Diagonal! It's just easier that way, especially if you have a special topper meant to be seen from the side.
Always horizontally.

Diagonally, right to left. At least I try to do so. Sometimes the fork slides around and ends up in a horizontal line.
Diagonal, upper right to lower left. Usually I wear a stick (not a fork) and it's the same diagonal.
Except when I'm gardening and wearing my sun hat - then the stick is horizontal and the bun is quite low.
Or when I'm going to bed, then the bun is a top-knot and the stick goes front to back.
I'm left handed but always put my forks and sticks in with my right hand, diagonally with top of fork at 2pm and end of prongs at 8pm. Don't ask me why, I don't know.

Diagonally, and always from top right to bottom left, prongs down.
It's safer for my poor DBF and other friends, as I'm a hugger: horizontal is out. Vertical is a bad move on me because I jab myself on the back of the neck, and I worry the weight of hairfork might pull it out if it were vertical with prongs up.
I have no idea where I got the habit I've got of inserting it in the same direction from top to bottom from, though.
Beware, the Lipstickless Bandit rides again, roaming the period-correct countryside and absconding with the kisses of all those who take her fancy!
ALWAYS horizontally from right to left.
I mostly wear them diagonally, although I have been known to wear them vertically. I guess it depends on the type of bun?
