Soapnuts I have seen are dry to the touch. That is how they are preserved.

Soapnuts have antibacterial/antifungal properties but once a bag is opened, if they are moist, I would, vacuum seal them, dry them or possibly freeze them to preserve them, if they are not going to be used fairly quickly.

Prunes and raisins are referred to as high moisture dried fruit (HMDF).

"Microbial content of commercial South African high-moisture dried fruits
.... study shows the presence of Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Clostridium in South African HMDF. .... presence of thermoduric organisms indicated .... current pasteurization process is not adequate and that the addition of preservatives would be an additional method to ensure safety and quality."

"Preservation of high-moisture dried prunes with sodium benzoate instead of potassium sorbate
As the moisture content of the prunes increased, the level of preservative required increased."

Perhaps they add some preservatives to the juicier ones?

It should say so on the label.

After reading those links, I would go by both tradition and the science, and buy only dry preserved soapnuts as opposed to any vendor claims.

I would not expect a vendor to say anything other that what he did claim.

My first batch were dry and still had the stone intact but my second lot were pitted and sticky much better for making shampoo with. I think they get sticky after transit due to the natural soaps being expossed.

Also after washing with soapnuts I finish with a catnip rinse.

A question for Ktani I make a batch of soapnut shampoo in advance like a 1/2 litre bottle, would it be O.K. to do this with catnip or does it need to be made up just before I use it?

Another thing i have noticed, I started with the soapnuts just after a massive s&d, 2 hours long and cut loads off. I admit I haven't been as vigilent with the catnip as I was earlier last year, but intend to use this after each herbal wash. Today I found just 5 splits, I think this is a lot to do with the soapnuts and the catnip. Totally natural; makes me think even shampoos without 'so called' chemicals harm the hair.

I have not used them but I did check them out at a health food store. They were on the shelf in a bag but I could see that they were dry.

I do not know how long the sticky ones are in transit or stored before they get to people but I think that the dry ones are a better bet for use.

".... soapnuts are sticky and golden in color when fresh and get reddish brown when dried."

    I would still buy dried.

I don't have much choice, unfortunately - no one carries sticky ones in the US.

I would like to try them though if they clean better. I still have a little bit of greasiness now and then.

It makes sense that fresh ones would lather more. As to better cleansing, perhaps.

I just do not think that they are as safe in terms of transit time and storage, compared to dry, preserved ones, where there is no moisture to allow bacteria or, fungal growth. I think that the sticky ones are fresh as opposed to dried.
