PPD Free Dyes (Sanotint, Tints of Nature, Naturtint, etc)

[I wasn't sure if this should go in the herbal haircare or conventional product forums. I chose to put it in herbal because I figured it was more likely to be seen by members using natural hair dyes, but if I was wrong I'm sorry!!]

So, I've been doing a lot of research related to ppd/ppt free dyes recently.

Like, a LOT of research. I currently have over 30 tabs open, I've been taking notes, and researching the archives.

One could say I'm a little obsessed.

I've found two semi permanent dyes that come in colors I like and are PPD, ammonia, and peroxide free. (That was my big struggled, finding a color I like that was also free of all these chemicals).

I was hoping someone here with more experience than me might have insights into the quality of these dyes. Do they look fairly safe to use?

And if you've used them, I'd love to see photos andor hear about your experience! I haven't been able to find any real reviews, sadly, so I have no idea what I'd be getting myself into.

I'm also interested in other safer alternatives!

I really love the bilberry sanotint - http://www.cosvalitaly.com/en/sanoti...id=21&slide=no - but I know it has more chemicals, like PPD and peroxide. And I was looking at Naturtint's reds and mahoganies at the store a few days ago, but they have a similar chemical recipe. And I posted about Garnier's Olia dye recently as well, which is ammonia free and has a natural oil base.

I guess I'm a little afraid of PPD and PPT now though, after all the research and archive reading I've been doing. I worry that if I find a PPD dye that I love and try to keep up that color (so dying once a month?) it may have adverse effects in the long run. Some people say it's not that dangerous but some people also say that it's SUPER dangerous, and I just don't know what to believe. But oh man, I just want that deep burgundy red.

Good that you specified the Tints of Nature semi-permanent, as the permanent version is definitely not PPD free, and the same goes for Naturtint! (The latter doesn't have a semi-permanent version, to my knowledge?)

Tints of Nature and Naturtint at least are honest about their permanent dyes containing (what they call low levels) of PPD, but it's really annoying how many dyes are advertised as "PPD free" altogether, when they do contain loads of PPD derivatives, even if not the actual paraphenylene-diamine, and those have basically the same effects...! Talking about misleading advertising... For example, this Apivita dye http://www.apivita.com/hair/hair-colorants.html is advertised as totally PPD free, but e.g. shade 7.4 has the following PPD derivatives (aminophenols): 2-Amino-3-Hydroxypyridine, 4-Amino-2-Hydroxytoluene, Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate, p-Methylaminophenol Sulfate.

Those semi-permanent ones you mentioned are to my knowledge safe to use, but imo very expensive, especially in the long run; but if you can get them at an affordable price, go ahead

There are actually some other deposit-only dyes that are fully PPD free, and they come cheaper as well, like Adore, Via Naturals and Manic Panic. And burgundy red is one of the shades most do have (it's the more natural shades that can be harder to find), so they sound like perfect match for you

I decided to ditch PPD dyes too a few months ago, it's just not worth the risk (especially since I've used a huge amount of them in my life until now), especially as there are alternatives...

(Oh, and I think this would actually belong in the conventional products forum, as that's what these are after all, not herbal dyes )

I can't believe I forgot to research Adore! It was on my list, but I just never looked at it. I had been shying away from Manic Panic and a few others because they were so bright, but Adore has a few shades that do look perfect

Could you possibly help me with one other thing? Between Adore and Adore Plus, is one safer? I really prefer the colors in Adore Plus, but I haven't heard as much about it, so I'm hesitant to use it. I'm looking at the ingredients, but I don't know exactly what to look for.

That article about PPD was absolutely terrifying. I was also reading recently than PPD builds up in your body from consecutive uses that are closer together. I had been on the fence about giving up PPD but I'm feeling pretty solid about it now. Better to stop now, after only dying a few times, rather than find a color I like and have to actually give it up once I'm attached!!

(I think so too but I don't know how to have it moved? >.<)

http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ use this! LOVE this site! Most of the time you can look up brands, but sadly this website can be slow in updating products. However you can (painstakingly) look up the individual ingredients. None of these have any cancer concerns, a lot of the ingredients scored between a 4-7. Mostly for having the possibility to be an irritant (I mean it's chemical hair dye, so no shock there!). As long as you do a patch test, these do seem safe. EWG also tells you what the ingredients do, and if you're not satisfied to EWG's description of what said ingredient is, look to google! Lots of other cosmetic esque databases to thoroughly explain what it is and does.

And thans for posting about adore hair dye, rosetta! When my hair is a bit healthier, I think I might throw some purple over my hair. I do miss the fun colors, but I think I need to heal and grow out my hair before I start throwing anything besides henna over it again. (: Actually, good question: Would adore (or any of this!) go over henna or multiple applications of henna? <3

Glad to be of help Of these, I don't think there's any difference regarding safety. (But any chemistry specialists, please chime in if I'm wrong!) I've used both myself. The Adore Plus was, if I recall, a little bit thicker and so easier to use (imo), as Adore is very liquid, but that's all

Surely it would, though if the henna is very dark, it might just not show very well.
