Thread: Does henna make your hair silky or dry?...

I don't understand, because different people seem to get from henna these very different kinds of results 🤔

I think if I didn't use deep conditioner after henna hairdye, my hair would be really dry...

Is it just that different labels have so different quality somehow?..

Dry for me. It was dry after applying (and after using bottles of conditioner on it). It typically took a looong time to get oily on my roots after each application, which is in essence why I liked it enough to apply it the whole of the spring & summer (in my 20s). But the color got so dark from it. I did henna much later in life, again, only to get to the same thing. The upkeep, so hard. Even harder than regular box dye.

Silky for me, I never had to use conditioner when I was using henna. I always used good body quality henna, brand didn't seem to matter.

Drying for me--usually takes about a week to recover after applying. It adds some of the additional sheen that I might associate with "silkiness," but it certainly does not leave my hair softer or more pliable like that term could also imply.

Because no one's hair is the same and doesn't react to the same products, techniques, tools, styles, etc. the same way. That is the rule for pretty much every style, technique, hair product, hair toy, etc. you will read about here... which is why I keep saying: you have to try many things until you find what works for you personally. Taking as gospel what someone else says you should/shouldn't do, should/shouldn't use, etc. without finding out for yourself isn't productive. What works for someone else may not work for you. What doesn't work for someone else may work for you. What someone else's hair is like may not be achievable for you. People are different, bodies are different, hair is different. There's rarely an "easy" answer.
Putting it in my signature because I have to say it so often:
Do what works for your hair, not what other people say is "right" or "wrong." If it works for you, it's not wrong. If it doesn't work for you, it's not right.

Dry for me, maybe even brittle.

Brittle, yes. Even that. I mean I hardly saw the difference at one point between bleached hair and hair treated with henna. Equally as highly porous for me.

That’s the key here and it’s true for literally everything in life

In my case, henna makes my hair silky - it gets shiny and smooth, but feels maybe a tad coarser. The effects last just a couple of weeks, then it goes back to “normal”. Though I guess I won’t really know what “normal” is until I grow my natural hair out
