View Full Version : September 2012: Lace Braids

September has already started. That means it's time for our next style of the month! This month:

Lace braids!

For anyone unfamiliar with lace braids, the technique is similar to a french braid, but additional sections of hair are only added to one side of the braid as opposed to both of them.

For example, here is a lace braid I used as a ponytail accent while doing some practice:

Have fun, everyone!

I should really try doing more lace braids. I finally tried out Lilithmoon's style in this video http://youtu.be/U1nfFtZwAGc and love it! Shame I am just wearing it in the house today.

Do lace rope braids count? I'm hopeless at normal lace braids, they turn in on themselves and look silly :/

They definitely count. I know what you mean about 3-strand lace braids turning. Sometimes they can be tricky, torque-wise, to keep their position. Lace ropes are a little more forgiving in that regard.

When I did my daughter's wedding hair, I did lace braids that ended in a curve with little flowers tucked in... hmmm ..... i guess I'll give them a try on me..after rinsing out the castor oil...and finishing the SMT...

I did this today: Lace braid and double buns.

Also, last week I did this carousel braid, which is a kind of lace braid. :D

I love doing lace braids! Something I do very often is like the ponytail accent you had but instead wrap it around a bun, it holds it very nicely! Also, do four strand French braids count as lace braids? You add hair to only one side when doing it.

Here are two very short lace braids used to keep hair out of my face while wearing it down.

I love this and practice on a side ponytail, but it never works! I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Today's style - with a fuzzy braid after a long day. :D
Lace braids on the sides, then the braids are joined and I did an ordinary English braid and tied off at about the waist. I'm very pleased with how this turned out! :D

Oh, I love lace braids!
I don't have any on myself, but I have a few I did on my doll:

This is a double waterfall braid with a lace braid at the bottom and a french braid in the middle. It's kinda off-center though.

thanks alvrodul!
hm no, only a similar video from an diagonal dutch braid spiral. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OTCjSm6r6w
in the end, its very easy. braid on left & right side an lace braid (i prefer to take hair from the face side). end both braids and lay them like in my video :). turn in the first one braid and pin it carefully. than wind the second braid in opposide direction around the coil :)
(hope you understand my creepy english:o)

This is my first attempt at a lace braid. It took a few trys this morning, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.107531729358174.15028.100003040438615&type=3#!/photo.php?fbid=275634035881275&set=a.107531729358174.15028.100003040438615&type=3&theater

Gumball, those lace braids look amazing. I've never yet been able to achieve a hairstyle of the month, but I should really give this one a go.

Oksana, you have more skill than I will ever have. :)

Everyone's lace braids look amazing! I did my hair in two dutch lace braids this morning and then took photos of them loose, pinned up into one bun, and into two. I usually struggle with dutch braids but found that doing them as lace braids made them it lots easier because I only had to manage adding hair from one side. I was rather pleased with the way they looked and will upload to this thread as soon as I am able to get the photos onto my computer!

Wow these pictures are beautiful, Will definately try this out as I'm having to be more inventive with updos as I'm starting out with WO washing! eeek

Another updo with lace braids. You can't really see it in this picture, but the sections that are added to the lace braids make little poufs along the sides of the head. A rather interesting look - and not the usual slicked back look you get when you do a french, dutch or lace braid. :D
I got the idea from this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_HPjg-f8iQ).

Okay, I finally uploaded my photos and I thought I'd better post them since there's not much of September left!

Here are the two lace braids loose, from the back and the side:

http://i.imgur.com/FgXZb.jpg?1 (http://imgur.com/FgXZb)

http://i.imgur.com/Ihvws.jpg?1 (http://imgur.com/Ihvws)

Here they are in a single braided bun:

http://i.imgur.com/aW70Q.jpg?1 (http://imgur.com/aW70Q)

And here they are in double buns:

http://i.imgur.com/sQLuo.jpg?1 (http://imgur.com/sQLuo)

Funny story: I really liked the look of the double buns and was planning to wear them out but my Mum made a comment that they looked like two B**bs on the back of my head (not the look I was going for!) and I felt so self-conscious about it that I took them down and put them in a more socially acceptable Chinese bun!

Sorry for posting so many pictures but I wanted to show you all the different styles I tried!

I know it doesn't look it, but this is lace braided. Honest.
http://i.imgur.com/NCCFXl.jpg

I lace braided it in a spiral starting from the middle then wrapped the rest of the braid around it to make a very flat bun-like thing. My sectioning was awful so it's ended up looking very messy, but I kinda like it.

ETA: The whole thing stays up with a single bobby pin, too!
