View Full Version : The Official Bun Waves Thread!

Hello fellow LHCers! :D

I have searched the forum, and have not found an official bun waves thread! I found a heatless curls thread, bun picture thread, braid thread, but no bun waves thread!

Bun waves can be made with cinnabuns, messy buns, nautilus buns, beebutt buns, etc. and I think it would be so convenient to hear about all of your guys' different techniques on how to get the perfect bun waves. Feel free to include photos, videos, etc.!

I personally have been looking for a technique to make beachy, messy bun waves. I have not found a successful one yet! Anyone got a good technique for that?

Here is my contribution to the thread:

After my hair was 97-98% dry, I took my hair and cinna-bunned it with a big, soft scrunchie, making sure to not fold the ends at the end. I then slept in it, and then kept a cinnabun all day the next day with a hair stick. The results? Smooth, straighter hair with a big-bodied wave. (And this is when PhotoBucket decides to poop out on me and not upload my pictures.. PICS TO COME SOON FOLKS!)

So, anybody care to join? :cheese:

Aww--I had awesome bun waves the other day. No pics. It's nice to have stretched-out waves sometimes instead of my usual curls; my hair feels longer. I like to do two cinnamon buns so that the waves on both sides of my head curl toward the back. I do a "regular" one in the left (because I tend to twist right) and a "backward" one on the right side. If I want a single bun, I pull one through the middle of the other and pin with a stick, so that the coils stay the same direction I put them.

my friend, i find her weird for saying this, but she doesnt like bun curls or waves. mainly becuase its like its flat all around your head and then suddenly there's waves. to her it looks "unnatural" but im like, if your hair is really long, usually its weighed down so the "natural" look IS exactly what bun waves usually look like. i agree its kinda funny to see, but theyre not bad. maybe you could section the hair and make tiny buns all around the head!
has anyone experimented with that?? i might do it actually! :D now that i mention it! cool stuff! theyd be smaller waves i think, but that would be a nice effect too.

and also, does anyone like their waves from braiding it and then bunning it? mine doesnt look too great when i do it, i dont like it. XD looks weird to me.

If your friend dislikes the look of having flat scalp hair, tell her to bun loosly on the first twist nearest to the scalp, this leaves all the scalp hair in a sort of pillowy affect that results in much more volume at the top before the waves start. I always bun for waves like this, my hair doesn't really like to go tight, it comes loose lol.:)

I get superb bun waves from my go-to style of the moment: the figure eight bun. If I do it while my hair is still damp and leave it in all day, I feel like it's Chriastmas when I let my hair down. Fun!

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8899&pictureid=116358

I had washed my hair the night before then put it up in a cinnabun in the morning and left it in all day. When I took my bun out for bed, that was the result! I so wish I had taken it out earlier in the day so I could've enjoyed the waves! My hair was totally flat the next morning, of course, haha.

I've never quite been able to replicate the waves. I tried a few times then gave up. I think the key (for me) is to cinnabun newly washed (but completely dry) hair. Maybe I'll try again...

Wow Flying Penguin your bun waves look beautiful!

This is an old picture (it's longer now hooray!) but these are bun waves on me. I like them because it makes my hair look straighter but with movement still :)

I need to work out how to get the ends to go under instead of being so enthusiastically flippy though, never manage to beat that tendency out of it :o

My hair doesn't like bun waves that much, haha.
I might try something tonight though. I'll do a bunch of beebut buns near the nape of my neck (maybe six) and then sleep on it, and see how it goes =D

hmm that's interesting, when i oil my hair and bun it, i do have curls like bun curls but not as intense as when i used my conditioner as leave in. Ill have to give it a wurl again with only conditioner and damp bun it. i got serious curls that left me at apl but my friend seemed to love it XD i was confused why loved it, they were just curls to me, but i might do it sometime again and post piccys here! dont know if they looked that great but we'll see.

hmm but i dont know cuz theyre curls, not waves :p maybe im posting in the wrong thread. XD

Hmm, I have never really been in to this stuff, but maybe I should try it some time... Whenever my hair is in a bun, it becomes a bit straighter than usual, looking a little longer.

But do you guys think it would be damaging to do it too often, like every 3 days?

Beautiful!! Especially the first one!

Okay, this is interesting. I love how big my hair is after I take down my trusted cinnabun, but I never really think the waves look too nice. I washed my hair today and it's slightly damp still, so I'll hurry up and make a bun on the top of my head and show you all tomorrow ;)

Okay, I love bun waves. Bun waves are a newly found thing for me now that I am growing my hair. I used to wear it in a bun when I was very little as I see with pictures, it looks good on my face (a high bun baking in the kitchen etc.)
Here is my cinnabun? It is the only bun I know how to do and I wear it all of the time. Flexi-8 in this picture but I haven't been able to make a flexi work with it again I need a new size.

http://i45.tinypic.com/2hn5bfa.jpg

Yesterday I had nice bun waves when I took my hair down after sleeping so I took a picture.
http://i48.tinypic.com/21b80oi.jpg
I love bun waves I can't wait to try a sock bun but I don't know how to even start or if I have enough hair. I won't be able to do it the way most people do, I don't have enough hair... I may have to make a custom sock... what worries me is I don't think I have enough hair to shield a piece of cloth.

here are my cinnamon bun curls! i always get these, not in waves. my hair just curls up :p it really eats up my length though, more than my actual CURLS DO! :D its frizzy but this is my dry hair bun, if i had damp bunned it, it woulda been neater and curlier actually. :p
i havent tried section bunning and i wanna try it to see how different the curls are! probably smaller! :D ill try it and post some pictures later!
i do prefer though that the curl went up higher but maybe by sectioning it all it would turn out that way. :)

I agree with you, that look DOES look natural. And I get awful waves when I braid then bun, it's all flippy in the wrong sense of the word.

That's what my bun waves usually come out as! It's so frustrating.

So pretty! And same, I noticed I have to do it on freshly washed hair, that is completely dry, or like 98% dry, or else I get those awful spirally dreads.

But this is exactly why I like bunwaves! If I let my hair dry when it's loose I get too much volume ( and frizz) through the crown.

Whuhuu, my hair is finally long enough to get some decent bun waves! :cheese: however, they don't seem to stay in my hair for very long. I usually wet my hair a little bit, and let it sit in a bun and dry (maybe 3-4 hours - the hair is completely dry, because it was far from soaking wet). But they never last more than an hour, tops.

How do I make them stay? Should I spray with hairspray before I let it down? Could I put in some mousse before I bun it? There must be a healthy way to do it.
