Hey guys!

(Better pics here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=100661&page=2):) (post #17))

So, I chelated for the first time. Super exciting. I was so amazed with the results. It's not as obvious in pictures, but it was glaringly obvious to me, IRL.

For those who don't know, chelation removes hard water mineral deposits that crust around the cuticle of the hair. Chelating and clarifying are not the same thing, although some chelating shampoos clarify.

I will probably chelating once every 3-6 months from now on, I'll see how I feel :)

First off, this is the chelating shampoo I got. I bought it off of Amazon for under £10. I like that it's sulfate free. It's also clarifying, although I didn't buy it for that purpose;

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/283071_4626733426760_1714295917_n.jpg

This was my hair before chelating. Bare in mind, this was third-day-worked-through-two-busy-shifts hair, so it wasn't looking its best for close-ups;

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/251050_4627461724967_1216546945_n.jpg

Due to the clarifying and stripping effect of the shampoo, I done an ACV rinse then deep conditioned my hair after shampooing. This is my hair straight after washing it all out. The difference was obvious to me, even with wet hair;

http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/223934_4627693930772_1827600865_n.jpg

I was so amazed with my hair that I rushed outside when it was almost dry and was pawing it like a dog. Due to this, it got messed up and the curls de-clumped. I have now co-washed my hair again, so am waiting for it to dry. So I'll have more pics to add soon, when it's dry. Anyhoo, here are the pics I did snap.

My hair after chelation;

Pre and post chelation;

That's all I have for now :) but when my hair is fully dry, I will be taking some more and posting them.

Chelation is, hands down, one of the best things I have ever done for my hair :)

The best thing about the chelation is it really enhanced my natural shine, natural highlights and previous henna use. I could see a subtle demarcation line between my virgin roots and the old henna on my ends. Not only this, but my hair almost looked light brown in the sunlight! I guess it really lifted the mineral deposits, huh?

That's an impressive difference! Your curls look beautiful.

Potentially stupid question: how do you know if you have hard water and would need to do something like this?

Thank you! I am really, really pleased. I love my hair colour now :cheese:

No stupid questions around here :p

You can check online. Are you in the UK or elsewhere?

You can also know by the way the water acts;

Does it leave scum/limescale on your taps/sink/bath/shower curtain?

Does your skin/hair feel dry after using the water?

Does your soap not lather very well?

Does your water feel like it never really gets your hair/skin clean enough? (soft water indication)

Thank you! According to the map, I'm in a soft water area. Our water doesn't give me that can't-get-clean feeling, though. My parents have very soft water, so I'm familiar with the feeling. I guess our water is probably just about right.

Your hair is sooo amazing. You have to have the most amazing curls I've ever seen. I live in a very hard water area of the US. My scalp suffers the most from it. I HAVE to use citric acid (or lemon or vinegar) every time I wash. I think I'll look for that shampoo you pictured and try it! How often should I use it if I have very hard water?

Salisem, thanks for the map. I might have found the reason why my hair doesn't behave :( ... I leave in a green areashudder:... So, I will need to try chelating and report on the results.

Thanks to both of you for this piece of advise...

What is the difference between clarifying and this :/ ? I clarify once i a while with kevin murphy maxi wash..

Clarifying = removes product/sebum/dirt build up that can't be removed with ordinary washing. Also strips hair's natural oils, so should follow up with a moisturising treatment.

Chelation = removes hard water mineral deposits that crust around the cuticle of the hair. Chelating won't remove product buildup, but some chelating shampoos also clarify.

Hope this helps :-)

Oh wow your hair looks amazing afterwards can your hair get any shiner :D

Thank you! I hope it can ;-)

I'm sorry about your hard water troubles. I guess I never really had any real problems with the hard water and my hair, but chelating definitely done my hair good.

I am not exactly sure, seeing as chelating is new to me, but I would suggest starting out with twice a year, or just whenever you feel your hair needs it again :)

So shiny and sleek while curly at the same time. Surely quantum physics was involved. Wish we could trade hair for a day, I'd love having soft squishy curls for a minute. Then I'd have to give it back to you to take care of, I'd be out of my league.

Your hair is..... GORGEOUS!!! It reminds my of my husbands hair, only his curls are a bit tighter, but it has that same shine. It is obvious that you take excellent care of your hair, and I agree with the other posters, that one pic is magazine worthy! I vote that it should be your avatar! Who's with me?

BTW, I just tried chelating my own hair using lemon juice and W-O-Wwwwww! It made a world of difference! It's so shiny and pliable now!!! I wish I had found out about this sooner!

I live in an extremely hard water area, so how often do y'all think I should chelate? What are your chelating schedules?

Yes it was me posting pic of my hub :D and I will tell him you said that, he loves compliments like that hehehe!

I don't think you look silly in that pic at all. Really. It's captivating and beautiful!

Also, what conditioner do you use? I use Aussie Moist and it seems to be working for me. But now that my hair is totally dry after my chelating wash last night, it feels a bit dry on the ends. I put a little extra conditioner on the ends of my hair before I went to bed, but today it seems that I have the dreaded velcro ends a bit. I'm wondering if I washed out all the lemon juice? I guess it dried it out a little and I just need to do a couple COwashes? But it's definitely something I can live with, regardless. My hair still feels amazing and is so much shinier.

Yay :)

And thank you!

As for conditioner, any really. As long as it doesn't make my hair feel dry.

Just keep co-washing. And deep condition after. I didn't use lemon juice, so not too sure how to deal with dryness from that, but I deep conditioned after the chelating just to make sure :)
