So, I got it into my head to try this style yesterday. I used instructions that I vaguely remembered Madora giving to another member a while ago, she made it sound so simple that I had to try it! (Thanks Madora :)) It held securely all day & was very comfortable. The flower clip on top was to hide some scruffy bumps, I didn't want to re-do it all!

My style arsenal is growing!! :D I might try it again today, but with rope braids (something else I just learned how to do recently :))

That came out beautiful, I can't believe it's your first try. My first attempts at anything come out looking like a messy pile of hair. Your color is so cool, too.

Were the two braids next to or on top of each other? Thanks for posting a pic, I'm inspired to give it a try now. :)

Thank you! :) It was two braids on top of each other. I am pretty stylistically challenged, but Madora's instructions were so simple that I did it from memory. Thank you for the colour compliment too :) It's mainly Directions dark tulip, with some plum & henna in there too lol Definately try this bun, so simple & held all day. I just got myself some proper U shaped, long hair pins, sooo much better than kirby grips for this sort of thing, I will be putting them to good use & trying some more styles soon :)

Do you think spin pins or a hairstick or two would hold it?

Seriously, those colors are to die (dye?) for!

Which one do you cinnabun first, the top or the bottom braid? It's so pretty, it looks like it took forever to do. The flower is a great accent to it. I'd never know it was hiding bumps

I have no experience with spin pins, they look as though my hair would eat them, but I reckon judicious use of a hairstick or two would hold it. I bunned the top braid first, for some reason every time I separate my hair from ear to ear the top section is bigger, so I figured the bigger braid should go in the middle or it would look funny.
I am beggining to realise now that a lot of complex looking updos are really not so hard, they just look it! Before I would just see them & think 'There is no WAY I could ever do that' & not even try! Also I think when looking for tutorials reading a few from different authors on the same style helps, some people have more of a way with words than others! :)
Make sure you add a pic of yours :D

E2A that flower is great for hiding a multitude of sins lol

And one with rope braids on myself. I think I prefer mine with the rope braids :)

I saw her instructions and did one too!
It's so easy and looks so intricate. I really like the look with a rope braid I will have to give that a go, and with some accent braids it would look really awesome!
Here was my first attempt at the double braided bun..

Sorry the pic is so large. I resized it in photoshop but it doesn't seem to have made a difference  Also the bun is wonky to the right. Ooops! :p

That looks lovely Arakazi :) Accent braids are a great idea too, Ella wants me do one of these buns for her tomorrow for her first day back at school, I might put some accent braids in for her too :)

E2A lol my buns usually end up being to the right, I still have limited mobility in that arm though from a neck injury so that's my excuse!!

September 5th, 2012, 04:19 AM
Also, as Ella's hair is only around BSL I found it was easier to spiral the braids around each other, I hope that makes sense? Start the top one spiralling to the left & the bottom one to the right simultaneously, so they wrap around each other :)

Yeah spiralling sounds good I will have to give that a go :D

That's a good excuse though! :p Mine is just from finding updo's a wee bit awkward to do and it wasn't until I had finally got it up that I realised it was off centre and though it was too pretty to start again.

Sidenote: Your hair colour is just gorgeous!! :D

Thank you for the colour compliments ladies :blossom:
Henrietta, it wasn't so much a tutorial as a post advising another member of easy buns.
Ha, found it, so have copied & pasted Madora's instructions here:

How to bun:

1) Detangle all hair
2) Make a horizontal part from the top of the left ear around the back of the head to the top of the right ear
3) Take all the hair above the part, comb it out gently, then loosely braid it. Secure with hair friendly elastic band.
4) Coil the braid in a bun, securing with hairpins (not bobby pins) at the 4 directions (north/south/east/west). Tuck tassle under bun.
5) Take all the hair below the part, comb it out gently, braid it loosely.
6) Take braid and wind it around the bun already made. Tuck in tassle. Pin securely with crimped hairpins.

Voila: double braided bun.

She makes it so simple! HTH :)

That's more or less what I expected. I just didn't know how to begin, from loose hair or a ponytail. Yaay! Now I know :)

Ladies, I'm so pleased to read that the sectioned double braided bun worked for you! And the rope braid variation was so beautiful!

You'll find that using the sectioned technique allows you many opportunities to experiment with braids of all kinds.

Lol, it's all down to you Madora! Yes, the sectioning really does help, I'm already thinking of new dos! I don't know if this already has a name, but I was thinking of 3 braided sections pinned into a triskele shape, hmmm, maybe tomorrow :)

When I do this I cinnabun the top braid first, and secure with mini spin pins, them use bobby pins to secure the second one around.

I'm another who learned this style from Madora, so many thanks to her for her great instructions! :flower: It's such a pretty style, and there's so many ways you can do it! :D

ETA: Sarelis, yours are lovely! I'm also a big fan of the double rope braid bun.

Lovely, Sarahlabyrinth! That's the great thing about sectioning..it is easy but the result can look so intricate and difficult.

Yaaay! I never thought about using my small spin pins, I bought them a couple months ago and I haven't used them once. Thank you, RapunzelKat! Your hair is thud worthy.

Ok so you inspired me to give this a try so I'll share my first attempt, it's pretty messy as i literally just threw up up like this before bed to try it out, also my scalp hair is still kinda damp so looks really dark, but overall I'm happy with the result. I used a single hairstick, no pins or elastics.

Thank you Madora :) I was very pleasantly surprised when I finished and looked at it in the mirror, I didn't think my puny hair would be able to do it justice

This style helps people who don't have big buns to get big buns...:)

It also completely astonishes people IRL.

Yes, it does! Sometimes it takes a bit of experimentation, but you can lay the braids (or twists) flater against your head for the first bun, then repeat it on the second go round (or third, if you have really thick hair).

I have nearly BSL with layers and I think sectioning would really help deal with the layers! I'm going to try out some kind of sectioned braided 'do tomorrow!

I lay the braids quite flat on my head which i think is what makes it look bigger, it feels a bit odd having such a flat bun though!
