I am in complete shock. My hair is twelve brands of awesome today. I have NEVER seen it like this! I can't help but keep taking photos - so don't worry I'll post them when I get home.

The shine is BLINDING. There is NO FRIZZ. It is so incredibly SOFT and SWOOSHY. The curls are so HAPPY!

I came to this trying to recover my hair from protein overload last month - velcro ends. My hair doesn't like the SMT because of the aloe, so here's what I came up with instead - I've been calling it the Curl Flood Moisture Treatment :stirpot:.

1 part protein free moisturizing conditioner - I used Suave Lavender & Lilac.
1 part pure Vegetable Glycerine.
1 part (kneaded, softened, not melted) Coconut oil.
Wet hair.

The mixture should be the consistency of pudding. Smooth through wet hair and gently massage into length for a few minutes. Clip up and leave in for 1 hour. Rinse out and CO wash with same protein free conditioner. Style as usual.

I seriously cannot wait to post pics! I really hope this helps other curlies (or wavies or straighties) who are in need of deep moisture, but are sensitive to aloe.

ETA: PICTURES!

Now, these can appear a bit deceiving because my hair is SO shiny. I just want to be clear that my hair is NOT wet & NOT oiled in these pictures. It is completely dry with only a bit of coconut oil on the very ends.

Well I knew I needed a deep moisturizing treatment - so I sort of dissected the SMT (which is two humectants and a conditioner). My hair reacts horribly to both aloe and honey - so I looked for different humectants to try and vegetable glycerine came up. Then I figured coconut oil always moisturizes my hair well so I'll throw that in too.

I can't believe it worked so incredibly well! I'll be doing this treatment quite often I think!

I heard at grocery stores...?

You can also check your local health food/nutrition store. I will probably order mine online; the NOW brand.

I am now laying around in my bathrobe, with this treatment on my hair and a plastic baggy over it. I will report on the results once I rinse it out in an hour or two.
Here's what I did:

I used vegetable glycerin from mountain rose herbs (http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/bulkmisc/bulkmisc.html).
I used extra virgin coconut oil, and VO5 vanilla mint conditioner (http://www.amazon.com/Alberto-VO5-Therapy-Vanilla-Conditioner/dp/B001KY9W1I).
First I mixed the conditioner and the coconut oil. I used 2 TBS of each. They smelled fantastic together.
Next I added 2 TBS of glycerin. The texture was like a thin pudding, or a thick cake batter.
Then I decided to microwave the concoction to heat it up and make it absorb better. I microwaved it for 20 seconds, and it turned clear and watery. The coconut oil had separated, and was floating on top.
So I put it in my magic bullet blender and blended for 30 seconds, until it had turned milky white and was a bit thicker.
After clarifying my hair with VO5 kiwi lime clarifying shampoo, I squeezed out the extra water in my hair, and poured the treatment over it. The treatment was very runny and messy, and dripping everywhere. I damp bunned my hair, and covered it with a plastic bag.
In an hour or so, I will wash it out with more conditioner. I hope I get great results and shiny hair like the OP.

I would try this treatment again, but without the coconut oil, or much less of it.

I was reading reviews of Africare glycerin http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/africare-100-glycerin/ID=prod4118523-product#BVRRWidgetID and they were saying to only use a very small amount or hair would get icky.... but I think that was as a leave-in. But are you sure it's the coconut oil, or could it just as easily be the glycerin leaving you greasy? I'm looking forward to trying it, but guess each person might have to mess with the ratio...

I think it's the coconut oil, because glycerin is not oil-based, it has a texture sort of like honey or maple syrup. I will report back when I've tried it with glycerin and no oil.

Now that I've washed the oil out of my hair, this treatment did leave my hair feeling very soft, and it is shinier than usual. I will definitely try it again, maybe with honey instead of coconut oil.

I can' find vegetable glycerin anywhere around me, which means I'm gonna have to look on Amazon. Even if I find it at a decent price...I'm still going to have to wait about a week to try this.

Did! Both health stores, hobby lobby and walmart. I just don't think there's demand for it here, and so they aren't stocking it.

I didn't find glycerin suppositories at CVS. :D But I realized, based on volume alone, it wasn't worth it. Go LHC!

Do you put this one before the shower like a hair mask (Deep Condish?)

Yup, thats exactly what I did.
That morning I wet my hair up to my ears in the sink, slapped the stuff on, massaged it in a bit, clipped it up & fiddled around on here for an hour. Then rinsed & CO washed in the shower.

so only put it on the length? or entire head?

Well, I didn't really need a moisture blast much higher than ear level - but I'm sure it's fine if you slather your whole head. :) Nothing bad will happen to your scalp - these are all food-grade ingredients. Well, save for the conditioner.

I do strongly recommend a CO wash after to get the coconut oil out though.

I tried this yesterday, as described in PinkyCat's OP. My parts were 3tbs each and this was just enough to cover my wet (but not dripping) hair. My conditioner was Tressemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture.

Sadly, there was no change in shine or curl factor. Great sadness.

My two caveats are:
1. My hair has very little natural shine, even when virgin and perfectly healthy. Individual strands may shine, but the net affect is never shiny (I suspect because my curls break up any minor shimmer I may get). I didn't this treatment mainly as a potential way to boost my sparkles into outright shine.

2. I admit that I'm obsessed with moisture, as it's the only thing that tames my curls. I co-wash every night, and then put in a rich leave-in conditioner as well as seal with oil. So if this treatment works by providing the hair with a blast of moisture when it's deficient, maybe I'm not an ideal candidate for it.

Overall, my hair liked this treatment MUCH more than it did an SMT, so I'm likely to try it again if I overuse protein or have a situation where I want to try for quick moisture correction. I'll try to update here to see if I get different results in those situations.

Just wanted to leave feedback, because I love when people post new techniques. Thank you PinkyCat!
