Hello. :) I'm pretty new here but I hope it's alright if I join. My hair's just below Bsl when stretched and I nearly always wear it down the first couple days after washing. I'm curious as to whether wearing it up more will help keep my ends healthy. I'm kind of scared to actually commit though, so I think at first I'll challenge myself to a week and see where that goes.

This is a great idea. I'm in for 30 days, possibly extending to 100 if it goes well.

It's going to be a challenge for me as I'm not APL yet, hoping to get there in the autumn. But I am reasonably handy with braids and parandas, and have a reasonable quantity of hairtoys from last time I had long hair, so here goes!

Day 1: French twist held with ketylo
Day 2: What-is-this?-I'll-put-a-flower-in-it-so-it-looks-intentional flipped twist type thing held with flower spin pin + 2 mini spin pins.

By the way, I'm gonna keep it sweet and simple and aim for 1 month of updos, with a goal to not wear the same style more than 2 days in a row and to wear a total of at least 6 different styles through the month. Maybe it will inspire me to do more in the future, as I tend to just keep my hair in a side braid all of the days....

Help! I started this challenge... I lasted two days. :( I feel so ugly with my hair up!! I wore it up Monday and Tuesday and felt like it looked terrible, so here we are Wednesday and it's down. It looks pretty, but I know it's not "protected" this way. Any suggestions, tips?! Thanks, ladies! (Hair is 1aMi, APL going for WL again.)

two_wheels
March 12th, 2014, 08:29 AM
kjb926, what do you not like about it when it's up? Is it not flattering your face shape, or does is feel like it tugs your scalp, or something else? Sometimes different styles can look better, and people might have some helpful suggestions.

I feel like it doesn't flatter my face at all. I have a long skinny face..I guess I've always kind of "hid" behind my long hair. I feel hideous and unkempt when it's up lol. Plus, it doesn't seem to want to STAY up, so there's that. Seems no matter what I put it in, it's so silky that it never stays.

two_wheels
March 12th, 2014, 09:29 AM
Hmm I envy your silkiness but see why it must be frustrating.
What about a faux bob? It would protect your ends, but you'd still feel like you have hair around your face.
Or the thing where you tuck it into a hairband? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIPrzATuBec

Day9:Twisted bun held with soft elastic
Day10: diagonal french braid (i think this is my new go to, so easy and still looks good!)
Day11:Ponytail - Not especially protected, but I play with it less when its up, and it tangles less so I guess thats a bonus. Twisted it into a bun later inthe day because it got windy and I whipped myself in the eye with my ponytail. ouch.
Day12:Had it up in just a twisted bun held by a big jaw clip - except right after swimming my laps! It was sooo gorgeous outside finally that I layed out on a towel in the yard and let my hair down to dry in the warm sun :) It was ultra relaxing, dried in super pretty waves, and then went back up into my bun when I got up lol.

Day 7: wash day, so down to dry, then into an English braid.
Those are my 7 days. I thought my scalp would be complaining a lot more than it has. Since it's still basically winter, I think I'm going to try for a month and see how that goes. My rules aren't overly complicated. All hair must be contained, leaving it down to dry is fine since it would never dry otherwise. I'll try to go till April 10.

NOTES: I seem unable to do a french braid to save my life... I tried Dutch again and got it after some time, so I suppose that's my winner for now. I still feel like I'm doing more harm than good currently as it takes SO MUCH coaxing and tangling of my hair to get it in the braid. But hopefully the more I practice the better (and more beneficial) it will become.
As for the nautilus bun, it was ALMOST unmanageable at this length but I managed to make it work. AND it is a pretty firm hold for me, so yay!

I have a question I hope someone can help me with. If I wear my hair in one hairstyle all the time will my hair become damaged? I've been trying to wear my hair up more often and I've been wearing a simple bun with spin pins. I just wrap my hair around until its a bun and stick the pins in. My hair isn't long enough to do anything else with. Sometimes I braid it but its easier to do a bun. Should I just move the bun every day to different parts of my head? Thanks.

As long as the hair isn't being pulled tightly in the same place every day, I think you'd be fine. The great thing about spin pins is that they hold the hair securely in place without the need to pull it tight.

You should be okay; there can be damage from repetitive styling, but as long as the style isn't super tight, it will be fine. I do recommend varying the position of the bun if you can, so the stress isn't concentrated in one area all the time. :)

Why grow my hair long and have it up!!!
The goal, for me at least, is to keep the ends of my hair protected from damage so they won't break off. This way as my hair grows, I can retain the new length.

SereneCurls
March 23rd, 2014, 07:36 AM
Thank you! I did have a fun first day. :)

I have a question: the reason I don't do "up" very well, over my life, is neck strain. It's a little better high on my head, worst at the center back, and only so-so at the nape of my neck. Double-doos over each ear, are pretty comfy, however.

Now... I suspect this is my fault. Since I take it down when it gets "tired", a don't put it back up... I haven't really given my neck a chance to deal with it, right?

Here’s what I’ve figured out so far. Any updo that involves sectioning is easier on the neck. So far this has worked best for me with braided updos, or making a bun of the top section of hair, braidig the bottom section and wrapping it around the bun. Also, I don’t really know how to describe this, but what you use to hold the updo really matters. The more scalp hair the weigt is distributed over, the less heavy it feels. I think maybe this is why sticks haven’t worked out for me, though I have been practicing with them. With flexi8s and spin pins, I can secure the updo to the scalp hair at multiple points, and the whole thing seems to weigh less. I’d love more suggestions as well.

I think I may be off a day or two.

That will be my everyday style from now on. I don't want to do lots of different things with my hair, so from now on I will be the boring one on this thread with the same style most days. Once I reach my goal of bsl (stretched) I intend to wear my hair down in a side braid or loose side pony or segmented pony anyway as I like the look and feel of it down but not completely "out". So for now I will braid and then pin the braid up. I like simple.

Anyone have any ideas on how to wear a ponytail or bun all day without getting a headache? I feel like I must have a really sensitive scalp - I get the worst headache/sore scalp after wearing my hair up all day, unless I tie it very, very loose.

I also find ponytails uncomfortable, so I try not to wear them often. In general, asking an elastic to hold up the weight of your hair just doesn't turn out overly well. I'd suggest looking into things like spin pins, flexi8s, and other clips that will support your hair's weight without pulling or putting pressure on your scalp hair.
