anyone else around APL with horrendous layers that won't stay in anything? i can manage a cinnabun without everything falling apart, but anything else has little bits poking out everywhere. my hair just slips right out of a french braid.

has anyone had any success with their updos at this stage?

Mybe you can try twists? Otherwise, you can put just a little aloe vera gel or oil in your hair before braiding/putting it up. This tend to make the hair a bit easier to work with. :)

I found french braid to work for me, but you have to do it tight. Dutch braid works too, but the ends will stick more out than on a french braid. Hope this helps :)

Oh, and I used to braid my bangs with french/dutch braid and tie it in a high ponytail

Gibson tuck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5JZOVnSjjE) was my favorite when I was at your length with layers.

I adore my layers, but they made updos difficult for quite a while. I think once I passed waist they stopped being such a PITA. I had the best luck damp bunning and braiding. Hang in there.

If one French braid doesn't work... try two. A lot of the time smaller sections of hair end up more secure. This also works with English, Dutch and lace braids. Or if you really want to get fancy, you can learn to do things like French rope braids or French fishtail braids. There are a ton of youtube tutorials on neat ways to use 2 braids.

Another sectioning trick is to make more than one bun. LaDollyVita33's little black dress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNcEt-mTVKM&list=PLF328B7C305D1780C&index=4&feature=plpp_video) updo shows one way of arranging multiple buns. Again, there's lots of other options. If 2 buns doesn't work, try 3 even.

I do my hair when its damp and it really helps bunning go easier.

A french braid and cinnabun work for me right now! I forgot about gibson tucks... they are hard for me to do... better practice :( and yes I was going to say maybe try two french braids instead of one. Half ups are nice too!

Fremch twist, cinnabun, sock bun are my go to buns for the moment. That is all I can get my hair to do. I am looking forward to being able to do an orchid bun again.
