If you put it up often in the same place, it might hurt. Or some peoples scalp might be a bit sensitive. I've had this too and I've worn braid for a month or so, the pain faded. Protecting your hair is important, but protecting your scalp as well.

The only problem is that, aside from a twisted bun secured with a hair safe hair tie, I don't really know HOW to wear my hair up. I can't french braid on myself so Im limited to a classic 3 strand plain jane braid, but Im willing to try other less complicated ones. Im trying to stretch my trims & living at the beach + summer fun is KILLER on hair!! Sand, wind, salt water, chlorine, relentless sun, boating (EXTREME WIND = very tangled & whiped about = major splits). So, I figured I would ask yall :) Since yall wear your hair up so much I figure yall are Pros & I would love some of yalls guidance on: a) ways to wear my hair up in a way that will protect it B) some braids that are not crazy hard that I might be able to pull off & C) what should I use to secure my hair that wont cause breakage (hairties vs hair toys). I really hope yall can advise ... but if its too random Ill post it elsewhere :)

The "Bun" and "Braid" Threads as well as the "how are you wearing your hair today" thread has great ideas! I think your bun with the hair safe elastic or even a claw clip would be just fine! Rock that English braid ;-)

After wearing wet hair down and swimming with it on a windy day, my tangles were insane. In order to 'punish' myself, I decided I had to wear my hair up for a while. Since then, I haven't been wearing it down (except for air drying, and sometimes half an hour or something at home just to 'air' it). I'm not sure how long I'm going to wear it up, perhaps until I reach waist, which is due between January-March next year I hope.

I've been cheating a bit because I have been wearing my hair down for a few hours last week. Not always really on purpose, it just didn't stay in braids or buns and I kept on losing hair bands and eventually I permanently lost my favourite hair stick...

Thank you! :o And wearing my hair up made a HUGE difference in split ends, definitely when it gets colder like winter. So wearing it up as long as you can is definitely a good thing to do! Personally my first goal was to wear it up for an entire school year (finished that in June), my second goal was to wear it up in my summer break (almost finished that) and my new goal will be to wear it up for another school year (then I'll be at 728 days). If such a long goal is possible for you, go for it! And if you feel like it's too much, you could try to only wear buns when you're outside or wear them at certain days. Or you could wear braids in between as well. It's not as protective as a bun, but it's more protective than wearing it down. And buying some nice hair toy is definitely a big motivation as well :D

I would buy more hair toys but the thing is that my hair is too short/thick for a lot of the buns out there, and my 3 pronged hair fork seems to be the only thing that keeps my hair in a bun. It's hard to enjoy having my hair up (even though hair can be annoying when it's down) when I can only do the same buns over and over again. You know? No variation is boring.
It's so cool how you kept making new goals for yourself, and you stuck with it! :P

Well, I just do a LWB every day, since it's the only bun I can do other than a disc bun, and right now my disc buns are looking wonky (they're turning bee-butty, which is not a look I like on myself). The way I mix it up for myself is to rotate my toys and record that. So you could try that, if you like. :) I'll probably stop recording when I get to a year though, which is coming up soon. I'll still wear it up everyday, but just won't continue posting in this thread. I started in this thread initially to get into the habit of wearing it up, and I certainly have! Can't really stand wearing it down anymore, actually. :D

It's just that I like wearing my hair down because I get to be like "OMG Look how healthy and pretty your hair is." I just think that eventually I'll want the option to have it down instead of the constant styles I wear now.
LOL I am looking forward to having a dramatic moment when I let my hair out of it's bun and it's sooo long and see how people react. Why do you like wearing your hair up so much? Just curious

I've had layers starting from ear/chin length and I hated them straight away, so I wanted to grow them out. I got rid of them some months ago (it took me three years!!), but those layers never got an actual trim, if you get what I mean. So they're prone to split ends. Wearing my hair up helps A LOT. If I would wear it down, I would get split ends really really really fast. Now the plan is to grow my hair for the rest of 2014 and then maintain for at least 6 months. This way those old layers get trimmed and will be healthy again. Also, I study at university and if I'm not in class, I'm studying. So wearing it up is just the easiest thing.

And yes, I'll wear it down as well when I've reached my goal! I can't wait :D

You apparently have 32 inches of hair now - so jealous of your length lolz. Why'd you hate them? My mom's trying to convince me to get layers again and IDK I think my braids would look AWFUL if I got layers.

I know quite some (really) long hairs with a chin length layer. My shortest length layer also is a little past jaw. Mine resulted from having to grow out bangs, but I definitely keep a part of these these short. A lot of people don't like wearing their hair slick back (including myself) and enjoy wearing a few shorter locks in the front loose to frame their face. Those often end at around jaw length.

My hair was somewhere between shoulder and APL length, so that's the reason why my layers started at chin length. My hair is 2a when I use the right products (with hydrolyzed keratin) and don't touch it when it's air drying. But when my waves are gone (which doesn't take long), my ends start to flip. Nothing wrong with that, but layers made it... weird. It didn't suit me.

And you're not the only one who needs to wait before she reaches her goal length :wink: I was 17 when I started to grow out my hair, too. The upper layer started at my chin (even higher) and is now almost at hip. This didn't happened overnight, you know :shrug: It took me 3.5 years. You at least don't got layers to grow out. You'll get there. Just be patient. :)
