They actually did this before straighteners were invented.

I did do that once. I was about 14 and really wanted a straightener. My parents did allow me to have one for my birthday or christmas or somethingbut I had a bee in my bonnet and wanted to straighten "now" so I couldn't wait. I had read that people used to straighten using an iron so I decided to give it a go. I think I set it on silk and only did a little bit.
To be honest, I think the straightener I actually got in the end did more damage to my hair than using a warm iron since they did not have ceramic plates at that stage plus mine changed into a crimper and we used to leave those things on our hair for ages!!
It really doesn't shock me to see that image at all.
I ironed my hair before straighteners too. Just put a piece of baking paper over the hair and ironed!
Obviously it's much more dangerous to use a clothes iron like that, but it doesn't seem to me like it would be worse for the hair than a flat iron. Remember, with a flat iron, the heat is coming from both sides while your hair gets crimped in the middle!
That reminds me of Hairspray!
Tracy Turnblad: How do you get your hair so straight and so flat?
Beatnik Chick: With an iron, man. I play my bongos, listen to Odetta, and then I iron my hair, dig?
Myth: Gingers have no soul.
Fact: Gingers earn a freckle for every soul they steal.
My friends and I used to do that all the time When I first found out it was possible to iron your hair, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I had never experienced perfectly straight hair before!

Eek! O_O
Haha.
My mom says she did that in high school (I don't know if that was once or frequently), back in the early 70s. And she thinks her hair can't grow much past her shoulders. Maybe if you didn't iron it.........

Long hair hiatus: short hair for now, buzzcut!
I did that too, a few times, because my parents never got me a straightener.
