View Full Version : Does anything make YOU feel like a "hair failure"?

So yesterday I tried, yet again, to do a real crown braid.
And failed.
I have lost count of how many times I have tried but for some reason not being able to do this makes me feel like a hair failure.
Is there anything that makes YOU feel like a hair failure?

They started to re run the Little Mermaid Cartoon series, and my son and I watch it. Having Ariel’s hair as my hair goal is completely unrealistic.. Lol I’m not very good at braiding my hair either. I did my 1st successful Dutch Braid this morning, but I was trying to do a French Braid. The biggest failure lately was realizing that sleeping with my hair up for the last 6 months actually did more harm than good. There’s a huge section of breakage in the back now. I should have caught it sooner, but at least now I know.

You get sympathies from me. My hands are extremely uncoordinated, except when I am working on other peoples hair. It took me six months to get a french braid right.
Doesn't make me feel like a failure or anything, but it is extremely frustrating!

Well the fact that I joined LHC about six months ago and Im still struggling with the same awful hair. Most people can put up six month anniversary pics showing their six month hair improvement-but not me! I do have to take into account two really bad salon colors that really made my hair take a giant leap backwards.:(
And the fact that I have no hair talent at all. I can put two regular braids on either side of my head and do a real messy sock bun. Thats it. All these beautiful updos and braids I just cant do. I am going to practice more though!:p
So yes I do feel like a hair failure!

I still can't do a crown braid. I'm trying to master this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw9tgIIkUII&feature=youtube_gdata_player) as it looks a bit easier. Hmmm. Hair failure? Well I think my hair looks bad down. I have a friend who has hip length hair that is so thick and heavy it dosent move. So it looks like it's just been brushed (especially when she flat irons it). My hair gets messy in 10 minutes. So sometimes I wwonder why I grow it all. This especially sucks when I try updos and can't make anything look right.

No, not really. Braiding successfully is a question of tons of patience and practice.
There are some braids that are beyond me (Spiral braid, for instance) because my fingers aren't that nimble.
I just concentrate on what I know and try to make it better.
Also, sometimes you need to "think outside the box" when it comes to braiding.
Because of unused muscles, I find standing erect and holding my arms up for extended period of time hard to do. But I love the lace crown braid because it mimics the double Heidi braids I used to do (see my avatar pic). My hair is too thin now to carry the Heidi braids off well, so I resorted to the lace crown braid.
But, instead of doing it in the conventional way (holding the arms up for most of the braiding) I learned to do it while seated, with all my hair in front of me, and starting from in front of the right ear and working around to the left ear, at which point I changed hands, stood up, and continued lace braiding to the end.
It took me a month and a lot of purple language before I got anything that looked halfway decent...but I kept at it and mastered it.
There are many things to consider when braiding...the tension, the angle, the sectioning. Little by little, your fingers will become more adept, the motions will come easier.

No, not really. The only thing that does make me feel like a failure is that I've never been able to grow it out. This is the longest my hair has been in 4 years and it's only SL! I'm proud that I even try any up do's or braids at this point as they're fiddly...

Yeah, my nasty ENDZZZZZZ! Ugh, I look at other member's hair pics & their hemlines are so thick & blunt, mine is scraggly and ratty :( I know it's because I have a ton of damage, and also due to having around 1/3 of my underlayer ripped out 2 years ago in an attack (that has now reached SL, adding to the taper :() but I'm shooting for CL & trimming off gradually at the same time, so I'll be stuck with the Ends of Doom for years.

I don't know about -failure-, but I also suck at hair styles. I'm finally getting to the point that I can do a normal braid and have it look good enough to wear out. I think I could manage a crown braid with two strands, but something about three strands and adding hair is tooo muuuch for my fingers.

The only (stick) bun I can do is the 'Mrs El Knot', everything else I fail at.
I still can't even roll sockbuns right. My hair turns out crinkly.
Oh, and forget any braiding! My arms & hands feel like they turn to lead when I raise them to my head. I only get a few seconds before I have to let them fall.
Maybe when my health is better I'll be able to bun, until then I'll keep admiring crown braids from afar. :crush:

That is interesting, but my hair would wrap way further around my head than hers...
I cannot change my fingering. I even use two mirrors so I can see the back of my head and I cannot change my fingering without losing which strand is which and ruining the braid. BUT, I can get all the way to my other ear without changing the fingering so I could, perhaps, do hers. It is just the extra hair...
I never had trouble braiding. I pretty much got french braiding right the first tiem I tried.
I have even practice JUST the upsidedown part, tryign to learn the fingering and I cannot do it. My brain just won't change the finger patterns.

No, I don't ever think of myself as a hair failure, though my hair has its days of non- behaving, I'm sure everyone's does. My greatest challenge would be crown braiding as others have said. The thought of braiding upside down AND backwards as well, and having to change hands - well, my mind just plain boggles.
When I learned to French braid some years ago it took me a good 2 solid hours of practice before I managed it! I'm sure that it just takes practice to do a crown braid (sigh) The thought of the difficulty puts me off even trying, to be honest...

I can't even manage to bun my hair.
It's not too short, I just always get confused and it falls back however it pleases to.
I have yet to master the french/fishtail/crown/rope braid. Yeah.
My hairstyle options are down, ponytail, ponybun, simple braid, or half up.
Not a really wide range...
But I'm working on it!

Lillith Moon's tutorial is a great way to "get a feel" for doing a lace braid. Once you master the two strand lace twist crown braid, the 3 strand lace crown braid is easier to understand.

I feel like I'm sabotaging my goal for long hair, but gah! I've actually just posted a thread about this, I feel like if I can find someone with lovely long hair who wears their hair loose, then I'll still have some sort of chance, heh.

I wear my hair loose almost every day (every day except for 3 days a month or less) and I'd like to think it's pretty lovely!
I don't carry a purse and when at school I keep it over one shoulder while I have my backpack on or if I want to lean back against a chair (I usually just sit up straight and let my hair fall down my back - it almost touches chairs, but not quite).
I don't think I look good with my hair up, either. Rarely I will think so, but usually I do not. That's why I want to practice hairstyles, but I SUCK AT HAIR(styling).

Having my lazy bun start pulling...so I drop it out and redo it and it is pulling...repeat 5 or 6 times with the exact same result...OK, two of those fell out immediately plus pulling. Give up and keep walking, try again and it is pulling before the bun is done. Give up again, walk home, hair now all snarled by the wind and fog. Grrrrr!

You are welcome, hairhair!
Please be sure to detangle all your hair gently once you have it in front of you.
Work in small sections like this:
1) take a thin section of hair and divide it in three sections and braid it
2) take a thin section of hair from your LEFT and add it into the strand nearest your LEFT
3) continue adding in until you reach the top of your ear, then stand erect, change hands, and continue adding in hair as you work around your head. Tuck in the tassle when you've finished braiding all the hair.
Special note:
Now you might think that because all the hair is in front of you it all gets braided in front, with nothing left over for the back..but that's not the case, if you take small enough sections as you work around the head. This does take a bit of getting used to.
Just imagine your hair sectioned like a pie chart as you work around your head. Try and visualize the way the hair grows out of your follicles.
In other words...the hair on the back of your crown should be braided in the middle area, while the hair to the sides should be braided on the sides. I know this sounds confusing, but visualization helps a lot.
Lastly, in order to help with the "adding in" technique ("lacing") you might want to check out this video by Lillith Moon on the far easier two strand lace rope twist for shorter hair:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPHEzUr5bWQ
You can do this with all the hair in front of you too. Far easier to accomplish than the 3 strand lace braid...but the technique is the same.
What I loved about the "all the hair in front of you" approach to braiding was that I never had to worry about a part spoling the overall effect.

The fact that the only two hair styles I can do to my hair right now are the cinnabun and the French Twist makes me feel failsauce. My layers make braiding look... less than professional... and I'm too short for the LBW, Infinity Buns, etc. -.-;

When I cannot get other buns to work I do a gibralter. That one never pulls, but then everyone is different and your hair is much longer...equilibrium buns are the most secure but also the most ugly.

Thank you for those bun names! I seriously need to learn some more buns (THAT STAY). My hair is just so fine and slippery. I can do cinnabuns, but the way I have to do them to get them to stay without bobby pins makes them look more like Olive Oil buns, which look hideous. Gahhh! Maybe I'll just start dampening my hair before making any bun.
-----
Yesterday, I spent about 2 hours trying to make the lace 2-strand crown braid. I can get about 3/4 around my head and it looks great, but when I get to the blasted last 1/4 it gets all tangly and I can't finish it off. I ended up shedding like 20 unnecessary hairs yesterday trying to do this. >_< I'd love it if I could just get 1/3 of it to stay as an embellishment for my loose hair, but it slips out when I bobby pin it. Any suggestions on how to get it to stay? I could use an elastic, but I think that would look silly. Those mini claw clips just slide down my hair when I use them, so I don't think that would work either... but maybe if I made the braid big and did it on damp hair it would work.

Aine, have you heard of Ficcares? You can get really small ones that could work. I am glad someone else doesn't have any luck with claw clips.
There are a million (ok, maybe that is an exaggeration) buns. The Lazy Wrap is a great one, infinity is one of my favorites aesthetically as is the gibralter. Something about the way I do the gibralter just looks really nice (IMO)
Here is a Gibralter with a large Ficcare:

I'll have to get some ficcares. I definitely need more hair stuff, as I only have hair sticks and bobby pins. I've tried infinity and lazy wrap buns and they don't stay, either. BUT they might on damp hair or if I get more practice. I just did the gibralter and it does seem to be staying with just one hairstick, though, and it looks rather nice! This may have to be my new go-to bun. :)

Not really. There are things I'm not good at, either because I haven't put in the practice or because my particular hair makes it a hassle (or both). The crown braid is in that category because my hair is a drag to section over and over, and whenever I've tried it it looked so poor (absolutely not going-out-in-public-worthy) that I gave up immediately. It likely would get somewhat easier with practice, but my hair will always be a bit floaty/grabby and not want to section easily. I might try that "almost" crown braid, it seems a bit more in the realm of possibility because at least it doesn't require some of my hair to radically change the direction that it wants to lie, always tough on dry hair for me.
My "hair-grump" at the moment is that when I recently measured after laying off the measuring tape for five trim-free months, I had gained ... one inch. Good thing I like this length! :D

That's not it. I tried to find a video but couldn't. You gather hair in a pony with right hand, make an L with your left hand and point it like a tent over the top of the base of your pony, twist the hair a you go (important: twist hair counter-clockwise) and take the hair over the forefinger, behind the hand (counter clockwise), under the thumb towards the inside, the back up and over the thumb (changing directions to clockwise, gee this is hard to explain in words), then back up over the back and keep twisting and wrapping until you run out of hair. You will have a loop around your thumb and one around your forefinger. Put the stick in through one, then under the bun (make sure to catch the ends between the stick and your head, this helps in ANY bun to keep it from falling loose) and back out through the other loop.
If you manage it from those instructions you are a genius. LOL

Well it depends what one defines as a "hair failure". Failure to be perceptive enough to find a routine and/or have the determination to stick with it (no dying included or heat styling :P) that works for maintaining healthy hair? Failure to learn/perform styles? Failure to stay focused on growing hair by ending up distracted then chopping length off? All of the above?
Well... I don't feel so much like a hair failure. There are things I regret, but I chalk them up to experience and refer back to those so I don't make certain mistakes again. I'm pretty perceptive to consequences and rarely repeat mistakes these days.
As far as hairstyles. I learned how to French braid in less than a minute (physically attempting to perform it). A friend French braided my hair. I examined it for about 2 minutes holding a handheld mirror up to see the back in my wall mirror. Then, after she separated the first 3 strands for me of her hair and told me to take in the sides and just braid like a normal English braid (I learned back in junior high) it suddenly made sense and I started weaving. Before that I had a heck of a time reading and watching tutorials. I know I'm a hands on learner when it comes to hairstyles. It's a matter of finding your learning style. If you can't do something based on agility or muscle strength or if you have arthritis, do what you can and get damn good at it. That's not failure, that's a capacity to compensate and overachieve where someone might not.
As far as growing my hair.. In the past year that I have been a member here, if I'd not taken a single millimetre off my hair since joining I would probably be either at mid back or BSL, and that's a fair estimation based on memory of how much I've chopped and what the numbers each month coming in were. Is my hair healthier because I've cut at it. Possibly... Getting the dye out was probably one of the best decisions I made in regards to taking off hair. The only thing I regret was taking off bits from the sides and layers I still had in an attempt to healthy up ends while not losing length a couple months ago. I was eventually going to give myself a mullet and even worse layering.. like 80s rocker hair... So I stopped.. but I am still working on that. I recently cut off about 2.5 inches bringing me back up effectively to shoulder (I will NEVER go any shorter than that if it's in my power). I was about 2 inches from APL. I don't regret that though. I got rid of a lot of my layers and my sides are almost matched with the back and I'll probably maintain a bit to get hair I want (all layers eliminated) before growing again. My obsession with length is slowly fading, but my desire to eventually have it has not and I look at that as my patience growing right now and therefore I have more freedom to take steps to get the hair I do want. My hair is only about 4 inches longer than when I joined this site now, but I've learned a lot and I've got virgin hair that has not been exposed to sls or cones.
It can only get better from here. Any setbacks I have will be finding a new routine with ageing hair (my hair is getting some silvers in it from my early greying mother) and new lengths and I'm looking forward to those lessons.:D:cheese:

I have two hair failures:
1.) I'm still trying to figure out which shampoo to use since my scalp hair gets oily overnight. You'd think that by age 36, I'd have something as simple as shampoo figured out.
2.) Braiding is a nightmare for me. My arms get tired, my bottom length self braids and I can't figure out how to continue the braid once I pull it over my shoulder to finish it. I know you're supposed to change the direction you started off at, but I always end up with this weird loopy section.
My hair is 39 inches long and I can't even do a simple braid. Pathetic. I don't have the guts to even try a French or lace braid. Noooo way!
Epic Fail.

Buns. I can't do any bun because of the thickness of my hair. Even pinning up a braid doesn't often work because it just falls out in an hour or so. I tried to do various types of buns but the only I managed to do was a kind of a bun that looks a very distant relative of a cinnamon bun :(

Just the fact that it's short! Feels like maybe I shouldn't even be in this site chatting and commenting because my hair is too short. But I do anyways- I find encouragement and motivation here! :-)

I usually fail at French or Dutch braiding. I don't know that I feel like a hair failure about it, though. I am pretty good at making excuses and deflecting feelings of failure, for what that is worth. :D
I get mixed up or distracted and lose track of what I am doing, but here is my excuse: I didn't try to learn when my hair was shorter. I have TB length hair and the length tangles when I am separating sections. Untangling takes my mind and fingers off the job of braiding.

My hair certainly isn't thick, but I also have trouble keeping my braids up. I'll make an english braid, fold it up, and secure it in place with bobby pins, only to have it slip further and further down the back of my head. The only way to help it stay up is to make a french braid rather than an english one. Maybe because the hair sections join the braid horizontally rather than vertically, this seems to give the bobby pins something better to grip, and they aren't able to just slide down my head. The pins are going in at a right angle to the hair, if that makes sense.

Lol!! That just means you need to make a video! I ended up attempting it like 80 times after that initial attempt I made in the morning and I think it ended up looking like 7 different ways, rofl. I guess as long as you get an infinity it works? Haha.

Having dry, fluffy, frizzy or otherwise unkempt ends. My hair doesn't always wear well when down, and when it's not in its best state sometimes I can feel people looking and thinking, "This is why you can't have hair that long!"

I can't do as Dutch braid for the life of me. It makes me feel like a hair failure! I'm great at doing other braids. I don't know why the Dutch braid is so difficult for me...

No, not really. The only thing that does make me feel like a failure is that I've never been able to grow it out. This is the longest my hair has been in 4 years and it's only SL! I'm proud that I even try any up do's or braids at this point as they're fiddly...
GROWING to BSL. Anything past 27 inches would be a miracle for me. I've been hovering between 23 and 26 inches for over 12 months. Mind you I keep cutting off the ends hoping to thicken up the hemline. Now I think because I might have a short terminal and it will never be 27 inches or a thick, healthy hemline.
