Day 53 - Waterfall braid (from Torrinpaige's latest tutorial, so many thanks to her!) into an assortment of failed buns; gave up and wore it into what would have been a half-up if the clip hadn't been in the nape of my neck.

Put my friend's hair into waterfall braids this evening too! :cheese:

Day 8: sock bun

This seems to be a hairstyle I keep forgetting about. I don't know why. I love sock buns. But I wear them for a while and then get bored and completely forget about it. I'm glad I saw a thread about them though b/c it's super comfortable.

Day 3: Lazy wrap with Timberstone Turnings holly stick. Not loving it, so I might braid it or something instead.

Do you all let your hair dry loose? My hair will never dry if I put it up while wet. It was loose after washing for 12+ hours last night and was still damp this morning.

Ok, after 2 failed attempts at wearing my hair up for a year I am going to try doing it again. Rules for myself are either a full updo or all of my hair in a braid or two, and to only let down on special occasions (like I want to wear it down for homecoming) and on wash day while it dries. I'm becoming a braid addict, so I'm pretty sure it won't be so hard this time around. :)

I am still relatively new to this wonderful site, and I'm still trying to figure out the reasoning behind the hair up challenges. Is it due to the basic need for a challenge or does it help protect the hair? Sorry for my naïvety

LoversLullaby

A lot of people do the challenge for different reasons. I do the challenge to protect my hair and to try and benignly neglect it. It is different for every person involved.

- This seems like a very good challenge !

I have started a week ago with similar idea but I feel ugly when my hair isn't out, but does it still count if I do my hair in 2 braids ?

It's no really *up* but I don't like when my hair is all on my head, looks funny imo . .

Anywho, I have been doing this hairdo for a week now, thinking keeping my hair in braids is friendly for it and stops me from playing with it too much ! :P

RedheadMistress....you can make your own rules about what counts as up. Braids count for me....anything as long as all of my hair is contained somehow. So, braids, yes. Ponytails and half-ups, no. Good luck with your challenge!

It doesn't feel such a challenge any more; very occasionally I allow myself a 'down' day but on balance I far prefer it up, especially if I'm doing anything!

Alright, so I haven't checked in recently simply because I've been doing the same thing over and over again.

3 weeks down, 6 weeks to go, AND I wore my half up the other day, so no more half ups until September. This isn't too bad. Braiding it at night has been the hardest adjustment. Wearing it up is easy because it's so hot out still. Hopefully I'll be at midback by the time I'm done!

I thought how I will go on and decided the following.
I go for 1000 days, but I will have 33 days to wear it down. ( I had 34, but I had two halfs already (135 and 155))
braids(if not wrapped), ponytails and half-ups count as down
I will still let it down during night and while drying. Angelthadiva and Islandgrrl are very inspiring for me, so I decided to give it a go.

Ideally I will have reached my goal length when I am finished with it. :cheese:

Okay, since it's so gosh darn hot out anyways, and I'm back in my own place with access to all my hairtoys, I'm going to sign up for a month!
Until September 16th*, I will not wear my hair down AND I will at least try a new style everyday. Because I have yet to make an updo without elastics. Which is ridiculous, I'm at BSL... I don't understand why hairsticks can't seem to hold it up.

*I am giving myself one exception day, as I have a planned cosplay event which I'll need my hair loose for. Chances are though, it'll get so hot I'll end up throwing it in a ponytail anyway.

Welcome to the challenge, Aleria and lajsa! :waving:

Brenda714 - People do this challenge for lots of different reasons - to protect the ends, to stop playing with the hair all the time, to use all the hair toys they've bought :p.........many reasons!

Sarahbrownie - It's your decision as to whether or not braids count. A lot of us (including me) do count them. I'm like you, sometimes I feel like my hair needs a break. And besides that - I work out a lot and I can't wear a bun for lifting weights!

If pigtails count, I'm well past 2 1/2 years now.

:)

I haven't actually gained any length (it's terminal, but I'm open to suggestions) but people who don't see me for awhile think I have because my braids protect it from damage and breakage so it's thicker. I take them out and rebraid every day, but it's only down while I'm getting out the tangles and doing it again. If it starts to feel oily, I'll do a baking soda rinse the next time I remember to get the baking soda before I take a bath, otherwise I WO with the braids still in. I'd guess I need the BS rinse every 6-8 weeks tops, less often in the winter.

I'll never be a super longhair, but the hair I have is very low maintenance and definitely benefits from benign neglect.

My 2 1/2 year old son has high maintenance super spectacular hair and he cries when I lose my patience and talk about cutting it, so it's not like I can't live vicariously until he's old enough to take care of it himself, lol.

I'm doing this because it's way too hot to have my hair down right now! And I'm hoping it'll give me that "Wow, my hair's grown" feeling when I finally do start leaving it down again.
When I grew my hair to waist length as a pre-teen, it was because it was constantly in ponytails/pigtails, and I just kinda ignored it. Putting it up is trying to replicate this.
Oh and Day two - bun formed by wrapping hair around ponytail, secured with two hair forks/sticks/metal pin things. Tried a split bun, didn't work.

I stumbled this week in my commitment to this challenge. I'm past my original goal, and my secondary goal of 6 months is about done, so I'm trying to decide if I could wear it down more without more damage......

but I can just feel the issues of pulling and tangling when I'm out with it down, and I'm not crazy about the attention it draws when it is down...so up is better. Plus, I've had such good results in the past 6 months with my hair improving in health, so I'm going to stick with the updo challenge for another 6 months....so here goes!

My hair is now BSL when dry (finally), so I'm going to start this challenge tomorrow and just go until I don't want to.
My rules, keep hair up when dry, and French braids count even hanging down. I'll have my hair down sometimes when it's drying but not always, and only on special occasions, and when I go for my trim every 3 months since it's the only time my hair ever gets straightened :P

I quit coloring my hair 19 months ago and have that outgrowth, plus I was growing out bleach, blow dry, flat iron damage and layers too. If I cut back to my shortest length I will be back to waist length. I'm trying to baby my hair as much as possible until the chop and after, of course.

You're quite welcome! I hope that your big chop goes well for you, it's always a bit scary, but then you can continue growing with healthy, one length hair in the end! Although, I wouldn't be able to do it all at once either.

I go to church with 4 people that "do" hair for a living. I have been sooooo tempted to ask one of them. Two of them are an absolute NO for me, the other two are a husband/wife couple. The husband has cut DH and the boys hair and is quite good. The husband does the wife's hair and is actually the more experienced of the two, but the wife and I have had lots of long hair chats. I think I could/would trust either one of them to do it.

It's just a significant amount; we are talking more than 10". I've been doing dusting trims for the longest and my ends don't feel bad at all; they actually feel quite nice. UGH, decisions and wrath of DH are keeping me from cutting back...I have mentioned to DH several times that I was going to cut.

DD8 had been begging for a cut. She was at TBL and wanted to go shorter. She's naturally curly and wanted to go back to waist length. I told her if her dad said it was okay, I would cut it back to waist length. We did the big cut last week and she couldn't have been more thrilled. DH just about cried :p

Okay, well, I've been slipping a little. I haven't been braiding it at night. Argh. The thing is, I wonder if braiding it at night was more damaging because in a braid, I lay on it all night, but loose it's tossed over my pillow. Or maybe I'm making excuses :P

Anyway, I'm 4 weeks in, 5.5 weeks left. Oh boy, that sounds like a long time.
I think it is better to sleep with hair loose, as the braid has a lot of hair poking out, which is then rubbed against your back. So I sleep with my hair loose.

Well, islandgrl, you're great motivation, but I think i'll just be doing a month again, as I did earlier this year.

Will do mostly braids I guess, just because I feel more comfortabel with those.

I count sunday as d1:

d1: english braid (3strand)
d2: english braid (3)
d3: rope braid (2)
