I stored mine in the fridge. It was ok for about a week without any preservatives.

You can add some EO of your choice. That will make it last for weeks. Keep it always in the fridge.

How do you know when it has gone bad? Does it mold? Smell?

My gel had a slight scent to it, but not much - I decided it had gone bad when the smell went sort of icky-sweetish. I can't really explain it, but if it happens you'll recognize it.

Even if it's strained with nylon stockings? I don't want to have to try to get all those little bits out of my hair, lol.

I've always used the entire seeds and have strained them with a regular strainer. Maybe the nylon stockings is a good idea, but you have to do it while the mix is still very hot and liquid.

Carloota no problem I actually got the idea from a forum on naturally curly. com, trust me I made a big mess the time I tried before usingt the panty hose method . Mira-chan you have beautiful hair unfortunatly mine is not very long at long I wish I could pull mine up in a bun but due to the short length I can't so I'm trying to wait it out and be patient . Kwaniesiam yes I used the whole flaxseeds the ones you can eat.
I've used Flax seed gel since the 80's, I copied an Aveda recipe. I think it is great to spike hair and such. Definately rivals commericial products. Let us know if the Jojoba drops eliminate the crunchy flakies.

Use rosehip tea as the water and add a little vit E and you'll have natural preservatives.

I am going to try making flax seed gel for the first time. I already have some brown linseed, but I noticed golden linseed in the shop as well. Is there any reason to prefer one over the other?
