Too scared to get a haircut!

Hi Guys,

I havent been on lhc for a while but my hair is now tailbone length! Sorry no camera so no pics just yet....

Anyway, I once got a great hair cut when my hair was long before - very light layers to give it loads more volume. The problem is when it grew out I had it done again only it went wrong and I ended up with shoulder blade length hair and one really thin long layer to my hips!

Now my hair is one length at TB length (took 5 years!) it is rather thin looking and flat and I really want the layers put back. I scared because I hated it 'short' so its not worth it if it goes wrong again.

I just moved to Canada, Edmonton and I was trying to find a long hair specialist (such as George Michael London, England) that I can trust not to take away too much hair but still give me volume. Im so scared to get it done, but I also really want more volume :(

Taylor Momsen's hair is the best example I can think of for layers and long hair (but I kinda want thinner layers still).

First time they took away loads of hair but it ended up looking thicker than before and I didnt lose any length :)

Should I risk it? Any salons I can trust? I do seem to have a psychological attachment to my hair....

Read reviews of salons and pick the best one, and go with clear photos of what you want. Be very explicit about it. Tell the stylist what you DON'T want, so they will be sure not to repeat what happened last time! It's a risk but if you find a reputable salon and a stylist willing to listen, I'm sure it will work out!

Last time I had it done in salon...they cut it so only 1 very thin layer remained long...it was terrible, I had to get 2 major cuts...:(

My hair is also TBL and I'm about to get what you described done. I have strong layers right now (~3 inches) that have been growing out for a year, and I want them cut off and replaced with a 0.5-1 inch layer on a U hemline. I'm going tomorrow to a woman my mother and her friends have been going to for quite a few months (since our other, awesome hairdresser moved >:|). She really likes long hair and is very excited to see it.

I think your best bet is to call around and find someone who LIKES long hair. The last time I had my hair cut (a year ago when I got the horrid layers and terrible hair cut) the woman had been warned that my hair was long, but still sighed and said, exasperated, "It IS long." Make sure the person knows exactly how long it is and that you want hardly any cut off. Try to find a picture of a nice cut like you want it! I'm off to do that, and if I find a good one, I'll post it for you.

I know a great guy in Chicago who just did nice layers in my hair - I'm in love. To find someone in your area, maybe try Yelp? That's how I found this guy - not just looking at how many stars the salon got, but reading the reviews and looking at the userpics (in other words - when the reviewer says she has long/wavy/whatever hair - is it similar to mine?). And then once you're at the salon, go with your gut - this guy likes long hair and even gave me a few pointers to make it healthier, so that put me at ease.

look for asian salons! they are usually very good in adding volume and cutting layers

I'd go and observe salons. For instance I'd go in ask questions about the style or products you like. See if they understand the style or services you're wanting. Take a picture of the style or cut you want make sure as part of the questions you ask is do they know how to cut that style. If its a new modern style make sure they're trained in doing modern cuts. Young modern salon not one that does poodle perms and older hair dos.

I don't really know what to advise you, but I feel your pain.

I've been toying with the idea of a fringe for months but I'm too chicken to cut it myself. And I can't go to a hairdresser cause every time I've been to one for a fringe, they get it wrong :p

Perhaps you could stake out and find a salon with a long haired hairdresser?
