hey, perhaps even a shortie like me can play here too!
I have done a chinese bun by wrapping my too short hair in a silk scarf and using that, it is pretty comfy and seems to hold well...hope this counts?

i would love to know how this is done!!!
Well what do you know, I just made my first attempt at a braided Chinese bun yesterday. I must be psychic. And I took pics. Just have to wait for the issue with uploading photos to albums to be resolved and then I'll be able to share.
Will join in - just not today! ;o)
I've got a fabulous Kanzashi and Kogai that looks so pretty - maybe I should save it for the Japanese version, though! (First I need to find out just what that is....!!!)

Short how-to for a Chinese bun is:
1. Make a ponytail and put a hair-stick through the base of it, between the elastic and your scalp.
2. Divide the ponytail into two equal halves (left and right).
3. Put the right halve over the right end of the hair-stick and the left halve over the left hair-stick. Spoiler alert for the Japanese bun > cross strands under the bun and repeat this step.
4. Wrap the remaining length around the base of the bun (between hair-stick and head) simultaneously. One strand clockwise the other one counterclockwise, crossing over each other on top or beneath the base of the bun.
I have a picture-how-to somewhere, but yeah we'll need to wait for the pic-upload problem to be solved first I guess.
So meanwhile some old pics it is for now
It should end up looking somewhat like those
Braided versions:
box-braided
dutch box-braided
dutch rope-braided
dutch braided
This may seem like a silly question, but how do you get this bun to stay? I've tried it several times, and every time it just falls right out.
Fairy tail ends.
I tend to wrap the length loose in the beginning and when I reach the ends I kind of wrap them closer to my head and under the main bulk of the hair near the elastic. They stay put on their own.
Which did not work at all when I still had a blunt hemline.
Then I needed to "pincusion" it with a whole armada of u-pins![]()
I think I'm bun stupid. Blah I just get knots.
