Will try avocado. Great on my face too. I'll report back any results.
I tried the original recipe last night (slept with it); used a no cones conditioner. My hair turned out.. hmm, I'm not sure. It's kinda frizzy, at least on one side, and less curly than usual. It does feel nice and soft, although a bit stringy. Did I not rinse it out properly? Or was it the Aloe gel, my hair hated that for styling but I thought it might be ok if I rinsed it out...
Nevermind, a tiny drop of olive oil got rid of the frizz completely :D and the curls were actually great, just that the hair was a bit flatter so I didn't see properly at first.
The answer may be hidden in this thread, but I haven't found it yet. Is there a way of doing an SMT without aloe vera? I can I substitute it for something else?
I'm allergic to aloe vera, so it wouldn't be a wise move using it anywhere near my skin. I would try it on my lengths but there's still the issue it might come into contact with my hands.
I've SMT'ed before when I was out of aloe. I always found that using the conditioner, the honey, and maybe even some nice oils or something is very nice on its own, aloe or no aloe!
I guess aloe gel is part of what makes it the "official" SMT recipe-- but I do plenty of them with none in there at all. :o
It's nice either way! Speaking of which, it's been quite a while... :D
I've run out of aloe gel, so my SMTs are just honey and conditioner at the moment. It still works well, my hair is lovely and soft just like it would be with a 'normal' SMT. There's very little difference in the results, but I definitely prefer the results with aloe in the mix.
I just tried to do my first SMT. Without the honey, though - just aloe and conditioner.
I was really excited about it... but I got flakes and white gunk that wouldn't wash out until I used some shampoo. :( So sad. At least my hair feels a bit softer. It's still soaking wet so I'll have to wait and see if it looks any different.
Conditioner: Garnier Triple Nutrition
Aloe: ESI Aloe Vera gel
I just tried it for the first time today, using White Rain's version of the Garnier Triple Nutrition condish, and Target's house brand AVG. Sadly, the condish is not cone-free, but the dimethicone is low on the ingredient list so I figured it would be OK if not ideal... plus we had a full bottle of it in the spare bathroom.
It rinsed out fabulously, dried a bit straighter than usual and a teensy bit frizzy (I made a point of not combing at all during the drying, after detangling), but feels wonderful. The real test will be how it looks & feels tomorrow, but safe to say I'll be adding SMT to my routine. I suspect I'll like it even more with a cone-free condish.
I've got my second ever SMT in my hair. The first one was some time ago, and I didn't notice anything particularly different about my hair. This time I used a different conditioner - a mixture of VO5 and some organic cone-free stuff I got at Safeway - and honey and aloe vera gel. It felt very... moisturised putting it in, so I hope after sitting a few hours it will feel even more so.
I'm trying to decide if I want to try sleeping with it in. My hair doesn't like to dry while I'm awake, some I'm worried that would mess with whatever results I'd get. And either way, should I let it dry naturally or should I plop it? And I was thinking about putting some olive oil on it, because I've never oiled and I might as well after a moisture treatment, right? Decisions, decisions.
