Default Straight texture with curly underneath?

Hey guys! Long time not visit Anyways, every time I go to the hair dresser, and they start sectioning my hair or looking at my roots, they're amazed. They tell me that I have fine, little corkscrew curls at the base of my hair. The thing is, my hair is about bra-strap length, thick and straight. It's never curled naturally, and doesn't have any wave that I'm aware of. At first I thought it was breakage from brushing, but I haven't used a normal hair brush in years (I prefer a tangle tamer or a comb). I've never felt any curl "disrupting" the rest of my hair at the roots, but I've been to multiple hairdressers and they've told me the same thing. My fathers side of the family has corkscrew curly hair, but my mothers side has straight hair.

Whats up up with my hair?

    Thanks everyone

Probably be easier to tell if you do a proper hair typing picture - to do that you need to wash your hair and not touch it at all (no brushing, combing or even running your hands through) till it is dry.
The other thing to try (separately) is the Curly Girl method, to see if that brings out curls in your hair!

Do you mean curls underneath around your hairline or curls all over?

I have a small section of curls at both temples and a small section at nape. The rest of my hair is wavy.

The next time I shower, I'll be sure to try to do a proper typing. Can you describe the curly girl method? I'm sure I'll look into it, but I've never heard of it before

They (the hairdressers) always seem to notice them around the back of head, about mid-skull. I've never noticed them around my hairline or temples.

So I looked up the curly girl method, and I've already done it! I went on a no silicone, no sulfate, co wash kick for about 6-8 months to try and nurture my hair after I bleached my hair (bad desicion ) about 3 years ago. It didn't change my texture, but it was much gentler on my hair.

I second the hair typing picture. Just leaving your hair alone when air drying can be enough to see some curls, or at least some waves.

Yes, hairtyping picture! Another vote for it. I'm even willing to bet you're a 2c wavy, unless you have really weird hair. Straight (like 1a straight) with corkscrew curls underneath, now that's... odd.

It's not unusual to have very different hairtypes on one head I have pretty straight parts in my canopy, and underneath only at the nape and behind my ears some coarser spirals. I'll post a pic in a bit.

Here we go. I used to think it was breakage too because it's shorter, but the ringlets are just coarser and tangle easier than the rest of my hair.

Example of 2 different strands of my hair untouched after washing, one from canopy and one from nape.
