...out of cheapo chopsticks permanently borrowed from my school's dining hall. I've sanded them down, but how should I finish them? I've heard nail polish works well, but also polyurethane, which I have better access to. And should I apply several coats? Advice? Tips? Commiserations?

I just wiped mine off the sanding dust and applied a few coats of jojoba oil, the same as I use in my hair and thei turned out perfectly smooth and good. The oil should protect them from moisture and can be added when needed.

I've made knitting needles out of cheapo chop sticks and I sharpened them in a pencil sharpener, sanded them, and just oiled them with a beeswax and olive oil salve and rubbed it in well and let it soak in! Voila! almost perfect size 10 knitting needles! They are very smooth too!

You may want to check out the self made hairtoys thread. It is a long thread but has a lot of info about all kinds of hairtoys.

I use a wood stain with polyurethane in it or just plain mineral oil. I like the mineral oil more. Quick and easy to apply.
