Try a sock bun: Put your hair in a ponytail, cut off the top of a thick sock and roll it until you have a doughnut shape, then stick that on top of the ponytail band. Comb your hair evenly over the sock so all of it is covered, then wrap the ends of your hair around the bun and secure them.

Yep, sock bun. That's what I was going to say.

EDIT: If you don't like the ends, you could try a fully rolled sock bun. Loepsie has a video for it on YouTube.

    I third the sock bun.

For the variation you could also try braiding a scarf into your hair and then turn the braid into a bun. I'm not sure if it works, never tried it myself.

You can also try fully rolled sock bun, which looks even bigger. This it the Loepsie's tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I13J7ArHTkM - first there's a normal sock bun. Fully rolled version begins more or less at 3:55 min.

There was a thread recently about using a scarf to make a bun, and if the goal is a big bun, that scarf bun might be as effective as a sock bun.

The only other thing I can think of is not really a bun, but it is a very old method of putting your hair up. You start with small sections of hair (like a grid on your scalp), perhaps starting at the crown, and you finger roll each small section and pin one side of the little roll at the scalp, thus it takes up a lot of space, and I think you can wrap some of the lower sections over or around some of the crown sections and you can really create a big updo. I think this would be a romantic look. Historically it was done with all lengths of hair, but I tried it and got my waist length hair in a big mass of tangles.

With more length, there are other ways of making a big bun.

Everyone's already mentioned the sock bun, so give me a moment to think...

Elizabeth at Rapunzel's Resource gives instructions on some buns that involve pin rolls. I haven't tried them myself, but these styles look very pretty and they seem to give the effect of a voluminous bun. The buns are also supposed to give very pretty waves/curls, too.

Pin Roll Bun II - Curly Bun

    Pin Roll Bun III

I will warn you that the author is quite religious in most of her posts. It's not a bad thing, of course, but I know it bothers some people. I really love her tutorials and her hair is gorgeous.

Torrin Paige also has a video on how to do a braided sock bun with ribbon. It gives a very pretty result.

    Hope that helps!

Use a rat (a.k.a. postiche). A rat is made from the hair you pull out of your comb/brush and save. You can either ball it all up, or, if you have the patience, lay the hairs out in a more orderly fashion. Then you use it to pad your bun. Unlike a sock or a scarf, a rat automatically matches the color of your hair.

first choice is the sock bun, second is THE CLIP BUN.
You can use a smaller clip than the one I use here. It still should add volume.
There are 2 variations I do.

You could also try the Wonder Bun with a bandanna.

    Good luck
