I like the sound of auburn, though - do you think that something like Nightshade's gloss over my own natural brown would look okay? If it's henna then hopefully I'd still get the odd flash of lighter red in the sun...
Yes, I think you can totally pull off red with the right shade. It's not like you look horrible in the pics you posted, just more washed out than with the brown. Also keep in mind that this is just my personal opinion, and it doesn't make anything right or wrong Sadly I don't know much about henna, but I'm sure the experts on here can tell you more about what can be achieved. I've definitely seen some people on here with hennaed hair that is a cooler shade of red. Here are a few pictures to show you what I think would be good/not so good.

I like the brown, it brings your features out and looks really pretty on you. The red seems to wash you out a bit.

Just to clarify - I have nothing against the "don't" colours as such. It was just to show what I think would look best on Freija. So I apologize if anyone was offended by it

You've got a great skin tone for just about any color, I'd bet. Both the red and your natural color look great. I really love your cut in the third picture.

If I were you, I'd totally got ridiculously rich, unnatural shade of red. Like a manic panic in vampire red or something that leans toward purple. But maybe that's my own preference projecting itself... :P

I like your natural colour on you, but I think the red, particularly in the first and third pictures looks nice as well. I think the key would be keeping the red rather subtle and cool-toned, as someone else mentioned.

If you feel better and more "you" with reddish hair, then by all means continue! You tried out your natural colour, so you never have to wonder "what if?", and now can choose which you prefer.

Do (either of) you think I could get a shade similar to http://www.becomegorgeous.com/img/us...y_hair-117.jpg with a vegetable-based dye but no bleach? It is gorgeous (and I can always change my mind, unlike with henna). My only thought, though, would be that I'm not nearly as white as she is (her arms look like bones!) - would it still work okay?

I think that colour would work well even with a slight tan, though the red hair against white skin is certainly striking. If you want to use Manic Panic colours, some of them work really well on virgin/unbleached hair. This is Vampire Red on an italian lady with unbleached hair. I'm assuming her natural colour is not blonde: http://www.manicpanic.com/images2/be...t/vampred5.jpg. The good thing is that it won't harm your hair, and if you don't like it, you can always re-dye or just wait for it to fade out. The key to getting a nice even colour is to make sure you put enough product on. And ofc, the longer you leave it in - the longer it will last. Many people sleep with the dye in their hair overnight. You might need to mix two colours to get close to the shade you want.

That's incredible! And thanks for the tips - I've only used box dyes/henna before, so if I decide to go for this, it'll be a new experience!

There are so many shades, though, practically an infinite number if I decided to start mixing them...

Edit: What about this colour? I'm not sure how I'd achieve it, though.
