View Full Version : what are your favorite hair treats from the kitchen? hair jim July 28th, 2008, 05:20 PM just wondering if there were some more "kitchen beauticians" out there?. i know my hair likes egg based concoctions best- so far chrissy-b July 28th, 2008, 05:54 PM My hair loves olive and coconut oil. I used to use mayo for deep treatments but the smell became too much to bear. Patrycja July 28th, 2008, 05:56 PM Avacado treatments.Which involve oils and honey. Riot Crrl July 28th, 2008, 06:28 PM Vinegar n' oil. Not together. Elanor July 29th, 2008, 02:08 AM Coconut oil, honey and banana baby food :p jojo July 29th, 2008, 02:13 AM Honey, eggs, lemon juice and mayo! Boon July 29th, 2008, 02:20 AM Olive oil, egg yolks and honey. Isilme July 29th, 2008, 03:40 AM honey! And maybe light syrup. I had success in the past with combining eggs, honey and water and wash my hair with it. And a diluted white vinegar rinse when I'm done washing. burns_erin July 29th, 2008, 08:06 AM Rosemary, basil, sage, parsley, mint, coconut oil, EVOO, cauliflower, yogurt, honey. mommy2one05 July 29th, 2008, 08:27 AM Coconut oil, honey and banana baby food :p What do you do with banana baby food? What does it do for your hair? naturechild July 29th, 2008, 08:29 AM burns_erin Do you use then like a tea rinse? or how do you use them? but one question I must know!!! cauliflower,?? Sakura07 July 29th, 2008, 08:54 AM What do you do with banana baby food? What does it do for your hair? I use banana baby food any place that would need a smashed normal banana. For me I find that its easier to rinse out without having clumps of it still left in my hair. It also mixes with other things smoother. My favorites are Coconut oil, EVOO and Honey burns_erin July 29th, 2008, 08:58 AM burns_erin Do you use then like a tea rinse? or how do you use them? but one question I must know!!! cauliflower,?? The herbs make a tea with and either use it as a rinse or a mist. Cauliflower (cooked) mashed or blended with yogurt and honey makes a nice hair mask. My mother and sister love it, I like it okay. My mother and sister use an egg yolk instead of honey but I do not like egg yolk in my hair. It sort of thickens and smooths, particularly with the egg yolk. kwaniesiam July 29th, 2008, 10:05 PM Honey and various oils mostly. Eggs were a disaster. The occasional vinegar rinse is nice too. JadeRyan July 29th, 2008, 10:10 PM Typical SMT (honey, aloe, condish)...I used to mayo a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time again...I tried a variation of a caramel treatment (I think that's what it's called) last night of baby mashed bananna's, honey and condish...my hair felt good, but I skipped the ACV that I normally do and I felt like I had honey at my hair line all day...thank goodness it was a scrunchie Bun day at work. :D Elanor July 29th, 2008, 11:15 PM I use banana baby food any place that would need a smashed normal banana. My favorites are Coconut oil, EVOO and Honey That's the reason I use it too, I don't like the clumps either :D My favorite mix is 1 part aloe vera gel, 1 part honey, 1 part conditioner and 2 parts banana baby food. And sometimes I add some coconut oil there too. ChloeDharma July 30th, 2008, 03:07 AM Yogurt is probably my favourite ingredient, whenever i use it in a mix my hair feels amazing and has great shine. plainjanegirl July 30th, 2008, 11:26 AM I haven't used anything kitchen wise except for honey and coconut oil. I am afraid to experiment with other stuff. Afraid I would have a mess and something would go wrong. thankyousir74 July 30th, 2008, 11:36 AM My favorite kitchen treat is probably some honey. Even though I'm not in it for the lightening I just love the way it smells when I have honey water in the shower :) (plus I don't have to worry if a little get in my mouth like the ACV lol) My favorite bathroom treat though is Listerine. I read about it on a thread a couple of days ago and my scalp loved it! (and again the smell was a factor) JadeRyan July 30th, 2008, 08:12 PM I haven't used anything kitchen wise except for honey and coconut oil. I am afraid to experiment with other stuff. Afraid I would have a mess and something would go wrong. Never be afraid to experiment. My DH is a well meaning, smartass who loves to tease when I have a "concoction" in my hair...likes to tell me that my hair is going to be green one day when I take the shower cap off...;) I just tell him he's jealous that I have had kitchen success and his shoulder length hair needs some TLC....:D naturechild July 31st, 2008, 07:10 AM Jaderyan: My beau is a smart butt also he has even called out from the bathroom after a really good hair experiment (hey your eye of newt is loose in the bath tub) *sorry for the spelling of newt I dont know how to spell it.* burns_erin July 31st, 2008, 08:23 AM Jaderyan: My beau is a smart butt also he has even called out from the bathroom after a really good hair experiment (hey your eye of nuit is loose in the bath tub) *sorry for the spelling of nuit I dont know how to spell it.* I got the same comment from DH once, except the "newt" poor thing was a salamander and really was in the bathtub, fortunately we found him before the cat, 'cause she would have squashed him. Strongnlong August 1st, 2008, 06:03 AM I use many things from my kitchen in my hair. I've never been able to find a commercial deep conditioner that does what I can do at home. Honey Mayo Eggs Avacado Molasses ACV EVOO Coconut Oil Safflower Oil Banana Strawberry Thyme, Rosemary, Parsely, Cilantro, Mint Yogurt Heavy Cream Milk coco milk baking soda ...and probably some other things that i'm forgetting at the moment. wintersun99 August 1st, 2008, 11:12 AM Honey, EVOO, Coconut Oil, occasionally ACV. Tried an egg shampoo once and have no opinion one way or the other. Have used Mayo and Yogurt but not as a consistent treatment :) nellen August 1st, 2008, 02:38 PM Camellia oil, avocado oil, plum kernel oil, both shea and cocoa butter, aloe vera and sometimes honey. Celebrian August 1st, 2008, 04:57 PM Coconut Oil, EVOO, Honey, Lemon, Vinegar (any type) herbs (dry & fresh) Tea (all sorts) Cinnamon, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Cloves, Mayonaise, Sugar, Salt, Oats... I am considering using Cocoa powder in some kind of hair mask - but haven't yet refined it! I've been known to apply Tomato paste... Interested in Carrot at some point... Anyone done a Peanut Butter hair mask yet? burns_erin August 4th, 2008, 02:34 PM i did a peanut butter mask for getting gum out. It did get them gum out but made my hair feel really gross. I do not reccommend it. Celebrian August 4th, 2008, 04:50 PM i did a peanut butter mask for getting gum out. It did get them gum out but made my hair feel really gross. I do not reccommend it. I wonder if olive oil would have worked better? End of hijack! :eyebrows: heatherainsley August 4th, 2008, 05:59 PM I use mayo and beer in my hair and honey or aloe depending on what i am doing EmpressRi August 4th, 2008, 06:50 PM Well it WAS avocado until I made a treatment consisting of coconut milk and avocado blended. Now I had bought two avocados, one for hair and one for lunch...well when I began to eat one for lunch my throat began to close up and my mouth itched terribly. So I threw it away. Still thinking using it in my hair shouldn't be a problem, I went forward with it....and :agape: it burned sooooooooooooooo bad I wanted to cry!! I didn't realize I was THAT allergic to it! My hair felt soft but boy did my scalp burn! So for now I stick to coconut milk, yogurt and bananas. They do my hair lovely! LuXious August 7th, 2008, 10:06 AM I got the same comment from DH once, except the "newt" poor thing was a salamander and really was in the bathtub, fortunately we found him before the cat, 'cause she would have squashed him. Mine has said the bathroom looks like a meth lab. He often makes cracks like, "blah blah blah... whatever you're cooking up in the bathtub". Whatever. Eryka August 27th, 2008, 01:20 PM While oiling my hair last night in the bathroom DH came home from work. I walked out and started walking around the house while scritching my scalp (anyone else a walker when working your hair?), and apparently DH needed to use to toilet. A second after he went in he asked if I was done cooking in the bathroom. |
