Default Getting my VERY first hair toy... what should I get?

I want something simple and decently priced that will keep my just-beyond-APL hair up and in place. (got a picture of my length in my album on my profile.) My present go-to hairstyle is the sock bun, but I am worrying that the constant rolling is tearing my hair up because I have noticed quite a few new split ends... or it just could be about time for a S&D session.

Anyway... what should I get? I was looking at hair sticks because they are pretty simple, but I was really worried that they wouldnt stay because my hair isnt very long yet. What do you think?

    Im at the same point.
I've tried hair sticks but I also have fine hair so my bun just looks pathetic haha. Need to wait a while for that.
French rolls are a great style for us, so maybe a seam free comb? Or I'm tempted by a ficcare but I will have to save for those.

Ktani mentioned that catnip was great for preventing split ends, just make a tea & rinse after shampoo, no need for conditioner. But in the mean time sounds like S&D is in order.
    Hope that helps

I vote mairzydozy's hair forks in a 3" for you. She makes gorgeous things! I just got my second one today for my bday! On my way to getting my 3rd!

I vote for spin pins. You can get them in nearly any drugstore, they are inexpensive and they are awesome at holding up hair.

I'm pretty new to hair toys myself, but I really like PacificMaercantile's hair sticks....particularly the acrylics, because they are so smooth, pretty, and waterproof. Spin Pins are pretty good, too.

I am another who would like to recommend Pacific Mercantile for a first hairtoy - his sticks are quite inexpensive, and of good quality. Personally I prefer his wooden sticks, but the acrylic sticks are also very nice.
If you prefer a fork, I agree that Mairsydozy is very good - or if you would prefer wood, have a look at Jeterforks!
Another possibility is a Flexi-8. I find them very versatile!

I suppose it all comes down to what your personal taste is!

I really do love most things, but I think for me it is going to come down to what will hold in my hair the best. I know I have to experiment with a few different things before I know for sure, but while I do have a few extra dollars to spend, I was hoping to spend it on something that is nearly failproof. (if there is such a thing. lol).

Thanks so much for the advice thus far! I've got some window shopping to do now. Any other suggestions are most definitely welcome, as I probably wont be buying anything until tomorrow morning (tuesday).

I agree with the recommendations of Ketylos and Pacific Merchantile sticks. They were my first sticks and I was very happy with them. MairzyDozy has some really pretty things but I found the width between the prongs too much to hold my hair up. One of their slim forks might work though. I think 60th Street forks are great for first hair forks.

My hair is not very long either but I've been able to use hair sticks since it was 19".
