    Question Good Sun hat suggestions?

    Hey all,
As you know, I'm outdoors a lot for work. When I'm teaching, I keep my head covered with a hat. However, I'm finding my head gets really hot.

Also, since I put all my hair up into a braid/bun, I need a hat that can fit hair that is long/thick/low. Many hats I wear I have a problem with this over the course of the day. Baseball hats are good, but make me hot.

Since many people here are from different countries were summers are really hot/warm---can you suggest a hat that keeps the sun out of my eyes, off my head but also breathes so I don't over heat? That can accomidate a lot of hair at the base, and that the hat doesn't push forwards? I have a tilly hat, but I'd like to have a spare hat when that one is being washed.

    Thanks!

I'd be interested to find this out as well. I burn pretty easily, so I always try to cover up when I go outside.

    Does anybody have any ideas?

When the sun is burning I usually tie a scarf around my head (put it over my bunned hair and tie.) A white one so that my head stays cool. Parhaps you could do that as an alternative.

I bought a hat at the beginning of summer and I'm liking it. It was an immediate need purchase - I liked its crushability and the UPF 50. Only downside yet is non-machine washable

I went to a really neat hat store while I was on vacation in Key West and got an adorable straw hat. It has a big floppy brim that keeps my face shaded. If you can find a little hat store. they'll carry a whole bunch of sizes to accomodate your braid/bun.

Why not a visor type hat or full brimmed hat with the rooftop missing?

    Like this...

Then take your hair up on a bun and instead of tying the tie-off in front or under chin or foregoing it entirely, secure the tieoff under your bun on the backside of the head, or the velcro strip under the bun on the backside. This helps with positioning.

If the hair part is exposed, consider using sunscreen on your scalp skin part.

    Still wear sunscreen!!

ETA: you could still opt to wear a bandanna and then put on such a hat....

I have this one: http://www.berkeleyhat.com/wibrstpihat.html. In beige, not black. I only wear it when I am gardening, as it's not exactly normal headwear in these days and times (unless you are at the racetrack). It's not washable, and you probably can't fit your bun inside it, but it's breathable and shades not only your face but much of your body as well.

I had a floppy sunhat made by a lady on etsy, that is open in the back so it accomodates a bun.

Heh, I was going to recommend a Tilley, so perhaps a second one? They have lots of different styles now so you could get a second in one of the more ventilated or wider-brimmed varieties.
