. I don't randomly start conversation with people or anything though. I think that's on the same level as giving a random person weight loss or make up advice

Yes and no. I sometimes mention hair things to my family, but with other people, the subject never comes up.
Hair talk in my workplace focusses on new colours and new cuts, so I have nothing to add. Also, I can't imagine buttonholing colleagues and/or friends to talk about my hair -- or any other personal obsession -- and I would hope they'd be equally respectful, and not bore me with tales of golf, fishing, bodybuilding, etc.

If I am asked then I will.
Most of my friends know Ive gone a lot more natural and from time to time ask for advice.
I have to be careful not to push it on people though!

apart from my boyfriend and mom, everyone else I have told about my goal of tail bone length hair has given me the "are you crazy?" look. :/ they all say it's too hard to maintain. I figure to just keep that to myself because it doesn't really matter.

I don't really share my hair goals because I no longer have any. I'm just letting my hair do what it wants and my husband trims it once every year/year and a half.
Occasionally I get stopped by people in the store and am usually asked about my hair-care routine. That's when I share it. Otherwise, the only time I talk hair is here.

wow, so cool to see I'm not the only one.
I sometimes go in the other direction and try to come off indifferent in public when it comes to my hair. For example I'll get a complement on my updo and I'll just be like "yeah, I just threw it up there" when in reality I spent the night before on LHC learning and practicing it, and 15 minutes perfecting it in the morning.
I've tried to undo the damage I've caused in relation to my family and close friends already knowing about my obsession but it's no use. That ship has sailed. I even get a lot of "wow, it's really growing" comments (w/ no reference to hair b/c we already know what's being commented on!) from family and close friends.

I tend to talk a lot about whatever my newest interest is, it's just the way I am, so the first to hear of this were my mother and my sister. My mother, who has had chin-length hair for my entire life, did not at all get that I could be interested in hair, of all things. She's had short hair her adult life because she can't be bothered to fiddle with anything longer, or even wait for it to dry. My little sister tolerates it with amusement, as she does most of my antics.
The rest of my family doesn't really come into it. My dad has no interest in hair, really, he just likes it when we have low-maintenance hair that's nice and girlish. I did mention I wanted longer hair to my brother, because I knew he would approve, as he loves long hair and thinks it is beautiful and feminine.
I generally don't talk a lot about it to random people, but I will participate in a conversation about hair if someone brings it up. Just because I want my hair long doesn't mean I can't admire a good dye job or a beautiful cut on my friends' hair! I don't tell people off for blowdrying, I'll help them straighten it if they ask, and give advice about products if they want. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to allow others to know you've an interest in hair, as long as you realize it when their eyes are getting glazed.

No. I share routines with my husband but only if they come up in conversation or he's wondering why I have coconut oil in the bathroom or whatever.

Only close family and my boyfriend know about my hair obsession and routines. I have had a lot of weird looks and questions from a lot of people so I tend to keep it to myself, unless asked otherwise. For some reason people just can't understand why in the world I could possibly want to have long hair

I'll share with my friends or if someone asks. And I've started chatting with my new SIL about henna and cassia after noticing a box of Light Mountain in her bathroom.

Yep, i share with my niece and friends. they are all very helpful even if sometimes one or two critize my goals telling me that older women can't grow hair longer than waist. first i smile and tell them i'm not older, i'm just starting to grow into my self and my love of life. not old or young, just right.
But i've learned it all depends on diet, care and terminal length. so i'm happy to just smile at those friends who critize me and tell them i'll see what happens in 3 years.
and i do share this community with some people, specially those that need and want to learn how to care for their hair better. whether they plan to grow it long or not.

At first I was telling people about LHC in general and my goals etc., but then I got a few snide remarks. These days, if the topic of hair comes up, I'll talk about it, but otherwise, not so much.

I do. I never really get neagative attention for my hair, and I'll give away my "secrets" to anyone who asks. I've done it many times. (I've told people who've asked me my skincare or makep routine as well because it makes me feel good). On Monday, my husband and I went out for an anniversary dinner, and the waitress said that I have beautiful hair. She asked how I got it so shiny, and I told her what shampoo and conditioner I use, how often I wash, etc. Her hair was gorgeous too, so it made me feel really good.

I do chatter on about it to my husband, but that's about it. He doesn't get it, but he smiles and nods. :D
I do talk to one other non-LHCer about it, but she has waist length hair and uses a lot of the methods I do, so she "gets it."
