View Full Version : A few questions about oil/protien and cones

Hey gals! My hair has been looking great since I've gotten all the wonderful tips from you all.

I just have a few questions:

1. I did a protien treatment from VO5---didn't really know what it was. Left my hair very flat, so I left it dirty for three days, then did a hot oil treatment and a good wash/condition with John Frieda's brilliant brunette. My hair is full of body and SHINES! How is that? What does protien do vs oil?

2. I've been using John Frieda's Brilliant Brunette natural shine series, and the conditioner has NO cones in it and my hair looks great--when I went back to Pantene, it was frizzy/dry--it could have been due to the protien treatment as well--but I'm confused. My hair loved the cones, so perhaps this was from excess protein?

3. A cool rinse has been making my scalp less itchy and also makes it rinse clean--does this help with shine?

Thanks gals! :) (ooops! And guys!):cheese:

I've often heard that rinsing with cool water does indeed add shine, the reason being that it seals the hair cuticle again - the scales of the cuticle lay flat and therefore reflect more light.

As for protein, I think I'm correct in saying that it sort of "rebuilds" the hair shaft by filling in the gaps in the strand... sort of! Protein is very good for damaged hair. Oil helps to seal in moisture but does not moisturise - moisture is what moisturises your hair :D Oils tend to add softness, but I think that's because of the moisture it seals into the hair.

If I've got any of that wrong I hope someone will point it out! There's a very good thread on here somewhere all about protein.
