    Default DIY Favorites share

I've been collecting recipes for some DIY shampoos, treatments, and such. I didn't see a thread like this in the search so I thought it would be nice to share some DIY recipes.

Here a a few favorites I've collected so far, and a few I've mixed up myself. There are several ways to do these and they all can be tweaked. Some people do them differently.

Use a funnel for pouring into shampoo bottle

*massage onto scalp work well into ends
    *leave in 10 minutes
    *shampoo good for 1 week

I'm sorry. I sometimes do stuff like that and I do know better. For the past 2 years I've had severe memory issues where I'll even spell the smallest words wrong, even though I've spelled them right a million times since elementary school. If you noticed, almost everything I post gets edited because I re- read over and over to try to correct myself to avoid sounding stupid. I have 2 brain tumors, both in spots effecting memory.

I thought my house was was haunted because I'd find lights on or off, only to find out later that I was the one doing it. It really stinks.

Anywho, You should follow me around for a while and spell check everything if you aren't busy.
I kind of need it lately.

Second thought: There may have been a thread for this already anyway. This site has been here forever. I didn't check the archived threads

The archived threads are down, and no one really looks there anymore anyway. I'm happy you're sharing favorite recipes, especially if they work well for you. Maybe that'll help someone else too.

This is a very simple one but I mix a few drops of rosemary in with the oil I'm using when oiling, like coconut, jojoba or argan. It's harder to mix in with shea butter though, haha!

I don't know if this one is a DIY or more of a technique but if I want to wash my hair with eggs (for protein) I take the yolk, one is usually enough, and mix in a small amount of my silicone-free washing conditioner, and apply to the tips of the hair. After that I mix in a bit more of conditioner and take the next part above and continue to work my way up mixing in more and more conditioner until I get to my scalp where it is the reversed ratio from what I started with. It works great since my roots really don't need much protein but the ends seems to sometimes, I also add a bit of water sometimes with the conditioner if I don't have that greasy hair.
And oh, a few drops of rosemary in this mixture too sometimes

I love this idea for a thread. Bumping and adding my own contribution in hopes that we can get a collection going here!

    Soapnut/Aritha Wash

    1 Tbsp soapnut shell pieces
    1 cup water

Pour boiling water into a jar over soapnut pieces. Let sit overnight or at least until cooled. Strain into applicator bottle. To use, shake well to create foam and apply to dry hair, focusing on scalp, until hair is evenly covered (add a little more water to bottle if needed). Let sit for around 5 minutes, rinse well.

    Conditioning Rinse

1 spoonful each catnip, marshmallow root, and hibiscus
    1/2 tsp honey
    Water

Pour over boiling water and brew in a mug as for regular tea, using a strainer or straining out herb pieces after several hours or at least until cool. Or for best extraction of marshmallow mucilage, boil this herb separately for 15 minutes or so, then pour over hibiscus and catnip. Before use, add honey and warm water to make 1 quart of rinse. Leave on for at least 10 minutes after washing, then rinse until water runs clear. May stain light hair.

    Honey Deep Conditioning Treatment

    3 parts honey
1 part olive (or other favorite) oil

Warm honey for a few seconds in the microwave. Pour in oil while stirring to emulsify. Apply to ends of wet hair. Leave on for as long as desired, then rinse well in clear water. No need to wash out.

    Coconut Sandalwood Winter Scalp Mask

    1/2 tsp coconut oil
2 drops sandalwood in jojoba carrier oil (I use a pre-mixed blend from Aura Cacia)

Mix well, warming if desired. Part hair in sections and apply directly to scalp, focusing on dry areas. Massage in and leave on for 10 minutes to overnight before washing.

I've tried shikakai paste with amla and it was worth trying.

Oh, and I'm interested in trying your "Homemade natural shampoo", Mrstran. I love DIYs.

Mrstran these are great! I'll probably try the shampoo recipe

My personal favorite DIY is a scalp refresher/dry shampoo! Mix 1 part of witch hazel for 3 parts water and then add 15 drops of rosemary oil and 10 drops of lavender. Spray on scalp on non wash days. As someone with naturally oily hair it's been great for cutting down on washes and making my hair feel fresh!

Neat! I feel like I've been hearing about with hazel a lot lately as a scalp toner between washes but I wasn't sure how it was used.
