SO happy I stumbled upon this thread! It has inspired me to keep my hair up. No lie... prior to this thread, I was keeping my hair down for almost the entire year since that was the style that I most preferred. Things started to change for me when I got a taste of Santiago's summer heat. It was very damaging to my hair, and I couldn't stand how dry my ends felt. So, after being inspired by your posts, I have now been keeping my hair up/braided for practically 6 days out of the week! Never saw that one coming...

Decided that I wanted to try something different and started out with 2 side braids and a gibson tuck.

I dunno what I did wrong with the gibson tuck, but either there is too much hair for it (but I did it when my hair was longer?) or the initial pony was too low, it was sitting on my neck and driving me crazy, so I now have the 2 braids going into a larger high pony, braided then flipped and held witha large black maximus. So far so good.

I have a question for people. On Saturday, i went to the gym and put my hair in a high pony, clips, sticks and forks don't hold my hair up when I am jumping around, so I kept it in the pony.

Afterwords, my hair was tangled and matted. What go to styles do you use that use minimum amount of fastening but still keeps your hair up?

My hair has plenty of texture, so it's easy to put up, but gets heavy.

Thoughts? suggestions? should I take my question elsewhere? :-)

My hair is quite fine, so this may not work for you, but I find a hypno bun held with a flexi8 is solid enough for me to play badminton in, which has a fair amount of jumping around. I would have thought something like a flexi8 would be better at holding hair firmly than a stick - more grip!

I am going to rejoin this challenge. This year I managed to wear my hair up for 5-6 months but for the past 2-3 months i have been using the hair straighteners 1-2 times a week, been wearing my hair down almost everyday and have slipped a little on my hair journey. But I have had a trim (finally found a hairstylist who actually listened when i said trim!!), am ditching the hair straighteners again and joining this challenge...again :D I currently have my two French braids pinned up, which is probably one of my go to hair styles along with my high bun.

I'm not really able to do anything amazing with my hair because it is still a little too short, but I am proud to say that I have been doiong very well with this challenge. I let my hair dry down but then I will usually clip it up. I can either clip it up or have it in a ponytail... that's about it... for now at least. :)

Look up the term 'upsweep'. There are some lovely styles.

Hi Kira94, you can do quite a number of different updos with a single hairstick. Lazy wrap bun, pencil bun, nautilus bun, gibraltar bun -- search for those on YouTube and you'll find lots of tutorials that'll show you how to do them. With bobby pins you could do a classic cinnamon bun, and probably a French twist as well (there's a good video tutorial by Hypnotica for the "lazy French twist" on longer hair; it's quick and not at all difficult).

As for other hairtoys, I'm very fond of hair forks. I found them easier to use than hairsticks when my hair was shorter; they hold very well, they look great, and they aren't necessarily too expensive. You might also see if you can get hold of some spin pins -- they're inexpensive and many people rave about them. (Disclaimer: they don't work for me at all, but then neither do Ficcares; mileage can and will vary.)

Katleen: i have noticed a difference, slowly my main body of hair has been growing, which is one of my main concerns. My hair is both fine, and yet curlyish so it gets REALLY KNOTTY. this leads to lots of problem with my ends, especially seeing as my hair is cut in layers. Wearing it up has really helped grow out my hair and thats my main goal right now, just to grow, and grow and grow my hair some more. I can always have my layers neatened up and fixed when i've reached my hair length goal.

Kamikaze Hair and Katleen: Wearing it up really does work for gaining and preserving length. I've been wearing mine up every day for going on two years now and I've not had to trim off any of the growth I've had in that time. My ends are in great shape and my braid tassel hasn't become any thinner despite the fact that it's now well over 20cm further down from my scalp. Plus, updos are fun! :)
