I've been working at a store called, Hollister for the past 4 years and the majority of women customers that shop there wear their hair short. Today wasn't very busy and I was by the register when a woman approached me to do an exchange. I quickly acknowledged her and she was incredibly nice to me. Most customers when they have a return they just want to get in and get out. She wanted to know what I thought of the jeans she bought her son. When I was exchanging the jeans, I noticed her hair because she was looking at our video wall of the ocean. She had long brown wavy hair about classic length! I was so suprised! During the return I was nervous (I'm quite shy) because I really wanted to tell her how beautiful her hair was. I finally worked up enough courage to say that I thought her hair was beautiful. She replied with a Thank You, and a smile! She told me she never blow drys or straightens her hair and I told her that its a shame more woman don't grow their hair long anymore. She said her daughter had cut her hair short and was in the process of trying to grow it long like again like her Mom's. I asked her how long she had been growing it and if she was going to grow it longer? She said she had always had long hair and the shortest its been is about rip cage length. She said she will let it grow as long as it stays healthy. She was an incredibly nice lady, and I hope she comes in the store again in the future :)

I was going to write something for the articles section (even though I can't submit it for at least two months, haha) and it was mostly about hair FAQ. I was just giving brief answers to very common questions, like, "Is x-product good or bad?" and "Can I still blowdry/iron/etc?"

What other kinds of questions do we get asked really frequently that you think could be covered in this article? I'm thinking real basics of hair things here, like a hair primer for people who've never really had long hair before.

Ladies who advised me to do this:

Thank you again. It's been brilliant. I find bar kitchen soap like Octagon cleans and lathers best. The lemony, green or other dish liquids are okay but don't lather and get the job done as well.

I always assumed shampoos and soaps were all bad for my skin and hair. So I wouldn't get the cleaning done as well. Thanks for opening my eyes to the sulfate problem. And to conditioner washing for maintenance.

I have the cleanest scalp in years. The colour rocks, hair feels so nice and no more chemicals.

:cheese:

In my never-ending search to bring the weird and bizarre to you all, I've found a beauty for today.

At first I thought it was a stove hair comb, but it's a stove used to heat hair combs for straightening hair - and we thought the modern day methods were bad for our locks!

Check it out, you're not likely to see too many of these comin' down the pike (if we're lucky, anyway....)

I haven't been able to henna my hair for two months, and my roots (very dark brown) are showing. I am thinking of going back to my natural color, and would like to indigo my hair, for a number of reasons: I don't have enough time to henna my hair every month, and to obtain the shade of red I love, I have to light my roots first with 10vol peroxide, and I am afraid it is damaging.
So I want to indigo my hair, because if my hair is black or almost black, the roots will not show as much as they do now.
I have never used indigo, and haven't found almost anything in this forum: there are a lot of articles and threads on henna, and just a few words about indigo.
I have understood that indigo is mixed with warm water and a tsp of salt, and it must be immediately applied on hair.
My questions are:
- my hair is already henna-red, what color will I obtain if I use straight indigo? Will it be black or dark brown?
- I have read that indigo fades more easily than henna, is it true? Does it all fade, or does it leave a permanent stain?

My hair is usually pretty forgiving, especially when it comes to cones. I use Aussie Moist sometimes for tangles, I usually uses a drop of Suave shampoo in a palmfull of conditioner to wash it with occasionally. I know that baking soda opens the shaft right (vinegar closes it) straight banking soda seems to dry and tangle more than shampoo does but what if I diluted it in like a squirt bottle? I have this old dish liquid bottle that has been soaking and rinsing for a while to get rid of all the soap. If I put in a few teaspoons or tablespoons of baking soda and put quite a bit of water in there could I maybe rinse my hair with it to get the build up off? What do you think?

It doesn't get much wear, and I'd love to swap it for something in a very plain colour, such as:
Silvery Dark Blonde
Pearlized Jet Black
Pearlized Border Black (:ponder: if that exists...)
...or perhaps something else, silver backed and in a neutral sort of colour. I'm only looking to swap at the moment.

This forum is one of the reasons I love the net! I've gotten some wonderful advice from this site in the last couple of weeks. What a great resource.

I had my hair henna'd in India about a month ago, and I LOVE it. I've never had so many compliments on the color in my life

When I came back to the US, I tried to scare up some henna. The local stores had only some commercial stuff that didn't seem right, and the directions didn't make a whole lot of sense. I realized I didn't really know what I was doing, so before I did something to my hair that caused it to fall out or turn green, I decided to consult with google.

I have very dark brown hair (below shoulder; first goal is BSL) with some natural red highlights and way too much premature graying, so I'd been having a salon in the US cover the gray with semi-permanent dye.

After the henna in India, I'm done with that. Henna's so much prettier, and I like that it's good for my hair.

So I ordered some Yemeni henna and Tuesday was the big night.

I did a few somewhat unconventional things. I mixed the henna with very warm chamomile tea and just a few drops of vinegar. I didn't do a strand test because I've already my hair's already henna'd and my non-gray hair's so dark it doesn't matter much. I was really only risking a radical new color on the roots, and I figured if I hated it, I'd just redo it with a different mix. I put it on dry hair. I also left it on overnight, because it was just easier that way.

It was a mess to rinse out! I used a whole bottle of Aubrey conditioner. I found that even after 10 minutes of rinsing and half a bottle of conditioner, my hair still felt rough and grainy. But after most of the bottle, a shampoo, and very warm water rinsing, it felt like hair again.

It looks fantastic already! It's oxidizing nicely and it's fading away from the skin around my hairline. (I used Vaseline, but there was some hair there that I did want to dye.)

I'm thinking really only the gray will show much color, because my non-gray hair's so dark.

1st Question: how do I ensure my highlights turns auburn instead of burgundy? I'd like to keep hennaing my whole head.

2nd Question: Is there anything else I should do? I put a little coconut oil on after my hair dried.

Thanks!
