View Full Version : Frizz/Experience with Kevin Murphy?

Hello there! Boy, do I have a long story to tell you.

After avoiding hairdressers for over 10 months I caved. My ends were just a mess, so dry beyond repairing. And I tried everything, believe me. It was really time for a chop. It was quite a scary thing to do going to a hairsalon, since my last experience didn't go so well (read: greenblue hair). But I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The reason I chose this particular salon was because their website said that they actually diagnose your hair before doing anything. And while I was there I was very happy to learn that they use sulfate-free and parabenfree shampoos! And I was even happier a day later when I noticed my scalp was completely flake-free, something I haven't been able to achieve with my mild sls-free shampoo. They were trying to sell me stuff, which they didn't succeed in at the spot, but I must say I'm intrigued. So I was wondering if anyone happens to have experience with Kevin Murphy, the brand they were using.

So I wasn't traumatized this time, even though they combed my wet and very tangly hair after washing and then escorted me back to the washing-area and put a pigment-treatment in and rinsed again after ten minutes to only blowdry after that. She did put some morrocan oil in my hair before blowdrying. I just hate blowdrying and I don't understand why she combed my hair between washing and conditioning. But putting that aside, to my surprise I was completely frizz-less. But that didn't last long though, because when I washed my hair, deep conditioned and put oil in it it was downright frizzy again. I really don't understand why this keeps happening. I use a mild shampoo, don't wash my lengths, use a deepconditioning hairmask, oil everyday. But I find myself oiling so much that my hair just looks limp and still is frizzy. I thought a big chop would help and it did a bit, but my ends just feel crispy and the static is driving me crazy. I've tried SMT's, proteïntreatments, but when I do my hair is even frizzier! The more I use the more frizz I get. Clarifying helps my crispy ends, but it seems the frizz is certainly not related to any kind of build-up.
I'm at a loss here, so I would really appreciate some help. Does anyone have any ideas how I could stop this frizz. I never had this much frizz before even though my hair was damaged and dry. It just started about 6 months ago and I have absolutely no lead on why. And I can't understand how it's possible that the hairdresser got rid of the frizz, when all I do is exactly the same as her minus the blowdrying, and she did wash my lengths.

Hi Kayleigh
When you blow dry, all the shorter ends sit straight and you don't really notice them but when you air dry they can stick up everywhere and look frizzy - is this the kind of frizz you've got? I'm struggling with that a bit since I stopped blow-drying. I did a couple of protein treatments that made my hair crunchy and I think it broke quite a bit, so now there are more ends sticking up. Maybe clarify and SMT but keep off the protein? You might want to look up hair wrapping which I can't begin to describe but is a way of wrapping your hair around your head under a scarf so that when you undo it it is straight and silky - have you heard of this? I haven't mastered it yet so I'm no authority!!
Good luck - I'm sure you'll get more suggestions from people who've been here longer. :)

Hi Kayleigh,

I'm not sure what to suggest but I do hope you will find a solution here. Someone will surely have the answer:)

Combing my hair when it is loaded with conditioner helps the poof.

I think your hair looked good after the stylist because they blow-dried your hair, that can happen if they aim the air in the direction that the hair grows, just like straightening iron can make hair frizz-free.

About everything else I think you just need to experiment with more oils, penetrating (EVOO, Coconut, Avocado, Sweet almond, etc) versus coating oils (jojoba, mineral oil, grape-seed, etc), on dry hair versus on wet hair (coating oils work well on wet hair). Maybe even give CO (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=18) a try, or cones. If you haven't tried Kimberlily's defrizz spray (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=277) that could be a good option as well.

I hope you find something that works for you. :)

I think you have a buildup problem. The solution is less oil and conditioner, not more.

I had this phase where I babied my hair with coconut oil and other oil treatments and after a while it looked limp, frizzy and just plain bad. Your hair simply doesn't need so much of all that stuff and oil tends to lock everything out. One wash with regular shampoo over the scalp and entire length solved it for me.

What I found is this: I still wash my scalp mostly and treat my length with a conditioner. Just once a week/1,5 weeks, I wash my entire length as well, to prevent buildup. And then I continue on my regular routine. This helps keep my hair in good shape. When I found it gets too dry and frizzy, I just wash it extra.

I'm currently using the Lush Shine sulfate free shampoo bar for my "complete shampoo days" and it really makes my hair shiny and manageable. I don't add conditioner either on those days as the previous treatments suffice on their own.

Honestly, try it. Wash all of your hair and don't add oil or conditioner. If you're not satisfied with it afterwards, you can always add leave in conditioner or a spray. Also, damp bunning helps a lot with frizz. Towel dry your hair, run your fingers through it to detangle and put it up. It'll take longer to dry but it helps a lot.

Chestnutta That might explain some of the frizz. I have lots of new hair growing since I solved my iron deficiency. But that's mostly on top of my head, it seems that the lower frizz is more poofy (I hope that makes sense :p). That hair wrapping sounds interesting, I'm gonna look that up.

Maverick494 I am certain it's not a build up problem. As I explained in my post clarifying does nothing for my frizz, only the crunchy ends. What I forget to mention though is that I tried going with only shampooing and nothing more for over a month and it didn't help either. I clarify about once a week. But I am very happy to hear that you were able to solve your frizzproblem and thank you for the kind advice. And I think I might try bunning it the next time while drying to see if that helps.

I use morracan oil on my frizzy ends. You can try that or try the maroccan oil shampoo and conditioners.

I've tried something different yesterday and I must say it does help a bit. I avoided squeezing my hair dry and just slid down the towel over my ends. Then I tried to bun it, but it really takes forever to dry. So I put it up with a clip instead and let it hang loose as soon as my ends were dry. There is less frizz, it's not gone but it's definitely a win. I guess sometimes it's the little things that make a huge difference. Still hoping to tame the rest of my frizz though.
Next time I'll go to the same hairdresser to get my bangs done I'll ask for how much they sell the moroccan oil. I normally oil it with jojoba oil and it used to work wonders, but lately not so much.
