It looks to me like it might be a crown braid that originates from the back, goes around the head and continues around until it parallels the starting place. Then the remainder of the braid is coiled in the center to form the braided bun.
Alternately, some of the hair might have been held in reserve and pinned up while the rest was crown braided and the end tassle tucked into the braid.
Then the reserved part was braided, then coiled into a center bunned braid.
Lunnafindel has quite a head of hair to play with!
I just can't do a crown braid. My fingers won't cooperateShame cause I really really love it.

this has become one of my new favorites, but I fake it. I do 2 braids on the sides, wrap one around the back, secure with a couple pins. wrap the other around the front, secure with pins, and tuck the ends under. it looks like a continuous braid around. a faux-crown braid.
Yes, I know, it is now May 2012. However, although I do crown braids fairly often, I never seem to get any decent pictures of them! So finally, here was one (ignore the grimace on my face; I was looking towards the sun for the better part of an hour to perform the wedding ceremony, and it was killing me!)
Here it is from the side (I was adjusting the bride's dress)

Eirelin, that is an awesome crown braid! And I love your hair colour.
Good job, Eirelin. This is a very nice braid indeed, and what a nice hair colour and shine!![]()

I know I'm hitting up an old thread but I found that when my hair was shorter a parandi made all the difference it giving me some extra thickness, poof and length to complete a crown braid.
Happy braiding!
