I remember some friends in high school who would do that. It turned their super curly hair pin straight and lasted the few days between washings... much quicker than the flat iron!

Hahahah that looks sort of desperate on the picture.
I'm wondering though... how to straighten the hair that's very close to your scalp like that?

It also makes me think of that waffle-iron sort of thing we used to have at home to turn straight hair wavy, like this. I always thought it looked silly so never used it.

My cousin did this when she came over to England a few years ago and couldn't bring her straightener. Mystified me at the time.

Okay, so when I clicked on the thread and followed the link, that was soooooooo not what I was expecting, and my monitor was looking back at me with my eyes looking something like for a good ten seconds.

Wow... necessity is the mother of all invention, isn't it? I think that rock I used to live under is still covering part of me, because really, I shouldn't be shocked by something like that.... and now I have the urge to call my mom and ask her if she ever tried that!

That's a crimping iron! I had one! I think just about every girl who grew up in the 80s had one or had access to one through friends. Funny, I hadn't thought about that thing for years. I never used it much... it didn't get hot enough to really do much to my hair. Also I was short on patience and long on hair... too much time, even if it did work. LOL.
