It is generally best to use a range of updos to avoid repeated rubbing in the same place, but wearing it up is usually more protective than having it down and getting tangled and caught on things.

Hello! Wearing hair up is a way to protect it from damage. There are lots of ways that hair can be damaged, including getting caught in doors, seatbelts, etc. or rubbing up against rough materials. If it's out in the wind, it tangles like crazy and detangling is not only a pain in the rear, but also a potential way to cause more breakage.

As long as you're wearing looser updos that aren't made in the same place every day, your hair should be fine. And by not being in the same place, I mean alternating placement. I wear cinnamon buns every day (the bun you probably think of when I say "bun" - it looks like a cinnamon roll), but I will place it near the crown of my head, then the nape of the next day, then in the center the day after that. Hope that helps!

DAY 1
I have decided to try to wear my hair up until I get it cut one length in August. Right now the longest layers at the back are slightly past my shoulders, the shortest layers near the front are slightly past my chin. Like I said, in August I'll have it cut one length, by then the shortest layer should be halfway between my chin and collarbone, hopefully closer to the latter!

I will just be doing a loose messy bun, every day, unless I am going somewhere special, then I will wear it down. The reason I want to wear it up is so that I can stop playing with it, stop touching it, stop worrying about it, and stop needing to unnecessarily damage it with washing, brushing and even occasionally heat styling. I am trying to just forget about it until August and hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised with the length when August arrives :p

Is it too late to join this challenge? I work at a restaurant and have to have my hair up most of the time anyway...I get so bored with just repeating the same styles day in and day out. One of the reasons I joined this community was because there are so many more options I have discovered and this challenge is the perfect opportunity to try them out! If I can join, I would like to start out today with Isilya's Woven Bun

I haven't had a chance to read all of this thread, but I'm going for the year. I usually wear it up but recently had to have about 3 inches cut off due to a considerable amount of damage, so I'm incredibly protective right now.

My goal is to gain a fair bit of length (hopefully APL, currently just on shoulder) and for a bit more shine and health.

So today was day one, two English braids secured at the nape with a clip to protect my ends (I think I'll be doing a lot of this

I've gotten my days mixed up already! Yesterday was day 4 not 3.

Day 5: Wash day today so was down for a little drying and then put into a high pony with a headband. It was so nice to have a ponytail with no frizz in it for the first time in years
(and without the aid of a straightener).
