Aye, if you're getting that sort of irritation, you shouldn't use it
Maybe a soap cap would be better for you instead?
Well, I wanted to use exactly the same brand, so I ordered from Ebay and used the yellow bottle, not the pink one like Nightshade mentioned. I don't know if there's a difference, except for scent maybe. This one:
I tried it a second time, without coconut oil but with slightly greasy hair. Blow dried for half an hour, then washed. Still, friggin skin irritation... it itches like crazy! I also have red bumps behind my ears and in my neck.
In direct light I can see a bit of lightening, but still nothing too drastic. If it would've worked better than this and one or two applications would have been enough, I would keep using it, despite the hassle of having an itchy scalp for a few days after, but now I decided it's enough, it's not for me.
Pha, do you remember what brand you used back then? I do consider to try the John Frieda version as a plan B, don't know what else to do...

my as someone with a cosmetology license- anything with peroxide is not shelf-stable more than a year or two. If you purchased online, is it possible the product you purchased was very old? Chemicals have a way of either A. Breaking down or B. Becoming stronger over time in storage. Heat/temperature exposure also plays a role.

Quick Google search taught me "bleach wash". Will look into that further. It sounds scary, never worked with direct bleach before and I know nothing, Jon Snow.
@Blue Mermaid: You could definitely be right. I was thinking it might be less potent since I bought it from a random seller at Ebay and you never really know what you're gonna get...
It's not scary, really You could always start with a very low level of bleach and work your way up.

I have to say, this whole thread was a huuuuge help to me. I’d heard so much bad stuff about sun-in I never thought to use it, and this felt like permission to try! I’m getting ready to henna my hair for the first time ever, with fire genasi, and I really wanted to start with a lighter shade than my ashy medium brown. I knew it could be lighter, as after long summers in the sun I’ve gotten natural blonde highlights. I’ve done the sun-in about 4 or so times now, with coconut oil treatment before, and I looooove the results!! It gives my hair a warmer tone in addition to being lighter and hasn’t seemed to have caused much, if any, damage! I’m much more hopeful that I can achieve a coppery henna color rather than anything too dark! Thanks so much for the instructions Nightshade!!

I'm quite patient with growing out my darker (auburn) henna. The copper section that I use only cassia /henna mix on is down to my shoulders right now. I have not tried the sun-in for over a year or so, but today I did use it again. Just two rounds on the ponytail. Hope it will add some highlights to my braid and buns, because they look quite red especially pined up next to lighter roots.
Photographing hennaed hair in winter is a pain.
