Just to let everyone know - I don't have anything to report yet as I was unable to do the coconut oil pre-treatment last time I coloured (last week). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get hold of my colourist as he was away on a week long course (I meant to speak to him sooner but left it too late!). Anyway, I spoke with him about it last week, and he is totally up for trying! He said he would supply me with all the info on what he uses/amount and vol of developer etc so that I can report back accurately.

What I did do before my last appointment - was clarify with Giovanni 50/50 and then apply a very small amount of conditioner (to ends only) rinsed well and did not apply any stylers. I did this so my colourist could see the true condition of my hair! Well, it was huge and fluffy. Have attached a pic to illustrate. Have also attached a pic of my hair as it usually looks (ie with plenty of stylers in it! LOL!) for comparison purposes (well, actually it's more like I need you guys to see me with my hair looking reasonable - lol)

    .

My colourist said my hair was very porous (which I knew anyway) he did say it felt quite soft and damage not too bad! I think this has a lot to do with my cowash regime.

It is good to know the condition of the hair to start with. Your stylist sounds cool. His assessment does not sound bad at all and your hair looks pretty healthy over all. It is lovely and thick and your ends look good. I think that you have beautiful hair with and without stylers. I love the waves.

I am still waiting for the final results on a report but the most recent reports all indicate that the heavier the oiling pre-treatment, the better results.

Coconut and argan oils have not been reported to interfere with dye uptake or lightening, just the opposite.

The pre-treatments are best on clarified or hair without residue and other product, to let the oils saturate the hair well. That is the purpose of the pre-treatments, to saturate hair and chelate iron and copper to help prevent damage from conventional chemicals.

The fact that both of these oils have been reported to be conditioning and leave the hair in great condition is a secondary bonus.

The oils are not used to replace conditioner or conditioning products but in fact they can and have replaced pre-conditioning products that come with home hair colouring kits prior to colouring and bleaching without blocking dye uptake or lightening. They are being used as a preventative against free radical damage.

has anyone experienced where you do the coconut oiling first, let it soak, and then when you go to apply the peroxide or hair color, it beads up on the surface of the hair and runs off like water based substances usually do when added to oil? I'm trying to figure out how to be sure it's actually *soaking in*, that way if no lightening happens i know it's just that it didn't work and not that it wasn't absorbed (in my case I 'm trying to li ghten using 10 or 20 volume peroxide, which there isn't a lot of info on the hairboard)

ktani, I have not seen any damage since my last report, but after doing a heavy oiling today with Nightshade's hair oil, I was wondering whether anyone has used that as a protectant before coloring. Since it's made up of several oils, I wonder whether it would be as protective as the more commonly used coconut, or whether these oils do not retain any protective capabilities.

    Great news about no damage!

I researched a fairly large number of alternate oils. None of them have the chelating properties of coconut and argan oils, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...&postcount=814 . I am not familiar with the oil you mention. Do you have an ingredient list?
