I used to consider that wearing a ponytail was putting my hair "up." Now that it's longer, and I've been wearing buns/ updos, a loose ponytail seems more like down to me. A ponytail doesn't feel protected- it feels more like loose hair. What do you think?

I think it's up. Once I put my hair in a pony and then take it out later in the day my curls won't look nearly as good down so it's definitely an up style for me.

I think it's still 'up'. It's gathered and pulled away from your neck, even if it's low. I know what you mean about it feeling like loose hair as opposed to bunned/twisted, though.

It's down. It doesn't noticeably protect my length.

I would say that a ponytale is "back," but not "up." It keeps the hair away from your face, but doesn't really change the exposed length or protect the ends.

when I do my hair in a ponytail (which is rare) I usually do it low and loose so its not really up but I picked up anyway since more people put their ponytails higher up on their head than I do. go figure

I voted neither 'up' nor 'down'. I almost never wear my hair in an actual updo, so a ponytail feels like 'up' to me. I also tend to wear them high. But it is only slightly more protective than having it down, so...
It keeps me from setting it on fire. That's what I'm mostly concerned with. ![]()

I think it's "up" considering most things that are "up" are pulled up in some way. Loose hair is just a product of that particular way of putting it up. That's akin to someone having a french braid, which may be considered "up," but with a long tassel. There are also some buns which are more knots than anything, which may or may not leave length hanging down instead of contained.
