There's a variation of the nautilus (or inside-out) bun that can be done without twisting: here are the instructions in the archive, and here's a picture of the style in my albums.
MaidMarian called it the Soft Nautilus Bun.
Silverlox - thanks for the suggestions! I think I'll make a braid category and put the pinless braided bun with other braided or braid based updos. As for the sock bun, I'm not sure where to put it. I've only tried the style once myself, so I don't know how tight that sock is. Would you say it's about equal to a ponytail?

From Hip to Ankle and now back to Hip again.
Teazel - thank you for including links with that! It's been added.
This is a great idea -- thanks for doing this!
eadwine's wrap knot bun does not require twisting.
Not only equal, it is a ponytail.
The sock bun starts with a ponytail, just like the Chinese bun. Regardless of how tight the sock is, the ponytail is what is holding the entire 'do up. In fact, it's actually doubly ponytailed.
The short version:
Make a pony, band it.
Pull tail through hole in sock donut, let hair fall over sock to cover it.
Add second ponytail band/elastic/scrunchie to keep sock in place.
Arrange ends of hair any way you please.
Voila, you have an official sock bun.

Silverlox - thank you for the explanation. I didn't realize there was an actual ponytail involved, not just the sock.
Akiko - I've added it. Thank you!
darkwaves - hope it'll turn out to be useful!

You're welcome!
The only reason I know the sock bun so well is because I have such puny hair. Adding a sock is just about the only way I can have an impressively sized bun.

Silverlox - as a fellow ii, and a lower end one at that, I know what you mean!
I've added more links to instructions to the first post, as well as all the styles suggested so far in the thread. More instruction links will be added as I come across them, and additional style suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks to everyone who's helped so far!
Karen Lynn,
My topsy bun has nothing to twist to do it except for a loose little bun ontop of it
