View Full Version : The half-up thread

The half-up, as favoured by Elves, Vikings and various other warriors and fantasy characters. I don't believe I've seen a thread wholly devoted to them before so if there is one please excuse me.

I never really wore half-ups until quite recently but started doing them as a way to keep my hair out of my face but still enjoy the length and I've decided they rather suit me so now I want more half-up ideas and pictures if you have them!

I'll start off with this one I did yesterday, just a simple rope-braided one on top of brushed out braid waves :)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/75358436/Half-up%20rope%20braid.JPG

I find the most difficult thing about doing them well is getting the tension right as they often come out looking a bit too tight or too loose. Any tips for this?

Ooh beautiful!

The only half up picture I have already taken is this one. It was just messily put back. I was showing off a new toy at the time. I like the way the texture looks here.

I'll join, but I don't have pictures yet. I don't see a point in having long hair if no one ever sees it. I like braids and buns occsionally, but I usually wear it down, and now that it's longer than BSL, half-ups look better. (Why don't I like half-ups at shorter lengths?)

This is a great idea and I agree with asking how it can be that nobody started a thread for this before, so I'm glad you did. :)

I'll be sure to use this as inspiration to some of my half-ups and while I don't have any pictures of new ones, I'll just post something from my album. This is just two small lace braids braided straight down and pinned up, decorated with a leaf clip and a necklace which I thought might suit the style.

I love half-ups! They're my favourite way to wear my hair down, especially with braidwaves. :) Here's one from July, with an XS Flexi-8:

I really need to be more creative though, I love your rope braided one Becky. :) It reminds me of one of Kate Winslet's beautiful styles from Finding Neverland - here's a still (http://i.imgur.com/GAqK5.jpg). I can never get it to look so lovely (but I suppose having stylists adjust it between every take helps a lot ;) ).

I really love half-ups, but since I stopped using 'cones and hairspray I have had so much problems with the back of my hair frizzing, that I pretty much gave them up. Any tipes for that?
I have tried oiling, and doing it on "not newly washed hair"...

Using a leave-in with oil on wash day helps me. It's not shiny, but at least it's not frizzy.

Good idea thanks, i just took a look at another LHC'ers blog were she french/dutch braids her half but only half way down like this. I really like it thats how i'm wearing it tomorrow.

I also tried dutch braiding it, i like it but i made the half up to fat so it makes my hair look to thin.

Thank you! *blush* I don't wear it down often but when it came out of its sleep bun that morning the waves were so nice I had to leave them down but the half up was necessary to keep it out of my face. Melusine, I've found that if I take a tiny amount of hair from the front sides it doesn't reduce the amount in back so much. I have the same straggly self consciousness!

I already posted this to the braid picture thread but since Becky reminded me of the existence of this thread, I'll post it here too.

Here's my half-up from the other day. It's great for days when you're not really looking freshly washed anymore but still want to wear some of your hair down. The details take people's eyes off the greasiness (I hope). And it's real easy to do too, just 2 small french braids on the top of the head and the braid ends pinned into a circle thingie. I put a decorative clip in the middle to hide the fact that there is no hair in the center of the circle. :)

I often do a mini-bun with a hair stick through it like someone else posted above. Or I take a hank from the top, make a loop up and the rest of it hanging down, and hold it with a small butterfly clip. I think I wear my half-ups higher on the crown of my head than most of you seem to.

http://s20.postimage.org/66sqk576l/025.jpg http://s20.postimage.org/6v1l335wd/026.jpg

I haven't done many of them, but I think my hair may be very well suited to half-ups... my under-layers are a little wavier than my canopy hair, so half-ups show that off! Plus, I have this cowlick to the left of the crown of my head, and parting along that for a half-up makes the hair actually go in the direction it's trying to go.

I'm not a fan of half ups because it makes my hair look very thin.

If it truly divided my hair and put half of it up and left half of it down it would also look very thin. But there are lots of "half ups" that can be done with very small amounts of hair that make a lovely accent to wearing hair down and help keep it out of the face.

Thank you (and to everyone else as well)! The way I did the crown cascade was to part my hair horizontally across the back of my head, clip the bottom part out of the way, and then I just did a partless crown braid on the top half (instructions for that here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=78600)). Thank you both, it's a very easy style to do, but looks good ;)

Here are a couple of simple half-ups, done just to show off my first ever flexi-8s which arrived today. They only took 1 week to get from the US to the UK - now I know that fact it may not be good for my bank balance!

This is a simple English braided one, the flexi is the festive poinsettia, extra small
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2981&d=1362423473

and a close-up
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2982&d=1362423476

All I did here was take two very thin sections of hair, twist them a little and pin them back. The flexi is the Roman Cross in antique brass, mini sized:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2983&d=1362423478

and a close-up

I've decided right here and now, I LOVE flexi-8s!!!

I love half-ups. I really need to get better at this. You'd think something as simple as pinning two sections of hair back would be easy, but god, I'm definitely doing something wrong. All my half-ups come out badly. This is good motivation to practice!

Thanks Allycat, I'll quote the post:

http://i.imgur.com/6Xra7eU.jpg
Gather the hair into a ponytail (though, you don't need a ponytail holder)
http://i.imgur.com/fBDK25L.jpg
Twist the hair, making a hole in the center with your fingers (hopefully the picture helps with this one)
http://i.imgur.com/kA0zECW.jpg
Bring the ends of the hair through the center part
http://i.imgur.com/fCZX1ZH.jpg
After pulling hair completely through, secure with a pin or whatever you'd like. I didn't have one on hand, so my thumb was aiding me in holding it up. Alternately, you could let it just hang loose, though it will look slighty different.

Also, it's just like a regular knot, but it looks slightly sort of different depending on how you twist the hair. For example (essentially the same instructions):
http://i.imgur.com/vwTPHlr.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/Z9yv8ME.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/uVOkB2x.jpg

Spirals, I really like your hair in your profile pic. Is it two braided buns with sticks through them both? It's one braid braided into another. I know I've posted instructions somewhere; can't find them. So I'll try to recap:
1. Divide hair in half vertically, making the right side bigger (part about an inch to the left).
2. Braid the right half, starting close to the ear. Don't tie it off.
3. Bring the braid over to the left ear and make a braid on that side, using the original right braid as one of the strands.
4. Pull it over to the far right side and tuck in the ends behind the whole thing, and pin or use sticks to secure. The reason my avatar looks like two buns is because I looped it up (made a little arch, really) before bringing over to the right, and looped it before tucking in. I thought it looked cute that way.

For a half-up I do pretty much the same with the top half of my hair, but I sometimes bring the left braid just to the middle and put it behind and let the ends hang down, and sometimes I tuck it in. It holds better if I don't let the ends hang, though.

spirals

Oh, and if I'm using a stick horizontally, I like to put in a matching one so I have decorative ends on both sides. But it will hold with one stick.

Beautiful half-ups, guys! :D
Does anybody know how to do a half-up that's made with 2 English braids (on left and right side) merging into one English braid? I know how to merge 3 braids into one, but have no clue how to do it with 2 braids.

TrapperCreekD
May 12th, 2014, 05:54 PM
If I'm understanding you correctly, maybe rope braid them together? My hair's up in a braided bun atm so I can't take it down and see if that would actually work.

neko_kawaii
May 12th, 2014, 05:54 PM
I've done it where the two braids come together and each section joins its twin from the other side and they all continue as one English braid. I found it very tricky to do without having their join look wonky. If I were to do it again, I think I would braid each to their end and then join them as a rope braid.

It should be easy enough when you're actually looking at it, but to do something like this on the back of your head is another thing entirely. You need to untangle the bottom parts of both braids, then again take 3 strands from the gathered ends.

Thank you so very much, guys! :flower:
I'm ashamed to admit, I can't rope-braid.
I was thinking maybe just joining 2 tassels + some random hair strand from right behind the "juncture" could work?
And since 2 braids create 6 small strands, then at the juncture, they can be rearranged into 3 new strands (of the new 3rd braid), made out of 2 strands each... but that would be super-tricky to do and probably wonky-looking.

And since 2 braids create 6 small strands, then at the juncture, they can be rearranged into 3 new strands (of the new 3rd braid), made out of 2 strands each... but that would be super-tricky to do and probably wonky-looking.

Yes, that is how I would do it.

I have been doing more half ups, seems to be a nice compromise. Loving the pics here, thought I would contribute as well. I also posted this in the Ead thread, so apologies if you've already seen this.

[QUOTEI can't wait till I have hair long enough to wear hair toys, they are so beautiful![/QUOTE] Hello Eastbound&Down. I don't know that your length is, mine is barely touching shoulders. I use the mini flexi-8 to keep my bangs up and out of the way as they grow. I guess that would be considered a half-up:)

I can't go for very long with my hair fully down so half-ups are the way to go, I usually just comb the front section back and clip with sleepies near my crown, or if I'm feeling fancy I'll do a GoT Ygritte braid do. I've been watching Silvousplaits' GoT hair tutorials on youtube and have attempted trickier do's but my braiding skills are lacking, cant do french braids properly yet, either I try to do them quick and they are a complete lumpy mess with loose bits everywhere, or I take my time and my arms die halfway through and I need to let go.

Strategic bobby pinning. Take a section from the right and pin it on the back left of your head. Then take a section from the left and pin it on the back right making sure you cover the first bobby pin. Continue with as many sections as you want. Smaller sections make a more dramatic look. You can also poof and pin the hair on top before starting if you like that kind of look. :) Clear as mud?

Thank you, Madora!

What a beautiful painting, Jennwith4! It sort of looks like a combo of fantasy and Pre-Raphaelite ideas. Speaking of Pre-R's, that picture of your hair in the lower right corner looks like it could have stepped out of P-R painting itself! Very, very lovely!

Beautiful, inspiring pics, everyone! I love half-ups (especially with wispy tendrils around the face/ears on me), and how they can look so whimsically pretty. It's one of my fave ways to wear my hair, as it allows me to get the majority of hair out of my face, but enjoy the length and waves against my back. And I'm also enjoying how my whites swirl with my tawnies.

Here are some of the pics I've shared of my half-ups on LHC so far (sorry, they're cropped as they were for hairtoy threads):

Today I wore a half-up nautilus bun for a lil bit! I let the ends stick out cause I like the color contrast they give.
