No or almost never
Fairly often
Always, almost always
Just wondering what many do, although those who bun with sticks Im guessing dont. A pony seems to help with keeping the bun up for me and I use a slice of cut silk stockings to wrap it with.

No, I don't pony my hair before bunning. I prefer to section my hair then bun as desired.
No, I gather my hair as though I'm going to make a pony but I don't secure it with an elastic or anything. Once gathered, I twist and bun it with a stick.

The only time I pony before bunning is when I do the Chinese bun. I don't do that one very often though.
On my hair, that would be too damaging. I never pony my hair before bunning.

My hair is so heavy that whenever I make a ponytail it notsoslowly falls off, and if I make a bun from that.. well, it does stay, but it doesn't look tidy at all
The only way to keep a bun tight and secure is to put it in a ponytail first.
Sometimes I use a ponytail as a base for my bun, but not always (I picked the second option). It just really depends on the style. Rose Buns, for example, always need to start from a ponytail, while cinnabuns are impossible if I used an elastic. I also need to be careful about whether to start with a ponytail or not because I get the absolute worst updo headaches if I use elastics because of how they distribute weight.
