    What are hair color levels?
Hair color levels are simply how much lightness or darkness is present in hair, which is a necessity for hairstylists when they need to lighten or darken their client's hair color. Also it can help you more clearly define your hair color. The chart consists of 10 levels from lightest (platinum blonde) to darkest (black).

What is your natural hair color level?

BEST way to find out: go to a professional salon and ask them to determine your hair color level.
Good way to find out: Do a black and white color test on one or several pictures and compare it to the chart as in the example below.
Okay way to find out: Compare a color picture to the hair color chart or from a haircolor website, like Loreal or Clairol.

It's very true that most peoples natural colours will vary within maybe three shades just depending on lighting because natural colour is so dimensional!
Most people wonder which is their &true& level, but most people's hair color varies a lot with the light! Consider your friends and family and perhaps take a look at some pictures of them. You can probably see a lot of variation in their hair color too, but there is probably one that you think of them as having the most. The same applies to your hair. Perhaps you may even want to ask a friend which level they think your hair color matches most on the chart, for an objective perception.
Pigmentation matters! It is possible for pigmentation to transcend level; for example, I know of some Level 5 ash blondes. Though their hair is darker than the chart shows for typical blondes, a hairdresser would see that the lack of warmth and richness to their hair is typical of blonde hair, so they are still blondes. In that same sense, I believe it is possible for there to be level 7 brunettes, and obviously level 6 as well. For those middle levels, it really becomes a matter of pigmentation. If you had light blonde hair till your teens, it's likely you would be on the blonde side of 6. If you always considered yourself a light brunette, you probably are.

    How to choose a picture:

You probably want to take a picture of your hair at its lightest, darkest, and somewhere in between. I find it easiest to take three pictures in a room with a big window.

Standing right next to the window should give you the lightest hair color.
9.5, 9.5, comparable to light ash blonde

standing in the middle of the room will give you your middle color
8.5, comparable to medium ash blonde

and then standing far away from the window will give you the darkest.
7.5, comparable to dark ash blonde

I'm naturally somewhere between a 7-8 (we "levelled" our hair in beauty school, haha) but with henna and deposit only red dye I'm now somewhere closer to a 6.

    nearly bangs-less! 10/19/11.

5.5. I picked 6 because I think it's closer, but wow, I would never call myself a dark blonde.

I'm naturally like a 9, but I color to about a 4 or 5. It looks much better with my very pink skin tone and green eyes

I thought I was naturally about a level 6 but I went to a colourist recently to tone down my dyed hair to closer to my natural colour (which had about 2" of roots by then) and she told me that I am actually naturally a level 8.
